There has been strong debate om if Blade movie (1998) is actually not just Marvel's first movie(quite successful). But also revive the comic book movies and open the doors for X-men movie(2000). The answer is Yes, it helped open the doors for the X-men movie(which Bryan Singer has mention before in old interviews around the release of the 1st film). People may think Blade was just a vampire movie but it clearly shows in the opening crdeit that this based on a Marvel Comics and the creator of Marv Wolfman. Blade also came on out in August of 98 with a budget of 45 million and ended its run in theatre with 70 million, thats pretty good especially for an R-rated movie(also became a huge success in Dvd sales). This movie had a lot hanging on to it, coming around time when we had unsuccessful CBM(Spawn, Steel, Batman and Robin). So to answer people's question Marvel's very first movie Blade, he may not be a known character like Spiderman or Iron Man but he helped open the doors for future Marvel movies. So people who are saying this is just a "Vampire horror" and not a Marvel movie, is just like saying Punisher movie was a "Crime Action Thriller"

Technically Howard the Duck was Marvel's first feature film. But I agree that Blade was Marvel's first successful movie project.

Ha, open the door to X-Men... Chances are it was in pre-production before Blade was ever released.

Whoever says, it wasn't the first successful Marvel movie, can go F*U*C*K himself, because this is a real good movie, without shitty jokes like in todays marvel movies.

It got Wesley Snipes, Passenger 57! It got a story and good fights.

After the huge failure that Batman and Robin was and the fact that the early marvel stuff was crap and straight to video, Blade was a massive success I had friends who had never been into comics and had never heard off him(myself I had heard of blade but never read anything he was in and my only came across him in spider-man tas)loving blade and especially snipes's portrayal and the early use off slo-mo which would really come to light in the matrix. It was a r rated film so wasn't massive numbers at the box office but good for a movie of that genre at the time. One of the greatest cbms of all time.

Man I tell ya, the only stand alone black Superhero to get a feature film and also start off the genre gets no love whatsoever. I need look no further as to wonder why. It is amazing how the guy that writes Blade goes on to write the three Batman films. Yet receives critical acclaim for Batman and even comicbook fans dismiss it as another movie. Guess we have the reason why we wont have a black super hero lead in movies. Ya'll powder faces wont support that

Hmmm. Powder faces. Well that's a first for me. All my friends and cousins, never heard that one. Anyhoo, they didn't do much back then to market Blade as a comicbook movie. I knew him, loved the movies, yep, even the third film. Unfortunately most people didn't know anything about him. I imagine it was quite difficult to get the studios to greenlight the movie to begin with. The only thing he had going for him at the time was the fact that everyone craved Vampire movies.

powder faces is a term used for cokeheads. And yeh I agree with him not being that popular, but I mean you kind gotta look at it this way GOTG,Ant-Man, Hawkeye, Scarlet witch, quicksilver, black widow, even made up an Agent Coulson. But no Black Panther. Even throwing in Falcon who is as useless as widow and Hawkeye.Truth is Blade was a response to Todd Macfarlane and Spawn. Marvel saw that A Black lead hero was successful and they wanted to bank off of that. Then when Special effects were enhanced they said hey lets do a Xmen movie. And as a comicbook fan. Out of all the movies Blade was the closest to the source material and actually done right not to appease the masses. Imagine if they led off with a rated R Wolverine. the world would say Wolverine put them on the map. But since its Blade get your GPS

Lol! That makes sense now. What you were saying before that is why I thought you meant something else. The problem is a lot of these characters have been around for a long time. Really long time. You have to face the facts, Black Superheroes wouldn't of done as well back then. Nowadays they have to change the characters quite a bit to modernize them. They changed Nick Fury. Are those other characters popular enough to support their own movies? I know Black Panther and a Heroes for Hire would do great. Falcon in his own film, not so much. Would I have cared if they changed Iron man into a Black man instead, nope, that's not the message I want my son to see. We will get more diversity, their just getting started with this universe. Blade was a great movie that really benifited from Wesley Snipes, if they changed him into a white man, who could of done the character as much justice?

@Wyleejay I agree wholeheartedly but with the times being different it really tells me diversity is not on the CBM studios to do list. I grew up with these characters and I admit it is a travisty to see them switched around as far as color and truth be told T'Challa and Static are really the only stand alone black heroes so it is tough to force people to blackwash the comics. But I see them taking liberties with adding an agent Coulson to the Avengers. And say hey I want to show my son a hero he can look up to when I have one. They gave Blade a Noir feel to it so its impossible to let kids delve into that basket. They Whitewashed Spawn. and again as a fan of this medium I would like to see more female heroes and heroes of color as opposed to just blackwashed for supporting roles. I read this website everyday at work and man what a calamity when they said that Human Torch may be Black it was all downhill from there. But I digress. Again Blade was the first big budget film to score dividends for Marvel and set off the modern day Hero revolution at the time when Blade came out Comics were folding fast and Spawn singlehandedly almost killed Marvel and led to a DC resurgence

@Dougdzm. Right on. I don't care what ethnic background a character is. If they changed Tony or Steve Rodgers it wouldn't matter to the characterization. You simply can't change a character like Black Panther or Luke Cage. Their race is a huge part of their characterizations. The Human Torch doesn't have to be white, as long as him and Sue Storm are still brother and Sister. Thats what matters to the characters portrayal. I believe if they do change the Human Torch, and people see that it doesnt really matter, we WILL get to see other BIG time characters get altered too. Its easy to change a character like Nick Fury or Heimdall like you said, but they are so scared to change the characters that are the most popular. That will change. Hell Marvel even changed another Asgardian. Hogun the Grim was not Asian in the comics, but when you think about it, Asgard is another realm, and the Asgardians live for thousands of years. It makes more sense that Asgard would be more diverse.

blade, avengers and iron man= well done comic book adaptations
The crow is a well done movie based on a comic book...I feel like it transcended its genre and was just a good movie.

I'm all for good minority characters of all backgrounds. Gays, punks, different races and genders. You gotta start representing your readers better if you want them to stay around...ask mitt Romney sometime, if you can find him! No black washing or anything like that tho. Try to invent some new characters, or do justice to those we already have.

Blade's not a superhero.
He's a vampire hunter played by a hard-as-nails martial artist-turned actor. Wesley Snipes was badass, but he's doing what either the script or whatever he wanted called for. He's not playing Blade, he's playing.... a badass.

With all the liberties they took with the character too, he might as well be an original creation. It didn't hurt it, of course, but at the same time it's hard to call this a Marvel adaptation when all it works off of are three ideas - one: Blade's birth, two: Blade's mother, and three: Deacon being the vampire who "killed" his mum.

@wyleejay, Oxbow, Tainted 87................ It is such relief to hear that Im not the only one who sees this. Good catch about the Asgardian I didnt even recognize that. But it is refreshing to see that people acknowledge that the lack of diversity will kill the genre or at least make it monotonous. I think DC will get an edge when it showcases diversity by doing wonder woman or Hawkgirl and Cyborg and Icon as well as Static Shock. But keeep going to the well and it will soon run dry

Blade was the first DVD I purchased and was the title I sold most of to people purchasing their first DVD player.

A fantastic move that unfortunately has special effects that haven't held up well. Still it contains one of the best combat scenes in movie history.
