BATMAN: THREE JOKERS #2 Preview Pages Reveal Another Major Twist About The Clown Prince Of Crime

Batman: Three Jokers #1 revealed that there are at least three versions of the Clown Prince of Crime in the DC Universe, and it was heavily hinted that there may have been even more than that. It's a bizarre, compelling twist in the life of The Joker, and it seems things will get even stranger in issue #2.

In this new look at that second chapter (which goes on sale on September 29th), we learn that "The Comedian" appears to have a home life, with a wife and child waiting for him. It's possible that they're just his hostages, but that really doesn't seem to be the case, and the villain having a child could have major ramifications in the DC Universe moving forward.

"As Batman and Batgirl follow an unexpected thread linking the three Jokers with someone from the Dark Knight's past, Red Hood dives headfirst into trouble and finds himself struggling to stay afloat without the aid of his allies," reads DC's solicitation text for Goeff Johns and Jason Fabok's second issue.

"Batman: Three Jokers continues its trajectory as the ultimate examination of The Joker and his never-ending conflict with Batman. Prepare yourselves for the second chapter of one of the most terrifying and personal mysteries Batman has ever faced!"

Spooky. Think it's actually his kid or some family he kidnapped?

@TheMapleSyrup - given the way they act, if it is a family he kidnapped he did that a while ago. The wife at least has stockholm syndrome.

OmegaBlack13 - 9/25/2020, 1:42 PM
@Origame - That doesn’t seem like Stockholm syndrome. She’s clearly scared and seems to want to leave.
Origame
Origame - 9/25/2020, 2:09 PM
@OmegaBlack13 - i think there's a lot to interpret here. You see her too scared to leave, i see her clearly abused but still wanting to stay. Listen to how she comforts her son by talking about him being upset "because daddy hasnt been home" when he wants to run away. Its not like joker is close enough to hear them, so its not an act for him. I think she's delusional to the torment going on.

@TheMapleSyrup - Maybe I am reading it wrong, but the wife looks like his wife in the flashbacks in The Killing Joke. Since those had a questionable level of "Did it happen?" my thought on seeing the images is this is that wife if she didn't die, and the kid is the older version of the baby who died with her.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/25/2020, 4:37 PM
@Origame - I'm pretty sure she's saying the son is upset because "daddy" hasn't been home much because she doesn't want Joker to think the son hates him and is terrified.
Origame
Origame - 9/25/2020, 4:45 PM
@CorndogBurglar - Considering he'd probably say something about junior was trying to leave, it's pretty safe to say joker is out of earshot and they both know it.
Repian
Repian - 9/25/2020, 6:18 PM
@DalekCraigWasson - It is obvious that the joker's wife did not die. Neither did her baby die.
Scarilian

@TheMapleSyrup -
It's clear they are kidnapped/held hostage. The imagery of the child holding the railing is intentional to show they are trapped in a prison. This is echo'd by the mother's words that she can "only keep him downstairs for so long" - implying he clearly will act violent towards the child unless they play 'happy families'
TheMapleSyrup
TheMapleSyrup - 9/26/2020, 4:21 PM
@DalekCraigWasson - that's a really cool take. That would be super interesting
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/26/2020, 9:11 PM
@Origame - I don't think so because the text in her dialogue bubble is smaller than all her other text when she says "I can only keep him downstairs for so long". When they do that in comics its supposed to represent someone speaking quietly or whispering. Which means that Joker could likely hear the other things they were saying.
Origame
Origame - 9/27/2020, 1:44 AM
@CorndogBurglar - but by that logic, then what she is saying is implied to be quiet enough for him not to hear. Yet she isnt trying to tell him to quiet down or actually address the problems he clearly has (not wanting to be around the joker) but instead pretends the problem is hes upset joker hasnt been around enough.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/27/2020, 4:38 PM
@Origame - Right. Because if Joker can possibly hear them, she wants him to think the kid is upset because Joker hasn't been around enough. She DOESN'T want Joker to think they hate him. Its a show. Which is why the only time she breaks that "show" and says something truthful is when she whispers to the kid that she can't keep him downstairs forever.
Origame
Origame - 9/27/2020, 6:10 PM
@CorndogBurglar - wait, shes whispering something joker would want to hear but is only truthful when whispering?
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/28/2020, 4:21 AM
@Origame - No. She's whispering something he WOULDN'T want to hear. She's whispering "I can only keep him downstairs for so long".

