BLACK PANTHER: Dora Milaje General Okoye Is Unrecognisable In This Awesome New Concept Art

Okoye stole the show in Black Panther and this amazing new batch of concept art shows just how many alternate designs Marvel Studios considered before settling on arguably the perfect look for the hero.

Black Panther is now in theaters and it's breaking countless box office records. The movie feels like more than just Marvel's latest effort to expand its Cinematic Universe too because the cultural importance of the Ryan Coogler helmed release is massive and given the success it's found, it's clear that T'Challa is going to have a huge impact on the genre and could become the face of this world.

To celebrate the movie's release last month, we're taking a look at some amazing Black Panther concept art and this batch focuses on Okoye, played by The Walking Dead's Danai Gurira.

She was arguably the movie's female lead and got the lion's (panther's?) share of memorable action scenes as a result. With that in mind, it's easy to see why Marvel Studios spent so much time attempting to figure out the perfect look for Wakanda's General and these incredible pieces of artwork provide some surprisingly different takes on the character's costume, her weapons, and headgear.

So, to check out the entire list of concept art, all you need to do is click on the buttons down below.

An Eagle-Eyed Badass

Giving Okoye an eagle definitely would have been interesting, while those goggles are undeniably badass. Unfortunately, it all looks a bit too sci-fi for the tone Black Panther ultimately ended up with.

A Very Different Type Of Armour

Marvel clearly toyed with the idea of covering Okoye (and the rest of the Dora Milaje) in armour and that essentially morphing into a weapon definitely would have made for some unique imagery.

Okoye Comes To Life

Here, we see a version of Okoye very similar to what ended up on the big screen and it's fair to say that Marvel Studios found the perfect look for the character and leader of the Dora Milaje.

Okoye Gets A Mask Of Her Own

Giving Okoye and the Dora Milaje masks could have worked but it would have been a shame to cover their faces when each woman is so distinctive and would have stopped them from showing emotion.

Alternate Weapons

These spears are all very different but equally cool. There's one with an electric charge and another which comes straight from Okoye's gauntlet and expands in her hand so she's ready for a fight.

A Very Unique Type Of Mask

An argument could be made that the Dora Milaje should have something to protect their faces and as helmets go, this one definitely could have worked and pays tribute to various African imagery.

Okoye's New Hairstyle

While Okoye wears a wig at one point in Black Panther, she's bald for the rest of the movie and rocks some awesome tattoos on her head. However, she very nearly had some stylish haircuts instead!

Alternate Tattoo Designs

As I mentioned above, Okoye has some very cool tattoos in the movie and these various designs show us just how different they could have ended up looking in Marvel Studios' latest release.

Okoye And Nakia Side By Side

You need to look closely to spot the differences here but these show that Marvel considered a lot of different patterns for these characters before settling on the awesome design we saw on screen.

Anyone else think the eagle one would have been used if they decided that T’Challa would give Falcon his hardlight wings in Infinity War like he does in the comics. That way he has an actual biological redwing without having to explain the cosmic cube bird telepathy stuff.

The brilliance of this film is that a number of supporting characters steal the spotlight anytime they're on screen.

The Dora Milaje, and Okoye specifically, were so electrifying.

@BlackBeltJones - I noticed that with my first and second viewing. Liked T'Challa in both, but my favourites were Shuri, Okoye and Nakia. Next thing I know I see it a second time and I'm all about M'Baku, Klaue and Ramonda

@BlindWedjat - character. That's why this film is in a different league.

It is character driven in a way that puts in in different league.

This is far more character-driven than anything Marvel has done. Here, everyone is steeped in the mythos of their ancestry but committed to a more diplomatic future.

After I saw it a third time, and it only gets better as you notice things you missed early on, I picked up on how this film is so good because of the little things.

The arguments Black Panther undertakes with itself are central to its architecture. A narrative spine that runs from the first scene to the very last. Little to no other cbms have done this imo.

When they do play with bigger moral ideas, it's often peripheral.

The mask made up of rings was kind of an interesting idea. It does seem like they could use some face protection, but I love the outfits that they wear in the film.

"Okoye stole the show"? That's not how you spell "Nakia".
