Is Ava DuVernay A Lock To Direct Marvel's BLACK PANTHER?

That's the latest - but we'll have to wait for confirmation. The Selma director's been linked to the project for a few months now, but it was also reported that it might be Captain Marvel she was in line to direct. Apparently not! Click on for more, but remember it's still a rumor for now...

A while back it was reported that Selma director Ava DuVernay had taken meetings with Marvel, and might possibly be in line to helm either Captain Marvel or Black Panther, with the latter being the most likely. Now, The MCU Exchange reckon they've confirmed that DuVernay will indeed take the reigns of the first solo (he will make his debut in Captain America: Civil War) big screen outing for T'Challa, who'll be played by Chadwick Boseman.

So, is this on the level? Well, the site has definitely had some good info in the past and this story has been picked up by a few other outlets - but until it's confirmed my the studio or at least reported by a trade, we'll have to take it the usual grain of salt. If it transpires that DuVernay has signed on to helm Black Panther, do you think she's a good choice?

She's a great director. i'm really interested in her ability to shoot action shots. But BP will still be a good movie.

Y'all already know who'd I'd get...

I just know that John likes to do things "his" way and that would probably cause a problem for Marvel similar to how Edgar Wright had to be let go.

I just hope that whoever gets it, has a complete compassion for the character and truly wants to make him an instant favorite for fans everywhere.

She's a fantastic director and just because she directed Selma doesn't mean this is going to be a "political/social awareness" movie. For [frick]'s sake people, you know directors can make more than one type of movie right?

The bridge sequence in SELMA is one of the most terrifying set pieces ever. Well [frick]ing shot by Bradford young.

This is a bold choice very exciting. So we could end up with two female directors in phase 3.

@DrDoom I caught a glimpse bummer.

Not sure why people are upset over this news. Marvel usually gets underdogs or unappreciated cult artists, but this chick already has an "oscar worthy" film under her belt(not necessarily my opinion on the film, just a general consensus, so correct me if I'm wrong), so they must really like her considering they got someone who is really out there at the moment rather than someone who has a bad track record but can do wonders for a certain project. My point being they didn't get her simply because she was black and made one good movie, they obviously talked to her and probably liked what she had to say. As long as the Russo's build a strong foundation for Black Panther in Civil War, we shouldn't have to worry about her, I guess, removing certain comic book eccentric qualities that are consistent with the Marvel brand(examples being talking raccoons, shrinking thief jokesters, alien Gods, etc).

Haven't seen anything from her, but she doesn't sound like a bad choice. Any reason to be confident that she can do action?

@0megaDaGr0dd

I think that Cage was supposed to have been given a film at first? I thought that they had movie scripts already finished for him a while back? Nonetheless, I would've actually loved to see Quentin Tarantino direct a "Heroes for Hire" film starring Iron Fist and Cage. Sadly I doubt John would even be able to do the Luke Cage show, he's got some new series called "Snow Fall" coming soon. So I'm sure he'll have his hands filled with that. I guess we'll see what's going on with all of this in due time. Fingers crossed for the best! lol

If there's a good script involved, then she could pull it off.

She handles character drama so well. Give her the stunt guys and choreography guys from TWS and Daredevil and this movie will be amazing. I've also heard that the Russos will produce so that's good. Antoine Fuqua and Ryan Coogler were my other choices

@Jeight

There's a lot of truth within your comment man, didn't really think about it like that. Marvel just has their own formula that works for them and I don't think John would be willing to cope with that formula. I guess I was just thinking about his most recent departure from the upcoming "Tupac" film he was supposed to direct, but now they've moved along with a different director who is willing to comply to how the studio plans to handle the film. I hate to sound like a chatty patty, but I was just really pumped for him to take on the film. Guess they all didn't see eye to eye sadly.

@Jeight "She certainly is talented. The thing is, is she willing to dwleve into the more comic book aspects of the lore? Dora Milaje, Klaw with the sonic arm, Bast, mystic aspects of the mantle? If she is, then it's a good match."

I think she is more than willing, as I imagine she would want to respect the culture that is set in Wakanda, even if it is fictional. I think the question we should all be asking is if she will try to give it a sci-fi, supernatural or superhero vibe, because she could attempt to portray the culture in a realistic fashion, which is what I'm worried about, if she is going to do a comic book movie, she should embrace the foundation of the material. But look at Kenneth Branagh, he did mostly shakespeare stuff and he really only changed Thor to be more of a cosmic hero, which is fine considering he is surrounded by cosmic threats, so I don't think we should worry too much, I guess. The screenwriter is where it really counts in source material here, so hopefully they grab up Reginal Hudlin who did that Black Panther cartoon mini series, it was comic-booky and it was very much a social-political drama which works well with Ava and won't let her out of her comfort zone in terms of material.