Everything else she's saying normally and is trying to make it sound like the kid is upset because he misses Joker. That way if Joker can hear her, it sounds like the kid actually likes him and misses him and wants him around. And she's doing this to protect them. Joker has obviously terrified these two. You can tell from the look on her face.
Origame
Origame - 9/28/2020, 4:40 AM
@CorndogBurglar - That was already blown when he said he wants to leave.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 9/28/2020, 5:15 AM
@Origame - He said why don't we leave, and thats when the wife started making excuses, that she knows he's upset because Joker isn't around. She did that in case Joker heard him say why don't we leave?

At the end of the day, its blindingly clear that they are terrified of him and don't like living with him. You can tell by her terrified facial expressions and by the way her words are broken and stuttering when she talks.

Its pretty clear that she is just trying to appease hi. So he doesn't hurt them.
Origame
Origame - 9/28/2020, 5:54 AM
@CorndogBurglar - "i wanna leave this home because this person isnt here a lot until this time when hes actually here". Come on, that would be blindingly obvious even if we weren't talking about the joker.

Man forget that I’m about to run out of gas. Gotta call AAA. Does anyone have
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje’s number?

I’ll show myself out.

(He should be on the Boys or something cuz marvel and DC both did him dirty...

I want to start reading this just off the absurdity and bizarreness of it all
4thMaster
4thMaster - 9/25/2020, 1:35 PM
@ItsMilesMorales - Aside from the inherent absurdity of the 3 Joker concept, it's all very straightforward. There's not a lot of playing around with the concept & it's possibilities in the first issue.

Nightwing1015 - 9/25/2020, 2:43 PM
@8thDoctor - I say literally killing one of the Joker is certainly playing around with the conecpt. You couldn't do that without 3. That was intense and im interested to see where it goes
4thMaster
4thMaster - 9/25/2020, 4:07 PM
@Nightwing1015 - It could be, depending on what they do with it in the next couple of chapters, but it just felt like a classic shock ending for now.

The Joker dies so often he has a trope named after it: Joker Immunity. Snyder 'killed' the Joker twice almost in consecutive arcs (chronologically they were consecutive as Zero Year was the divider). Morrison put a bullet through his forehead. It's what you do with that death that counts, which I don't doubt Johns will do something interesting with it in addition to Bruce sidelining Jason on the case, Jason disobeying & then getting into real trouble.
Nightwing1015
Nightwing1015 - 9/25/2020, 4:33 PM
@8thDoctor - I guess that's true Morrision did that, but Snyder didn't really kill him either time. It was clear he was coming back on both occasions. This time, that version of Joker will stay dead. But I agree, it's mainly the consequences that I'm interested in.
4thMaster
4thMaster - 9/25/2020, 5:07 PM
@Nightwing1015 - This specific Joker got shot up by an Iranian with an automatic rifle inside a helicopter that crashed & exploded with him still inside, &still made it back just fine. I know he's proper dead now, but it's hilarious the things that he's been able to come back from. If he came back in issue #3 with a band-aid on his forehead I wouldn't bat an eye. LOL

The first issue was one of the best comics I've read this year.

The opening few pages were just brilliant.

@marvel72 - lol what? What was brilliant about them. He is clearly following Alan Moore's formula but not in a very creative or meaningfull way. But if you have a more profound analysis than i do i'd like to read it.

The Joker's driving around town in a color coded van & the batfamily can't find him? LOL
His family died in TKJ, so I'm guessing this are kidnapped people. Unless that was all a farce by the OG Joker, & here they alive & well, but I doubt it.

I have my money on the woman killing this Joker at the end of the issue, if Johns is just going to kill 2/3 or even 3/4 (if their plan works) of them so everything goes back to the usual status quo by end.

Seems like a hostage situation to me. If not, once again, all this series is doing is negating the myth that Batman is the world's greatest detective. Either way, this information would have to be on someone's radar. Good gosh I know a kid wouldn't be able to keep it's mouth shut.

DC has just absolutely no idea what to do with this overused character anymore. This isn't even mildly interesting.

@soberchimera - Jason killing one of the Jokers is more interesting than anything going on in the current main series run tbh. Also, the art is much better.

@Nightwing1015 - Well it's not like anything King or Tynion have done with Batman has really grabbed my attention either...
