BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER Concept Art Reveals Strikingly Different Shuri/Black Panther Designs

This latest concept art for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever has revealed a whole host of alternate designs for Shuri's Black Panther costume, some of which are a major departure from what we saw on screen.

By JoshWilding - Dec 07, 2022 09:12 AM EST

Prior to the first trailer for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever being released, there was a lot of speculation surrounding who would inherit the mantle from Chadwick Boseman's T'Challa.

Shuri seemed the obvious choice, but with various controversies surrounding Letitia Wright, names like M'Baku, Okoye, and even Kevin "Kasper" Kole started doing the rounds online. It soon became obvious that Shuri would become the MCU's new Black Panther, and we'd say Marvel Studios made the right decision based on what we saw in the sequel.

The costume used in the movie was great, but new concept art revealed by Wes Burt has shown how different Shuri could have looked in the MCU.

In the Instagram post below, there's a mixture of similar, vastly different, and even weird takes on the character's Black Panther costume. However, if they all have one thing in common, it's that they'd have looked pretty damn cool on screen.

Paying homage to the comics and the Wakandan culture created by Marvel Studios (which is, of course, inspired by real-life African nations), Burt found some interesting ways to put a fresh spin on the hero. We don't know when or where Shuri will return, but expect her to get another costume when she does; with that in mind, it's possible these ideas will be revisited.

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever ranks among Marvel Studios' best movies, and is an emotional, uplifting, tour de force of a blockbuster," we said in our review of the sequel last month. "Letitia Wright delivers a powerhouse performance, while Angela Bassett’s majestic work will leave you reeling."

The movie, which doesn't look set to make quite as much at the box office as its predecessor, has already generated Oscar buzz and serves as a fitting tribute to Boseman and T'Challa.

Check out these alternate Black Panther costume designs below.

Long hair one looks cool.

@Urubrodi - I agree. Probably my favorite of those designs.

@Urubrodi - Yeah, it does but I understand her using it tight due to practicality.

@Fogs - I get it, but I personally (within certain limits of course) put looks above things like praticality. Based on that concept art, the long hair suits her more.

The one with the see through red cape thing is super cool. Not for the character, but just the design. Looks Kryptonian. Bad ass. I like it.

@TheVandalore - Reminded me of T'Chaka's appearance as the Black Panther in the flashback scenes. I like the extra ceremonial adornment.

I really like these. Love the Afro-punk motifs. Very cool and edgy, suitable for the kind of darker emotions the character was dealing with in the film. Very nice.

Hair looks great in these. Entree than the f:ck boi, E boi, tik tok haircut she had in the movie.

@Origame - I was about to write that but those pics she has the helmet on also have the arms covered.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 12/7/2022, 10:09 AM
@Origame - In those pics, her face is also exposed, so I imagine it's just a "helmet off" state, and the arms would be covered as well as the face in "fight mode".

In all the art with the helmet on, her arms are covered by the vibranium.
Origame
Origame - 12/7/2022, 10:15 AM
@SheepishOne - ...but she didn't have a different design when helmet was off in the movie. And that's a ridiculous design decision as well.
Origame
Origame - 12/7/2022, 10:18 AM
@SheepishOne - besides, all the ones with helmets had a corresponding version without the helmet. So that is debunked.

My guess is they were trying out designs without a helmet entirely. But ultimately decided against it.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 12/7/2022, 10:23 AM
@Origame - No, not debunked. Why wouldn't you assume they had "helmet on" versions for those last few? Just because they didn't include them here? The artist probably made a handful of designs without the helmet, and then based on what was well received, made "helmet on" versions for anything that passed the first round. Based on interviews with Andy Park, that's usually how these design batches go.

I doubt there was at any point an idea for Shuri to never have a helmet.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 12/7/2022, 10:25 AM
@Origame - To be fair, I haven't seen the movie yet.
Origame
Origame - 12/7/2022, 10:42 AM
@SheepishOne - why would they approve the helmet versions but not the helmet less one along with it?

Besides, one of them even includes big a$$ tooth ear rings. Those aren't fitting under a helmet.
SheepishOne
SheepishOne - 12/7/2022, 12:18 PM
@Origame - From what Andy Park says, it's mostly to save time. For WandaVision, I know he had to get the outfit approved first, before the headpiece. So he made however many versions of the "final" outfit, and then did work on various versions of the headpiece to go with the two or three approved versions of the outfit. Because ultimately they want concept art both with masks/helmets/etc and without to show the actor's face.

So it could be that those later versions of Shuri art were never approved, so the artist didn't bother doing versions with the helmet.

Admittedly, I'm making assumptions here, but they're based on practices used in previous MCU productions. Could be that your comment about the ear rings is exactly why they didn't move forward with that one.

Pretty much all of these designs are TOP NOTCH and I think they're saving them for the sequel.

I wish they kept the neck rings in the final design.
I think her on-screen suit is way too overdesigned. Up there with Thor's Love and Thunder armor.

Looks like an influencer's idea of a costume - photogenic AF and totally impractical.

That very last one, the one in the article thumbnail here, easily the best look. Plus I like that it was a semi-goth kind of edge, which I think would've worked for Shuri's arc in this. Not performance wise, but visually.

outside of the ones with the earings, these are way better

the one they went with was weirdly both over designed and under designed

the bits of gold and silver was unnecessary

the suit needed more texture

last one is the best

Like the one in the banner image the most. Has a nice balance between ornaments and black, and doesn't make her neck look unusually long.
