Kevin Feige Opens Up On Chadwick Boseman's Death And Plans For BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER

The entire world was left reeling by the news that Chadwick Boseman had passed away after a lengthy, secret battle with cancer, and while the Black Panther sequel wasn't a priority for anyone to begin with, thoughts soon turned to how the actor could be honoured with the planned movie.

Filmmaker Ryan Coogler set to work on rewriting the screenplay, and while we don't know who will suit up in T'Challa's absence, everyone involved has praised how Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is taking shape.

Talking to Rotten Tomatoes, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige opened up about learning that Boseman had suddenly passed away. "The death of Chad [Boseman] had hit all of us extremely hard — and at the same time as it hit the world, because we didn’t know either," he admitted. "And there were all sorts of questions, and our first thought for many weeks afterwards had nothing to do with the movie, it had to do with him and his family and his wife and his legacy."

Feige went on to explain that Marvel Studios "were looking to Ryan Coogler for guidance" and noted that "discussions essentially came down to continuing the legacy of Wakanda and continuing with that storyline in a very meaningful, respectful, and yet still hopeful and fun and exciting way, which was difficult after losing Chad."

Now, with cameras expected to begin rolling soon, Feige praised Black Panther: Wakanda Forever's creative team and promised fans that they've come up with something he believes they will love.

"I will say that Ryan and our producer, Nate Moore, and the entire cast, and our co-writer Joe Robert Cole, have done some remarkable things in the story and the draft," he teased. "The team is assembling once again and cameras roll in the not-too-distant future on that. And it will be extremely emotional across the board, but I think they have something very special in mind."

It is going to be tough to watch a Black Panther movie without Boseman, and there's still no word on how he will be written out of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, we can be sure that Marvel Studios will have found a way to tell a compelling story and, based on these comments, one that also honours the legacy of a hero both on and off the big screen.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is set to be released on July 8, 2022.

It's not really the movie itself I'm that interested in, just in how they're gonna do it all without Boseman. Really hope they can pull it off is a meaningful way

@bkmeijer - he died in BP 1. His dad died in Cap 3. And he died again in Infinity War and returned in Endgame.... how do they think killing him off again is a better option than recasting? He's Kenny from South Park at this point.

@Makiveli21 - I doubt they'll recast. Instead I see a new character take his place instead. As for doing it without him, I think having it set between IW and EG probably works best.

@bkmeijer - I really interested in everything about movie much so than the other phase 4 films. Because I have absolutely no idea what this movie will be about! I’m ready to see more of the world of Wakanda.

@LiteralSense90 - ''Because I have absolutely no idea what this movie will be about''

Thats for me also one of the main reasons (same as with Shang-Chi and Eternals, but that's kinda different for me)

I know it was a very private matter for his personal life but hey, it's weird that Chadwick's agent didn't warn MS about his health issues. They signed a multi-million dollar contract, they probably wanted Chad to lead the new Avengers.

The sad thing is, you try to ignore your spider sense but when I watched Black Panther, I remember saying to myself "wow how much Chadwick aged from Civil War". That was the reason, he was fighting and he never stopped working.

Chadwick Boseman, the warrior.

@MadThanos - I’m not sure (I could be wrong) but I always thought Chadwick kept his illness very private, even towards his agent.

I mean, he had every right to believe he could beat it and star on the movies he signed on to do, and from what I can gather, his health basically deteriorated in a matter of weeks?

@MadThanos - There's got to be someone who heard something, even the tiniest thing about Chad, whether they publicly said otherwise or not. Like come on.

I'm really wondering how they are going to make this without Boseman.I truly hope the film honors him in a grand way.

It's really a shame that we won't see T'Challa again for seemingly a long long time, especially since we only got one movie with him.
I know that calling for a recast is frowned upon, but I can't get myself excited for any of the other characters, not as much as T'Challa at least.
Battabing
Battabing - 7/13/2021, 9:50 AM
@Fares - People need to come to terms with it. Boseman would want T'Challa's story to continue and the character should be bigger than the actor.
If Superman, Batman, Bond, Hulk, Wonder Woman, and Spider-man can be allowed to build a legacy of actors who portray them, T'Challa should be afforded the same right.

The should have just pushed it back, gave it some time and then done a recast, test the waters and decide whether to retire the character more naturally or carry on. Doctor Strange has gone 6 years without a sequel, we could have waited. I remember the Black Panther press tour, I couldn’t see Chadwick being ok with this character dying with him when he knows how much it means to so many people. But they’ve made their bed now and I hope Ryan Coogler can make this into a decent movie.

@IKidYouNotMan - I know if I had the once and a lifetime opportunity to bring such a cultural character to life, in the way Boseman did, and what he had planned for the characters legacy, I’d want them to recast not out of disrespect, but out of respect of the legacy I (he) had planned.

@IKidYouNotMan - I wonder if Robert Downey Jr. had died after Iron Man 2 or Tom Holland died after Far From Home, would you had been calling for them to be recast?
IKidYouNotMan
IKidYouNotMan - 7/13/2021, 7:24 AM
@LiteralSense90 - yes because there are other people that could play Tony Stark, I knew what his template was before the MCU because I read the comics and Tom Holland hasn’t been the only Spider-Man. The characters are bigger than the actors and you’re gonna retire this character after his first live action portrayal for god knows how many years until they decide to soft reboot the universe one day.
MG0019
MG0019 - 7/13/2021, 7:49 AM
@LiteralSense90 - at this point we’ve had 3 SpiderMen; and we’re able to appreciate and value all 3. Had Tom or Robert died we’d mourn their loss, but recasting isn’t a sleight on them or the character. The actor died; not the character.
LiteralSense
LiteralSense - 7/13/2021, 8:09 AM
@MG0019 - I didn’t say it was a slight on their character. I just think people in fandom would have felt differently if that were the case.

Yeah, respecting his legacy while destroying the character he risked his last few years alive to bring us. Sure. REEEEEAL respectful.

@Origame - and how they destroyed his character?
DTor91
DTor91 - 7/13/2021, 6:43 AM
@Origame - No, SpideyQuad is right.
You’re making an assumption with no basis, and they’re stuck in a damned if you do damned if you don’t situation.

Tough calls had to be made, and they went with the one they felt is right. It’ll remain to be seen if it truly was the right one until the film is out.

But what you’re saying is asinine and baseless. No one is going out of their way to “destroy” anything. And you don’t know a damn thing on what they’re doing outside of the little crumbs we’ve gotten on where the sequel is headed.
Origame
Origame - 7/13/2021, 7:02 AM
@RegularPoochie - ...by not recasting.
Origame
Origame - 7/13/2021, 7:07 AM
@DTor91 - tough call, yes, but if this were about his legacy they'd recast the role. Chadwick kept working on the role, even when sick, because he knew the importance of it.

Also, I know enough. If they aren't recasting, then tchalla at the bare minimum isn't gonna have a large role moving forward, and will be pretty awkward since they'll only be able to use unused footage. But most likely they'll kill him off.
RegularPoochie
RegularPoochie - 7/13/2021, 7:08 AM
@Origame - ... By not recasting they are showing respect for Boseman
Origame
Origame - 7/13/2021, 7:12 AM
@RegularPoochie - yes, by ending the character it's really showing respect to the guy who risked his diminishing health to have the character in movies.
Origame
Origame - 7/13/2021, 7:13 AM
@DTor91 - also, none of that makes spideyquad right. He said my comment was unnecessary. Criticism is always necessary.
