Anthony Mackie Talks CAPTAIN AMERICA: TWS; New Details On 'The Falcon'

We've seen him in multiple set snaps recently, and now while chatting to Entertainment Weekly about his career so far and upcoming role in Marvel's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Mackie reveals a few more tidbits about his character Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon.

Entertainment Weekly has posted a very interesting interview with Anthony Mackie, that no fan of the actor should miss. In it the site confirm that this movie incarnation of his character, The Falcon, is indeed an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., adding that although he'll be a peer of Black Widow (Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), “his sense of duty makes him less cynical and closer to the salute-the-flag sensibility of [Steve] Rogers.” Mackie also explains to the site that his take on Falcon is “a really smart guy who went through major military training and becomes a tactical leader, he’s not some guy that fell into this.” The comic version of Sam Wilson has always been a loyal friend to Steve Rogers, implacable in his sense of honor and duty, and it seems that will definitely carry over to this big-screen version. “The most important thing I got from everybody at Marvel about the Falcon was the need to show that he’s a very righteous, man-forward kind of guy. He would do anything to protect the man next to him and to protect his country. That’s the integrity of the character and the integrity of the man and that that’s what I have focused on.” More from Mackie at the link below.

So he's another S.H.E.I.L.D. agent? I'm shocked!!!!

But seriously, I can live with it, as long as the movie's good and it's my moat anticipated Phase 2 (although I'm most curious about GotG).

I doubt it..thought that for a second but I reckon he was just using him as an example of another SHIELD member.

So what if hes a SHIELD agent? its much better this way. In the Marvel universe there are three ways to become a superhero. Be a mutant or a superhuman, be a SHIELD agent or be an Alien/God.

Wow . . . where'd our imagination go? Soooo Dr. Strange gets his mystic training from the SHIELD manual? Antman, no doubt, NOW works for SHIELD's Micro Research Div.? Ms./Captain Marvel NOW gets her powers from SHIELD via Stark Tech, INSTEAD of the incredibly interestin path she's taken to get here? Is NOVA going to be just another SHEILD agent imbued with a super special Stark Tech Helmet (from the SHIELD Helmet Div.)?
Puh-lease! Lets have some MORE diversity. MORE than what appears to be happening.

And with good reason. That uniform looks fine in the comics but it would horrible in live action. Also in the Ultimate Marvel version, Sam Wilson works for SHIELD and has major military training. His depiction is based off the comics more than people think.

Captain America's uniform reflects what he once wore in the comics. And he's working with SHIELD now.

This is a fake argument. There are more choices available to anyone with an imagination than just:
1) armoring up all our printed comic book heroes so they look and feel like marines with a logo on their chest, or
2) wearing a dance leotard.
NOBODY wants their heroes to look like they are wearing spandex, lycra, pantyhose or jeggings! NOBODY. So those of you who feel more armor, helmets and knee pads are better, please stop accusing those you would call "purists" of wanting to sissify their manly men.
It's a lie and nobody wants it.
What the "traditionalists" want is greater respect for the superhero design and concept. And NOT the ULTIMATE UNIVERSE version - the ACTUAL, "REAL" 616 version. The Standard.
First:
Now, when I bring up the following, please don't freak out. I am only referring to the design of the costumes (and NOT the quality, or lack thereof, of the movie itself). Both Spider-Man (all of them) and Green Lantern's (yes I know, he's not Marvel) costume's looked fantastic. They remained true to the comic source while giving them updated tweaks. Visually both were VERY successful. Again, NOT talking about the flawed plot for Green Lantern. Focus . . . just talking about costume design.
We could also bring up Ghost Rider, Blade, Hulk, and IronMan. But Spidey and Jordan demonstrate the point well enough.
I'm not hating on Marvel for high crimes against my fanboy fantasies. This EASILY falls under the, "Be Careful What You Wish For . . ." category. No, instead I merely want to point out that these are fantastical creations and, in respect for the long standing visual traditions that have brought them successfully from the 60's all the up to modern times (50 years later), that we not throw out entirely, the costumes they brung us here.
UPDATE them. Tweak them, as was successfully done with Green Lantern and Spider-Man. But don't ignore their past and comicbooky design ENTIRELY.
Don't forget, ONE (and I do mean ONE), of the reasons so many people (and by people, I JUST mean people on THIS site) hated Nolan's Batman, was because of the removal of the superhero from one of our oldest superheroes. He's practically IronMan in that suit. Except IronMan had no problem turning his head.
Just because a movie may or may not be successful, doesn't mean the characters represented has ANYTHING to do with the name they're calling it.

@Nomis I've been saying that since first xmen movie, with the exception of captain America in avengers and spiderman their movie looks don't reflect the comic to much, I think their to worried In grounding these fictional characters In Reality.

