Dark Horse Unsure Of What Disney's Purchase Of LucasFilm Means For Future Comics

So, now that Disney owns LucasFilm, we'll see plenty of new Star Wars comics from Marvel, right? Wrong. Dark Horse still has the license to publish books based on the franchise, and while this won't necessarily last forever, president Mike Richardson has issued the following statement.

Dark Horse has been publishing Star Wars comic books for well over 20 years, but their partnership with LucasFilm will more than likely be coming to an end very soon. As you should already know, Disney owns Marvel, so common sense says that they will soon be handling the lucrative job of publishing comic books based on the iconic film franchise. As of right now though, Dark Horse holds the license, and while the following statement (released via IGN Movies) from Mike Richardson seems fairly optimistic, it's hard to imagine "the near future" lasting much longer. As the site points out, "when Disney bought Marvel, the Disney/Pixar properties that had comics being published by Boom! Studios eventually reverted to Marvel" and so it seems likely that the same will happen again here.

"Dark Horse and LucasFilm have a strong partnership which spans over 20 years, and has produced multiple characters and story lines which are now part of the Star Wars lore. Star Wars will be with us for the near future. Obviously, this deal changes the landscape, so we'll all have to see what it means for the future."

I didn't see this one coming either. I hope Disney does not make Star Wars Episode 7 way too much PG-13!

Blah, blah, blah! Star Wars has sucked ass since Empire. Getting rid of Lucas is the only hope this franchise has.

Not saying they will, but if they wanted to, the Star Wars universe could easily be integrated into the Marvel Comics Universe.

Because Star Wars takes place in a distance galaxy and has never involved Earth, that universe could be transplanted into 616 without any conflicts or contradictions.

I think they should have a crossover universe. I always wanted Spider-man to kick around Darth Vader. :P No offence Star Wars fans. ;)

This was one of my first thoughts when I heard about the deal. The pity is that whole series will most likely be killed off only because some artists and writers would refuse to work for Marvel.

On a sidenote...I guess Lucas won't have to go around shopping his live-action TV series anymore since Disney owns ABC as well as several other channels.

I REALLY hope Dark Horse gets to keep the property. Granted, Marvel is full of talent, but Dark Horse really owns the art of staying true to the spirit of the source material in comic book form.

Even if Marvel do publish the comics, it's doubtful they'd cross over into the MU. Marvel already publish/have published other sci-fi properties such as Ender's Game, Dr. Who, Transformers, etc. which didn't necessarily result in a bunch of crossovers.

If Marvel do get the rights, I can see them being pretty respectful of the universe's integrity and keep it self-contained.

In a video game mash-up maybe, but in other media it would be bunk.

"So Luke, you've met Spider-Man?"

Nah.

I'd be pissed! Dark Horse has the best Star Wars stories ever. Darth Maul: Death Sentce was amazing.

You guys at Dark House had an awesome run. I grew up reading a bunch of Dh Star Wars comics and graphic novels and still them to this day but, yeah, those days are most likely over. Star Wars is going back to Marvel where they originally started (comic book wise anyways).

Just have Disney buy Dark Horse too. Can't be that big a price tag.
