A Book Written by Robert Jewett and John Shelton Lawrence trys to explain how dilusioned America is by slandering one of our greatest fictional characters. as written by columist Fred Edwords,

"Beginning where their 2002 book, The Myth of the American Superhero, leaves off, the authors of this new work summarize and then expand upon their previous argument that superhero tales--ubiquitous in popular cinema, television, literature, and other entertainments--express antidemocratic values. Authors Robert Jewett and John Shelton Lawrence add that, in expressing such values, these tales help foster "a civil religion that seeks to redeem the world for democracy, but by means that transcend democratic limits on the exercise of power." They argue that the United States is a nation with "a mythic addiction to stories of community impotence and superhero redemption" which renders Americans amenable to "surrendering personal responsibility to savior figures." This Captain America complex, as they term it, shows itself in the way Americans "so often feel chafed by the limits of the Constitution" and are thus willing, for example, to hand tremendous war powers over to a president who promises to use those powers selflessly in an ongoing global and domestic crusade against "evil."

Makes me wonder is these guys had a good child hood!!

I Know, its foolish to think the author has a valid reason to write this book. In my opinion they are trying to make profit, due to the realese of the upcomming movie.

Interesting! Especially since so called "American" superheroes actually find their historical roots most closely in the Greek and Roman legends. Greece and Rome, who were the first real attempts at the Democratic Principles the above authors would have you think these things go against.

I think if anyone mentioned in the article has a complex, its the authors who think that super powers that aren't bound by law were created by Americans. But shhhh, don't tell Theseus that.

Or Heracles and Zeus, Athena, Apollo, Ares, Artemis, Aphrodite(Oh come she has a power gigidy) There are heros in other traditions like Norway, or China: Thor, Dragon people in China, Siguir, Beowulf. I could go on.

Well now that's very interesting. I'll tell you the truth, I am a little perturbed at this. This isn't just banter about movies. This is something that really matters. This book actually makes the claim that Captain America is ANTI democratic? As in against Democracy?? That is absolutely insane and couldn't be further from the truth. How many times has captain America gone againt the US government because they wanted him to do something he didn't agree with? Dozens of times! This is ridiculous, and it's immediately obvious that these two writers don't really know Cap.

I'll tell you what is really going on here. The authors are being disingenuous. Their real problem with Captain America is not that he is antidemocratic, it's that he is CONSERVATIVE. His values are conservative, but the fact is that as most liberals refuse to admit is that Conservatism and "Democratic values" are not mutually exclusive. "Liberty and justice for all" and "equal protection under the law" are actually ideals that both Libs and Cons have and those are two things that Cap espouses. The real reason they are smearing him is because in popular culture, that is a favorite theme, and as with all themes found in popular culture this one h=is highly overwrought and over blown.
I am sorry, but this is just as wrong as wrong gets. And what a horrible time for something like this to hit the book stores because love of country and patriotism is one thing that could help drive up the numbers for "The First Avenger...." If this book makes the guy sound like he's like Nixon or something, people that read it might not want to see the movie.