First off, Sam can still have the same back story AND be a SHIELD agent. He grew up a criminal then got his shit together.
Second, it COULD be the case that Steve doesn't like his new costume. or it could be that it's a reflection of Steve's disillusionment with the current times but then he comes to realize that he needs to wear the red, white, and blue because it still inspires people.
Yeah, I'm a little disappointed that the Falcon doesn't have more red in the costume BUT MAYBE he hasn't adopted the identity of the Falcon yet... Maybe that happens late in this movie or in Avengers 2.
Also, I guarantee you that Steve will get into his old costume (WW2) in an attempt to jar Bucky's memories.

I won't speak for the X-Men but I have to disagree in regards to Marvel. Iron Man's suit looks stunningly like the comic books, so does the Hulk (in the Avengers), as does Thor, Captain America (again in the Avengers) and Black Widow. Hawkeye was more Ultimate Marvel version but I don't consider that a drawback.
jcfrommars9
jcfrommars9 - 6/18/2013, 9:35 AM
@Nomis

The reason I don't mind the looks is because Marvel Comics depicted them long before they became live action. I like the traditional looks myself but I'm not so loyal to them that I can't accept anything else, especially when those looks are also based in the comic books.

Actually it is powerful social commentary. It's about how news and entertainment media too often help create and shape villains not only for heroes to fight but the general public and even the government. Trevor's look paints a disturbing view of what we think a terrorist looks like. He looks middle eastern, he's got that Osama Bin Laden beard, Gadafi sunglasses, oriental robe with military fatigues. This is what Killian plays upon when he's talking to Stark. He was designed to appeal to the preconceived notion of who people already believe to be the bad guy.

It really pisses me of how close minded people can be. The Mandarin twist was genius. The reason the Mandarin twist was so ingenious is because they went physiological with it. I study phycology and I find the twist really intriguing. They took a racist character inspired by fear and stereotypes and turned him into a tragic irony of how we as human beings present threats. Ill elaborate. When Rhodey is looking for the Mandarin he searches only in Middle Eastern countries because due to terrorism people think that the threat is form that area. But if you think about it doesn’t seem logical. The Mandarin has an American accent, yet the government firmly believes that all terrorists are from Middle Eastern areas. Even Tony thought Jarvis was malfunctioning because he said The Mandarin was in Miami. The whole audience were buying this whole Middle Eastern terrorist shtick. Now imagine everyone’s surprise when they found out that The Mandarin was a British drug addict, and the real terrorist was a rich, wealthy, White American. You’d probably feel stupid and even a little bit embarrassed that you bought the whole stereotypical terrorist deal. Aldrich Killians plan was genius because as long as people where looking for the Mandarin he could operate in peace. To quote The Mandarin: ‘You know who I am. You don’t know where I am and you’ll never see me coming.’ This actually tells us the answer. Killian is a very famous and wealthy scientist being in charge of Aim and rebranding War Machine. Nobody knows where he is because they’re all looking in the wrong places. And you’ll never see him coming because he doesn’t exist. Killian played the whole world and nearly won.

@soforizo - You truly think Marvel would do a worse job on the X-men than FOX has? Hell, at least they would stay TRUE to the comics! X2 was as close as FOX ever got and probably ever WILL get to the comics. I would LOVE to see what Disney/Marvel would do with THEIR X-verse. We probably wouldn't have:

1. Magneto as the same villain in ALL the movies. Bring on Apocalypse and the other awesome X villains!
2. Havok and Cyclops would be the same age. Duh.
3. Professor X wouldn't have died and then been reborn into his twin brother's body... WTF?!?
4. Singer wouldn't be the head man. 'Nuff said!
5. No, they wouldn't all be SHIELD agents! :P

The Captain America movie was about introducing HYDRA. Any time you can keep from using the Nazis even in just name is fine with me. We all know what happened and don't need to be reminded.

Im so glad that we wont be seeing the drug dealing, pimp, 70's Blaxploitation Falcon. Would have been UNFORGIVABLE! Im ok with them doctoring his story towards his Ultimate version. I've seen Anthony Mackie on film and I know he's gonna nail this role. Super excited to see this film. I've been avoiding reading posts with set pics because I want to thoroughly and genuinely be surprised/ enjoy this movie when I see it in theaters (Same for Thor: The Dark World). Im predicting both films will be better than Iron Man 3 (just may not out sell it). Same thing needs to happen with Luke Cage (btw Powerman sounds stupid).

I agree with Nomis. Get people who can creatively design versions of the 616 costumes; it is possible. Damn I hate the ultimate universe and lame excuses like, "Well, a costume wouldn't look good on screen." Nonsense! If Spider-man, Superman, Batman can wear costumes, why ca't Wolverine and other characters?

Of course. The point wasn't to show that extremists don't exist but that they exist in all forms. Any race, any gender, any motive, etc. But Killian understood that terrorists these days are most stereotypically portrayed as looking like Trevor than himself. He played on that. Not only did he give the people a target that took any heat off looking into AIM but also to make a false necessity for his Extremis soldiers.
