The first story arc of Tony S. Daniel's Detective Comics run did a good job of bringing a good, quality story for new readers to jump in. Intriguing, dark, and it's Batman. Doll Maker could have used a little work, and really the only thing we care about is what's up with ol' Joker, but it gave us a solid tale of mystery and suspense. The new arc begins with this issue, with a classic foe as the villain. While not as impressive as the debut issue of the first arc, it's still a pretty solid start.

It begins with a bunch of Joker protesters chanting for Batman's death. Meanwhile, Batman runs into a 'Joker' who manages to evade him. The plot deepens when Bruce's girlfriend seems to have a secret agenda. This is being watched by the crime lord known as Penguin....

I've always considered Penguin to be a lame villain. Batman's version of Spider-Man's Vulture. Recently Vulture got a major revamp, updating from 'lame' to actually 'cool.' I had a strange feeling that same would happen here, and it did. The Penguin looks to be a meancing force here. He's only appeared in one page so far, and he already looks to be more of a threat and more fun to read than Doll Maker. Oh, and is it me, or is this Penguin thing similar to what happened with Vulture three issues ago in Amazing Spider-Man? Penguin has some flunkies similar to that of Vulture's, and their personalities seem to match. Not saying anything's copied, it's just interesting.

Batman still carries the book with those thought boxes. The whole Joker protest was interesting and really makes you think how corrupt Gotham is, or as Batman put it, "Hellhole." Interesting predicament is with Bruce's girlfriend. It looks like she's going to have a generic plot twist that we've all seen in past Batman stories. (He can never truly win with the ladies, can he?) Then there's this mysterious Joker supporter who shows up, kills some guys, then manages to evade Batman. Impressive, so I look forward to seeing what's up with that. A crime to this issue however, is how short it is. We get a pretty long Catwoman backup story, it's not clear if the ending pertains to that series or this series, probably this series. I don't mind backup stories, but the main story was too short, while the backup was too long.

Once again, the art is great. I say this every time, so I don't think it's necessary to keep mentioning it every time. But, as a longtime reviewer, gotta keep mentioning it every issue. Pretty good cover, showcasing Batman and Penguin. The Penguin has never looked more menacing. (I'd like to see this guy have a chat with Vulture over at Amazing Spider-Man, it would be priceless.)

Overall, a solid start to the new arc. Not as great as the previous debut issue, but a solid one. Penguin is back, and has never looked more cool. Detective Comics is a series you'll want to be reading if you like Batman and mystery.

8/10.

This is one of the few New 52 titles I am actually reading. The rest have been disappointing or unnecessary.

@TheGODDAMNSUPERGUY I'm not 'wasting' anything, I really like this series. And yes, I would pick up Snyder's Batman, but I can't add yet another ongoing series to my list.

What issue? I liked the previous issues and it started off okay but when things started getting interesting BOOM, its over. Very lame DC.

I also didn't care for the cards thing. Catwoman's cool and all but she kinda showed up out of nowhere so it really wasnt a good cameo.

Hopefully next issue is better.

Great review. I have to admit that this has been one of my favourite books of the new 52. I love the vintage Batman and Superman but it's been great to see a misunderstood alien in Action Comics and his push for acceptance despite his heroics. And it's great to see Batman back to being a detective in this run. We get an insight in to what he is thinking when trying to unravel the mystery of the Joker's 'defacing'. I, sadly, dropped 'Batman' as it felt a little generic and I wasn't a fan of the artwork. But 'The Dark Knight' was a worthy replacement. As was 'Detective Comics'. WIN

Hate to disagree... but anyone that enjoys reading a comic where Batman actually goes STRAIGHT INTO an angry Batman hating/Joker supporting mob to try and reach a murder happening on the other side of it, and then have Batman sreaming at the top of his lungs to try to convince the crowd to let him by, simply couldn't know good writing if it kicked them straight in the ass. That was the laziest writing i've read in a long ass time, especially for a character that should be a hell of a lot easier to write than most, given all the brilliant past writing he has as a blueprint. Tony S. Daniel couldn't write a grocery list to save his life, let a lone a comic. He's practically making Perez seem noteworthy. Is this DC's way of making Morrison seem better than he truly is, by surrounding him with the shittiest writing the industry has to offer? That's probably also why they don't publish as many books as Marvel do, because bad writters with experience to prove how worthless they are, are hard to find in mass in today's industry.

I mean, they can't possibly ask Geoff Johns to write every single book, or can they?

@Destroyer14

I havent pickid this up yet, but I really liked the first arc.

You just got me a little worried, one of my main beefs with comics these days is how short the issues are or how everything seems to move at a snails pace and they drag everything out as much as they can.

So when you said this issue was too short and I have problmes of this sort with the average issue its making me think twice about picking this up.

Fastest- Yup. Eleven pages. I would have asked for a refund if I could have. BS.

Also I'm glad you brought up Morrison Shaman. Every time I pick up one of his books I experience and overwhelming sensation of meh. Not but just... meh. Still, I heard a lot of people say he's the best out there. I don't get it.

Yeah, 11 pages is way too short. Quite possibly the weakest issue in the series so far, hope the next issue makes up for it though.
