Anthony Mackie On Why 'Bucky' And 'Falcon' Shouldn't Become 'Captain America' After CIVIL WAR

There was a time when only Bucky was the next logical choice to become Captain America, but with Falcon now taking that role in the comics, Anthony Mackie explains why neither should replace Steve Rogers after Civil War. He also talks about being beaten up by Ant-Man...

As of right now, Sam Wilson is Captain America in the Marvel Universe. That doesn't look set to change going into the publisher's "All-New, All-Different" relaunch either, and while only Bucky was a possible candidate to take over the mantle from Steve Rogers a couple of years ago, you have to believe that there's now at least a chance it could be The Falcon instead. However, that's not something Captain America: Civil War star Anthony Mackie is overly keen on happening. "I don't think we need a new Cap. I don't think Cap needs to change," Mackie said at the Salt Lake Comic Con (via The Salt Lake Tribune). "I think [Bucky's actor Sebastian Stan] would be a great Cap, but then we're left without Bucky. I think I'd be a great Cap, but then we're left without a Falcon."

That's a fair point, and it sounds like Mackie is more than happy in the role he has, especially as The Falcon brings some much needed diversity to the roster of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. "I feel like kids don't get race. We preach so much to kids that you can be anything you want to be, and then we follow it with 'except,' and we have to leave that 'except' off." Finally, talk turned to his battle against Ant-Man in that character's solo outing earlier this year, and the fact that The Falcon came out on the losing end. Or did he? "I don't know how you all do it in Utah, but when I see two people fighting and one dude gets more punches in than the other dude, that dude won the fight … [And] I hit him more!" Would you like to see Mackie's Falcon become the next Captain America?

I agree with him, I hope Evans stay in the role. Falcon is just a great and fun character.

Not a fan of Steve Rogers passing down the mantle, at least not this early on in the MCU.

And nope, Falcon lost convincingly. Ant-Man is actually one of the stronger Avengers.

@Jeight - "There can be consequences without main heroes dying. I don't see anyone wishing for Batmans's death in JL. Why should Cap bite the bullet?"

The movie is Civil War & what happened in the CW story in the comics???

Plus, Evans only has one movie left on his six-picture contract, while Sebastian Stan has I believe seven movies left of his nine-picture deal.

The timing is a little more convenient than it is coincidence, no??

I doubt he's going to die considering it's been confirmed a few times that he'll be in BOTH Infinity War movies.

"The movie is Civil War & what happened in the CW story in the comics???".

If anything he should be arrested just like at the end of the 7-issue event and should only die if they want to pass the title to Bucky. Cause Cap dying in his own book was more about Bucky's redemption after being Winter Soldier for so long than about the Civil War event even though that was a byproduct of it.

Smh......silly fanboys wanting Bucky or Falcon to become Capt. America just because that's what happened in the comics. Let me repeat this: the movies do NOT have to copy the comics exactly!! Stop it with this nonsense. If you really want to kill someone off for consequences (also a dumb idea imo), kill off Hawkeye or Bucky or someone else who isn't as big. (But not in Civil War. You don't want it there to be even a slight possibility that one hero killed off another. And even if it was Crossbones who killed someone, it might look like Tony was responsible because he was fighting Cap instead of helping him.)

American Eagle would have been a great name! Maybe their could be something like Cap going missing, and Bucky and Sam taking up the mantle in his absence temporarily.

Falcon has no powers. Can't be a Cap.

This is really bugging me: 1. Cap didn't die in Civil War. He turned himself in. He was shot and "killed" in his own book as part of an unrelated plotline, they just used his Civil War perp walk as the opportunity to pick him off in public.

2. Civil War was an attention-grabbing gimmick overflowing with characters acting out of character or just plain stupidly and the less they specifically borrow from the comic the better.

Anyway, does anyone really think Marvel would let their golden poster boy Downey be responsible for the death of Captain America? And then have a tortured, guilt-ridden Tony Stark leading the Avengers without his walking, talking conscience when Thanos comes to Earth?

Yeah Civil War made Iron Man and half of the Marvel Universe look like tools and it made the X-Men look like Switzerland, but I think they'll try to make it more convincing in the movie.
1. Tony wants to redeem himself for Ultron, and he wants to take down the Winter Soldier because they killed his parents. Also since Ultron failed, Tony wants to make sure everyone is on the same page for when Thanos makes his masterstroke.
2. Cap doesn't want another Hydra-run government like in Cap 2.

@Jeight - "Cap will be In Ifinity War man, he has said it numerous times. He may die in the hands of Thanos but he will get out alive in 2016."

I never said Cap will not appear in one of the Infinity War movies.

However, therein lies the rub. Chris Evans has only one film left on his contract, which means he can only appear in one of the Infinity War movies. Sure, Evans & Disney could agree on an extension, but until then, I'm only basing this on what we know, not hypotheticals. And given Evans' contract, if Rogers "dies" in Civil War, then he'd almost certainly be brought back to life for one of the movies only for his contract to expire. I'm not a fan of this idea as I've mentioned before how much I loathe/oppose bringing characters back from the dead.

Ideally IF Rogers is killed for whatever reason, I'd MUCH rather it be during Infinity War 1 than during Civil War. Why kill Cap & bring him back to life when he only has one film left on his contract, ya know?? I still don't like bringing characters back to life, so if they must, it'd be different/better if they agree to an extension, so he's not revived to only be one & done, contractually.

Rogers being killed during IW1 makes significantly more sense. It would complete Evans' current contract & could/should be a great farewell/ending to his run as Cap. His death would inspire & motivate the Avengers to "avenge" Cap's death, much like Coulson's death in the Avengers.

And it'd be the best opportunity for Bucky to take up the Cap mantle, avenge his fallen friend & redeem his character's brainwashed actions. Plus, Sebastian Stan has six or seven films left of his nine-picture deal, so it seems the pieces are falling in place for Bucky becoming Cap. It's almost a guarantee Bucky will appear in one or both Infinity War movies, which leaves four or five movies left on his contract. So, it's safe to assume Bucky's Cap will get his own solo movie, maybe his own trilogy, in addition to future team-ups/Avengers movies.
