CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR Writers Reveal Whether They Considered Adapting This Controversial Comic Book Moment

Captain America: Civil War pays homage to Marvel's Civil War event in various ways, but it leaves this shocking moment in the pages of the comic books. Why? Here's how the writers justify that choice.

WARNING: Spoilers For Captain America: Civil War Follow

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice shocked us all by killing off the Man of Steel (even if we already know that he'll return in Justice League), but Captain America: Civil War took things in a very different direction to the comic books by leaving Steve Rogers alive and well by the time the credits rolled. That's no bad thing - because, let's face it, we all love Chris Evans - but there are many fans disappointed by the fact that the movie doesn't adapt the events of Captain America #25. That issue by Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting saw Cap gunned down by Crossbones and a brainwashed Sharon Carter, with it later revealed that the bullets had sent him back in time so the Red Skull could steal his body...it's not really as confusing as I'm making it sound and is well worth a read if you've never checked it out.

Regardless, when Yahoo Movies caught up with Captain America: Civil War screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, they explained why that moment didn't make it to the big screen. "We never really went into this with the intention of killing Cap," Markus revealed. "One, because he doesn’t really die, so we weren’t going to do the time bullet [like in the comics]. And there are other movies coming, and it’s like, 'Are you gonna kill him?’ And you get crap for fake-killing people. We fake-killed [Nick] Fury [in Winter Soldier] and it worked pretty well, but… At a certain point you’re lessening the gravity of the movie when you kill somebody, because people are like, 'Oh now we’re in comic-book world because he’s gonna come back.’ So you get more gravity out really hurting somebody." Some criticism has been levelled at the movie for a lack of ramifications, but it's hard to argue with that explanation, especially as we all know Cap would return in Avengers: Infinity War

Heroes live on for years in the comics, but in movies everyone wants them to die a couple movies in for some reason.

@PeterStarker - Those are the people that enjoyed BvS. They are also called C.u.n.t.s

Nah, not necessary. Especially since that went down in BvS it was a very good idea not to do it.

@ElJefe - Makes me wonder if they shot it and decided not to use it because of that. The difference of course is Infinity War doesn't really need Cap, but Justice League and MoS 2 definitely need Superman.

@CapnSquintyEyes - True, Capn. But I don't think they are ready to lose Evans for awhile. They need to build s new roster first - maybe after Spidey, BP, and Doc Strange are ready they can switch it up. But I think Evans has lots of good movies on him and his personal story arc is just getting interesting

@ElJefe - I agree they probably don't want to lose Evans, but Sebastian Stan is signed for NINE MOVIES. So far he's only done three, and besides the Infinity War movies, he probably won't show up again in phase 3 other than possibly Black Panther (which would be great). I think we'll see a fourth Iron Man and Cap, where they pass their mantles on to other heroes.

@Termin8er - If they somehow pass it on naturally through story progression - and not just recast Tony and Steve - that would be better for me

@ElJefe - I don't think they're gonna let Downey and Evans go. And they don't want to go. Downey has extended his contract three times already. I think they'll pass their mantles to other characters, and Tony and Steve will rebuild SHIELD together, with Stark as the Director and Rogers as the head agent. Thor becomes king of Asgard and passes his mantle on to another character. That way Marvel can keep Downey, Evans, and Hemsworth in smaller, mentor roles which will allow them to make other movies and will allow Marvel to not pay their original three leads too much money.

@Termin8er - That storyline would be great - but I'd like to see them stretch it out and not rush

@ElJefe - I feel the same way. I think they'll do Iron Man 4 and Cap 4 and possibly Thor 4, where they pass their mantles on to other characters, so it will make sense. Hopefully.

@ElJefe - My feeling after Winter Soldier was that Evans was more than capable of replacing RDJ as the hub actor/character for people to congregate to. But it seems like both are open to more films (RDJ already adding Civil War and Spidey to his workload) so I'll take what we can get while we can.
