HARLEY QUINN: BIRDS OF PREY Price Drastically Reduced On Rental Platforms Following VOD Release

It seems Warner Bros. may have been struggling to shift copies of Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey on rental platforms, as the price has been massively cut on VOD, signalling a bargain this Easter weekend!

Thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey was released on VOD a little over one month after its arrival in theaters. However, just two weeks after that early debut, Cathy Yan's girl gang movie has slashed its rental price ahead of Easter celebrations over the weekend.

After originally being priced at $19.99, you can now rent Birds of Prey for as little as $5.99.

For the most part, major Hollywood blockbusters hold off on reducing rental prices for at least a month, so this strategy for the latest DC Extended Universe film is actually unprecedented.

On the plus side, it's one that's paying off for Warner Bros. as the Margot Robbie-led feature is now at the top of the rental charts on iTunes. It was at #2 when it was initially released, but quickly fell down the charts the following week. With this move, the studio is ensuring it flies back on to people's radars.

Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey earned $202 million at the global box office on a reported budget of $80 - $100 million, but that's not enough for a sequel unless these VOD sales go through the roof.

If you haven't had chance to watch the film however, this weekend might be the perfect chance!

Idk why this is making news..movies are usually available for purchase for two weeks and then they become available for rental.

@regularmovieguy - it’s because it’s a dc movie and this site loves to twist anything dc into something negative.

This isnt news nor anything new. I rent video on Demand all the time. First 2 weeks you can only purchase the film for around $20(sometimes as low as $12, if it's one of those movies that made less than 20 million at box office). Then 2 weeks later you can rent for 4.99-5.99. Virtually every movie does this. Where was the article on Rise of Skywalker doing this, or last year End Game?

Doesn’t exactly put confidence into this whole idea that all movies are going digital from now on.

@TheUnworthyThor - But we will still have DVDs and Blu-rays being produced for home viewing at the same time they are doing more streaming.

@regularmovieguy - When we hear about this idea of skipping the theatrical release we hear about these 20 to 50 dollar price ranges for a rental but if they are dropping the rental price to 6 bucks after a few weeks it’s hard to imagine any big budget film to turn a profit.

They always drop from $20 purchase to $5.99 rental after 2 weeks on VOD.

The closest a studio has come to debuting a big, mega budget movie on VOD was with Onward. And even that went straight to Disney+ after two weeks

@regularmovieguy - Yeah... I’m saying they aren’t going to be releasing these huge movies straight to digital. But people everywhere keep insisting that theaters are dead and the future is all going to at home viewing yet all the evidence points to that not being the case.

Yeah, we're still far away from that. I think eventually, they will come up with a business model that will work for some bigger movies being released digitally.

But it won't be here for a long time.
