Black Panther: Wakanda Forever opens with T'Challa's funeral and ends with the revelation that he had a son, in secret, with Nakia. Toussant, whose Wakandan name is "T'Challa," met his aunt Shuri in the movie's mid-credits scene in what proved to be a highly emotional not to end this story on.

The expectation now is that young T'Challa will eventually inherit his father's mantle, whether it's 10 or 15 years from now or in a time jump created by Kang the Conqueror's machinations in the next two Avengers movies.

Talking to Star Wars' John Boyega for a special series of interviews with Variety, Shuri actress Letitia Wright opened up on the impact that scene had on her.

"That post-credit scene, for me, is another extension of the ways in which we wanted to honor Chadwick [Boseman] - especially the role of T’Challa," she explains. "In the movie that Chadwick was written into before he passed, there is a journey of a father and son."

"When reading it, I could sense we had to find a way to continue the legacy of what T’Challa means to the world, especially to young Black men. That scene messed me up."

Asked how many young actors auditioned for the role, Wright revealed: "Two. Then Divine [Love Konadu-Sun] came in. His name is Divine. He had a little Chadwick Mohawk. Me and Lupita Nyong’o kept looking at each other like, ‘This is the kid.’ That scene is beautiful because it represents what the future will be."

It's interesting that original plans for the Black Panther sequel called for T'Challa to explore his relationship with his son, likely because we'd have learned he missed the first five years of the boy's life after being snapped out of existence by Thanos. That would have made for an interesting movie, and one we're sure Boseman could have done amazing things with.

Sadly, it wasn't meant to be after he passed away following a lengthy battle with cancer. The sequel we did get, however, definitely did the late actor justice.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now playing in theaters.

@bobevanz - Not sure how this has any relevance to the Black Panther story but you can actually thank Weta Digital. They developed the tech and when Cameron saw what they could do with it he knew the tech was up to speed for him to be able to do the Avatar movies.

@bobevanz - I'm pretty sure James Cameron isn't a VFX artist, actually. I'll thank the artists instead lol

@SauronthePower - He is not a VFX artist...working on Avatar 2. I didn't think I needed to spell that part out but okay

You're telling me Ramonda knew Nakia had her grandson, and still sent Nakia on a mission by herself to an underwater kingdom they had never seen, lmao

@ForceofWakanda - this was issue I had, as much and I liked the movie. The first film does some of this but I wish this one validated more why the Queen chooses Nakia out of everyone. We know she’s skilled and she’s a spy who has occupied differing nations and cultures but that’s the mother of your ONLY grandchild that you’re sending into enemy territory.

From a character standpoint, it makes sense. She’s the only War Dog of note around (I thought this would’ve been a perfect opportunity for that Hatut Zeraze to show up, but that could’ve been a bit much for an already long film). And Namor was removed from so it implies Nakia is so good as long as someone of Namor’s strength isn’t present, she can get the job done.

@GhostDog -

Yea and it just lends into the bigger thing about how it feels like there are only about 3 or 4 people in Wakanda that seem to be competent at anything. Like c'mon man, Nakia has been away from the country for years and years...and you have absolutely no one else for a special op? Especially given the circumstances, of what Wakanda had been wrapped up in recently? Their talent pool is so bad she has to go recruit the mother of her grandson and put the kid at risk of losing both his parents???

@ForceofWakanda - I agree. And maybe that’s what the upcoming tv shows focused on the wider nation is going to do; open up how vast everything is and how many interesting and capable citizens they have.

1. I think I would’ve gone for the swing and introduced the Hatut Zeraze. I would’ve had another country try to raid a Wakandan Vibranium deposit facility. Maybe even the U.S. who knows. You have the Dora stopping one raid and the Hatut unit the other. Pepper in some dialogue about another special unit needed to be created to combat the attempted thefts of vibranium. There’s your intro.

2. I know they want Nakia in on the action but I would’ve had her still gather intel and lead the recon for entering Talokan but let the Hatut actually infiltrate.

@ForceofWakanda -Let's not act like Nakia is some push over. She needed the best and she knew that was easy work for Nakia.

@newhire13 -

Im not saying Nakia doesn't have skills. It's just kinda crazy she asked Nakia of all people to do it given the circumstances

She was robbed of her Golden Globe, but I'll bet the Oscars nominate her and Angela. They will probably also recognise that it was one of the better pictures this year and that Ryan Coogler also deserves a nomination.

Since the Oscars come long after Avatar 2's release, if the public and critical response to the film is underwhelming, I wouldn't be surprised if it is ignored in all categories save for Visual Effects.

Let's see. Time will tell.

Avengers: Secret Wars (May 1, 2026).

Meaning BP3 should be around 2028/2029ish, maybe. They can age the character up slightly and start a T'Challa story line that eventually parallels he and Storm finally happening. Should it be they go with a younger XMen route.

This gets old...

BP3 will be the most political yet.

Watch out Walter Jones.

@Lokiwasright - movies set in the only non-colonized country in Africa, which also has access to one of the rarest resources is always gonna be political.

While I could tell that there was a lot of emotion behind it, I'm still not sure how I feel about the scene overall, given the whole recasting vs. not recasting debate. It just sort of felt like Marvel was trying to play both sides. Not really committing to something. "Want Black Panther to be T'Challa? Good news!"... "Don't want Black Panther to be T'Challa? Good news!"

I thought this was a clever way to give the MCU a future T'Challa.

I know there were a lot of people saying you can't have a Black Panther without T'Challa (which isn't technically true) but allowing Shuri to take up the mantle felt like the right emotional journey for the character. She was struggling to let go of her brother so becoming the Black Panther felt like a step in both accepting his death but also honoring his life.

I'm sure in a few phase's time there'll be a passing of the mantle from Shuri to T'Challa with him becoming King of Wakanda and the MCU's new Black Panther.

The ending of the movie was just so sad and eerie. No music, just shuri mourning. Letitia went so crazy in this moment that when the post credit scene came on I was grinning from ear to ear.

I really love what they did bringing T'Challa Jr in when no one expected it. Just a beautiful scene

My pitch for Black Panther 3 would be Shuri training and getting to know young T'Challa and Latveria becoming a new national superpower after being recently conquered over by Victor Von Doomstadt aka Doctor Doom. Latveria would pose as a new threat to both Wakanda and Talokan, causing them to team up against Doom but he manages to cohort Namor into turning against Shuri, setting up for the Cabal and it's other members like the Hood, Loki, and Emma Frost.

The whole end credit scene felt tacked on and forced…

I really hate this forced end credit, all Avengers are now fathers thing they did in phase 4… all felt very shoehorned in.
