Black Widow has been postponed indefinitely thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, but the Marvel Studios movie was recently the subject of an Empire Magazine cover story. Now, thanks to the @MarvelNewsCast Twitter account, we know that the issue reveals the identity of Ray Winstone's character.
He's reportedly playing Dreykov, the head of the Red Room (presumably before Taskmaster took charge based on what we've been hearing about Black Widow lately).
Here's where things get really interesting, though; as The Direct notes, when Loki is taunting Natasha Romanoff aboard the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier in The Avengers, he asks "Can you wipe out that much red? Dreykov's daughter?" There have previously been claims that Winstone is playing the hero's father in this movie, but that appears to be something which has been taken a little too literally.
Instead, common sense says that Dreykov was probably the man in charge of the Red Room when Natasha was being trained there, and he's likely a character we'll see in flashbacks to her youth.
How that all ties into Taskmaster taking charge of a new era of Black Widows is hard to say, but it's definitely cool to see how much thought Marvel Studios has clearly given Natasha's origin story, and that they've found a way to tie it into The Avengers (which, believe it or not, came out eight years ago).
