THE BATMAN Tie-In Novel Confirms Existence Of Classic Superman Villain In Matt Reeves' DC Universe

An upcoming tie-in novel has confirmed that a major Superman villain exists in The Batman's version of the DC Universe, but could this lead to a new version of the Man of Steel showing up? Check it out...

The DC Extended Universe is finally living up to its name by firmly embracing the concept of a Multiverse to tell all manner of stories free of continuity and crossovers. While it's a shame the DCEU was unable to tell one overarching story as successfully as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Batman drives home just how much potential standalone franchises can have.

While Ben Affleck and Michael Keaton look set to share the role in The Flash, Robert Pattinson will play the Dark Knight in a world that isn't beholden to what we've seen in movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. However, that doesn't mean Bruce Wayne is his world's only hero.

In a new tie-in book, Before The Batman: An Orginal Movie Novel, a character called Dex references both LexCorp and Metropolis. "My dad and I need to get away," Dex says at one point. "Maybe Metropolis. I hear LexCorp Race Team is taking on new mechanics."

There's every chance this was just a throwaway Easter Egg included by the book's author and not something that will have meaningful ramifications for The Batman and beyond. However, this story is seemingly "canon," and the fact that both Metropolis and LexCorp (and presumably its villainous CEO, Lex Luthor) exist could mean we get a Superman story set in this world somewhere down the line.

Although after Zack Snyder's DC movies explored Batman's relationship with Lex, we're not anticipating those two crossing paths on screen again for the foreseeable future!

Check out our interview with Jesse Eisenberg below for the latest on his Lex Luthor future:

The Batman is set to be released in theaters on March 4.

It makes sense. Locales and certain institutions are just intrinsic to the world even if no other superheroes are involved.

That’s almost as exciting as Bruce Wayne telling Dick Grayson that “the circus must be halfway to Metropolis by now” in Batman Forever.

@AnthonyVonGeek - as a kid that line was exciting.

Toyman would be the perfect villain for Matt Reeves' Batman/Superman. The sinister toymaker and his Christmas campaign of horror.

@Repian - Totally agree. I rewatched Superman: TAS recently and was shocked by how much that version of Toy Man read as a Batman villain

@Repian - so can we agree the Ventriloquist and Scarface would be a good side villain for a future Batman sequel?

I never though that DC and Matt Reeves would go on to add Superman (or any other non-Batman character) to the mix of this universe, but if they are going for it, I know who I want behind the cameras: the creative team who made Ted Lasso for Apple.

Those guys know how to make a nice, wholesome, kind, yet interesting, protagonist.

I'm hoping the guy from "You" Penn Badgely gets the chance to play Superman in Flashpoint. Perfect match imo.

I really do think WB's backup plan is to build a new DC universe through Reeves world. Because if The Flash tanks, then they'll decide whether they should just botch that universe or not and move to the Reeve-verse

Speaking of Superman, i rewatched Superman: The Movie for the first time since I was an adult… that really changed my life. I always knew the movie was special as a kid, but wow. As an adult with more life experience and comprehension of themes, life, as well acting. It’s truly a beautiful movie. It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely one of the best movies I’ve seen.

@MonkeyDLuffy - that being said, we NEED another Superman movie that captures that LOVE. It’s not just the optimism and the time, but Clark/Superman’s altruism and love for others that needs to be at the forefront of his character. I hope that if this is the beginning of a new universe, that Superman’s light contrasts against the darkness of The Batman

@MonkeyDLuffy - It's still in my top 10 comic book movies of all time. Really top-notch film.

Unless it's mentioned in the movie this proves nothing

It is COMPLETELY and utterly comic movie believable that a dark toned Batman in the pit that is Gotham could coexist in a world that includes a thriving, successful city called Metropolis with an optimistic positive toned Superman. It doesn't mean Batman has to stop using a gun (if that's what the movie demands - and it certainly doesn't mean that Superman has to be a fall-off-the-truck innocent turnip.
Positive and negative.
It's worked for decades.
But it takes a talented writer to do so.
APPEARENTLY . . . Warner Bros. doesn't know where to find them.

But hey, it really is a moot point since DC Fans don't really WANT a cohesive universe. They are apparently happy with solo stories.
