With so many March and April release dates being moved, it may only be a matter of time before the Cate Shortland-directed prequel follows suit. There are multiple rumors doing the rounds that an official announcement is forthcoming, but the latest trade reports indicate that Disney does intent to forge ahead as planned.

Black Widow Vs. Taskmaster

8.25 x 11.75 Mounted Print - Marvel Cinematic Universe Black Widow - Fight

Some awesome, animation-style artwork of Widow taking on Taskmaster.

We still don't know who'll be playing the villain, but cast member O. T. Fagbenle recently sent speculation into overdrive with a Tweet. That could all be misdirection, of course, as his character has been rumored to be the one under the mask for a while now.

Black Widow #1

Marvel Cinematic Universe - Black Widow - Bars

Another look at Scarlett Johansson as The Fallen Avenger, Natasha Romanoff.

Although this movie has been confirmed to be a prequel (Widow met her maker in Avengers: Endgame, after all), there's a lot of speculation that at least part of the story will play out post-Endgame. Romanoff is not expected to be resurrected, but many believe that Florence Pugh's character Yelena Belova may end up taking over the Black Widow mantle.

Black Widow #2

Marvel Cinematic Universe - Black Widow - Run

Although fans have been asking for a standalone Black Widow adventure for many years, Johansson recently revealed that she actually wasn't all that interested - until she met director Cate Shortland, who was intrigued by the character's resilience.

“We just bonded over stories about trust and about intimacy and about women surviving,” Shortland says of her initial chat with the actress. “You didn’t have to be a superhero to identify with a woman who has had a really tough childhood and has survived and has a huge heart and helps other people.”

Yelena Belova

Marvel Cinematic Universe - Black Widow - Yelena

Florence Pugh will play Yelena Belova in Marvel's first (and most likely only) solo Black Widow movie. She has previously gained acclaim for her performances in the likes of WWE wrestling biopic Fighting With My Family and Ari Aster's Midsommar.

Widow, Yelena, Red Guardian and Taskmaster

Finally, we have an awesome new shot of Natasha, Yelena and Red Guardian with Taskmaster looming in the background.

"In Marvel Studios’ action-packed spy thriller “Black Widow,” Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger. Scarlett Johansson reprises her role as Natasha/Black Widow, Florence Pugh stars as Yelena, David Harbour portrays Alexei/The Red Guardian, and Rachel Weisz is Melina. Directed by Cate Shortland and produced by Kevin Feige, “Black Widow”—the first film in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe—hits U.S. theaters on May 1, 2020." --Marvel Studios."

Black Widow also stars William Hurt, Ray Winstone and Olivier Richters. The movie hits theaters on May 1st. Let us know if you're looking forward to the movie in the comments.

All this P&A spending is just gonna build up until April 24, when they delay it after having spent their entire advertising budget

@DoubleD - Lets be honest here, the Coronavirus is just an excuse that Hollywood's using to move all their big movies from Bloodshot. Could be looking at the new box office champ!

@PantherKing - Fear and panicking will do more damage then the virus. Stocks will go up 1 to 12 months back to where they were.

“Animated” means “moving”. The style of this poster can best be described as “pop art”. “Cartoonish” would also work. Animated, it is not.

@HarryBloodscreaming - Definitely a misnomer. We all understand what it means, but technically you are correct. I just think it sounds better than "illustrated" or something like that.
Spock0Clock

@HarryBloodscreaming - If someone says "anime", they may just mean it's in an anime style (even if Japanese or manga may be technically more accurate).

In the same way, I think you can read "animated" as a stylistic distinction as much as a particular medium. And yes, you can get momentary confusion as a result, but it's not a huge disruption to anyone's day, I don't think. Nobody is going to have a bad day because they thought they'd see a piece of moving art instead of a static one.

This is a static image, but it's clearly evoking the animated style of Renaissance-Era Disney cartoons. Calling it "animated" is still appropriate, I think.

(Though, in the case of the OP poster, I don't think this piece qualifies as being in an animated style, either. It's very much the posterized vector pop art that people do, like Shepard Fairey's Obama poster.)

@Spock0Clock - Yeah, I get how these words work in contemporary popular culture, but I don’t have to like it. Thanks for taking the time, though.

There are probably some contractual barriers, but I really do think a pay-per-view home release could be a more profitable decision than delays (especially if there are a glut of delayed projects coming out all at once over the next year).

Disney+ is already a delivery service. You've already put your credit card information into it. Just having a banner that pops up offering to stream Black Widow for 15 dollars would probably do pretty damn good business.

I'm not a bean-counter and maybe there are better choices than Black Widow to experiment with, but I'm just saying the model is viable.

Also, I really regret monkey-paw-wishing that there wouldn't be a writer's strike. Sorry, guys, this pandemic is on me and my damn karmic-ass-kicking magical wish device.

@Spock0Clock - They would actually lose a lot of money if they do it that way because one household would buy the $15 movie and invite 10 (hopefully non infected) people over to watch like they do with big fights.

A delay won't hurt it as badly we think especially since practically every big movie is getting delayed, so people will be itching to get out and have fun once the WHO gives the all clear.

Absolutely unfair that Marvel managed to have Widow play the background for exactly 10 years and still had enough juice in the tank to make a movie about her I'm excited for. A Marvel Studios movie is an automatic hype builder, but I'm genuinely looking forward to the Black Widow stuff they are doing (and clearly holding back on) with this, among all the other interesting stuff at play
