The New 52: Positives and Negatives

The New 52: Positives and Negatives

In this editorial, I, a new DC Justice League reader, write why the New 52 was necessary, its great positives, and explain why releasing it now wasn't a wise move on DC's part....

It wasn't too long ago that DC announced that they would be "revamping" their universe with new origins and the numbers starting back at one. The fans were outraged, the comments nothing but bashing and bashing this controversial move. For me, it was just another article. I haven't bought a DC comic since Infinite Crisis, I collect Marvel and IDW's Godzilla. So this whole thing didn't bother me, DC has always seemed like a messed up continuity of elseworlds. I still had no intention of checking any of the series out, I was tied up with Marvel and Godzilla. However, this changed. I was handed a free sampler of the New 52 at my comic shop. Looking through it, it seemed not bad, but something clicked when I read the Justice League one. The art was what grabbed me, it just looked like the best art I have ever seen in comics. Watching Batman and Green Lantern interact for the first time in so long was a treat for me, the comic itself looked really, really high-quality. The sampler did its job, and I bought the first issue of Justice League yesterday. (My review here: http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/Destroyer14/news/?)

Now that I'm done with the life and times of myself, I can really begin this editorial.

If you read my review, you would know that I thought the issue was excellent. It was everything a first issue was supposed to be. I know the Justice League from the cartoon years back, so I know the characters pretty well. See, with DC, it's hard to get into a series with so many storylines going on. Marvel on the other hand, has always been more new-reader friendly. Their events have always done a good job of making it new-reader friendly while at the same time continuing the saga for the fans. I rented DC's Final Crisis from my library not too long ago. While it was very interesting, I didn't really understand a lot of it, due to me having no prior knowledge of what was happening before.

Before the New 52 I've always read articles on DC online, it wasn't getting the best reviews. (Superman: Grounded? I mean really?) They have a history of elseworlds, different earths, it was hard to keep track. Every so often they would have this thing called a "Crisis" where it would involve a lot of different earths characters, so much, that it's just hard to concentrate when too much is happening at once. A character called Arion from a 2006 Superman comic said it best. Dialogue as follows:

Superman: "Wait. We just stopped a crisis like this, turned back a tide of darkness and chaos..."

Arion: Yes. And yet you never notice, do you, that it always returns, always worse?"

I am surprised that they do never notice. They keep happening and happening, to the point where it gets old. These crisis are just so huge, and way too many characters that for people that haven't read previously wouldn't get it that much. A new reader just wouldn't know where to begin, because too much is happening. That is why I think the New 52 was a great idea, it brought all those other versions and messed up continuities under one earth. I, someone who hasn't been interested in picking up a DC comic, is now collecting one. Though I do get why the fans still don't approve....

I'm going to pretend for a moment that the same thing is happening with Marvel. I'm going to pretend that at the end of Fear Itself, Thor goes back in time and destroys the Serpent before he was ever created. That sends a ripple effect changing the whole Marvel universe. It is then announced that Marvel will be starting over from scratch, revamping everything with updated origins and number ones. Would I be annoyed to have to read how the Avengers become a team after years of knowledge and reading them? Maybe.

For the Avengers, I wouldn't be that annoyed, cause they first banded when I wasn't around, back in 63. So it would be fun to see how an updated origin would look. To start out fresh. However, to watch Spidey get his powers all over again would be very annoying, since I know everything about him, and how far he's evolved as a character. In other words, I could see why the longtime readers would be annoyed. Will they stop buying? I don't think so, they might buy them grudgingly, but I could see them accepting it over time.

There was one thing I thought was wrong to do on DC's part. It was to release it right now. Why? Both Marvel and DC like to market their films so that the audience can run to the comic shop to purchase the movie character's series. Let's face it, right now all DC has is Batman. They failed with Jonah Hex and they sadly failed with Green Lantern. Not much people have any interest in reading about either character. I think it would have been a much better decision to put off Flashpoint and the New 52 until 2013, when the new Superman film comes out. I can picture people coming out of the theater and not wanting to have to wait to see Superman's next adventure on the big screen. So, imagine seeing a powerful Number 1 in the comic book store. And once Batman concludes his trilogy next year, I'm sure non-comic fans of the film will want more. The following year, they'll see Batman alongside Superman on the Justice League, two of their favorite characters under one series. Releasing the New 52 alongside The Man of Steel would have been better marketing for DC. That is why I think it wasn't a wise decision to release the New 52 this year. I mean, by the time The Man of Steel comes out, the comics will be up to like what, number 46?

Writing so much about DC makes me want to buy more comics from them, but I could only afford Justice League. Alas, was the New 52 a wise move? Yes, I think it was, I know some people who are now getting into the DC universe thanks to the new Justice League series. Superman may look a little strange with the belt, but I am looking forward to future issues. Go to your comic book store and purchase Justice League number 1, it is worth it.

Great write up. I loved Justice League #1...it's early days, but this relaunch seems like a great idea so far. He only had a few lines, but it was fantastic to read a Superman who isn't a whiny (middle aged?) bore a la "Grounded".

This reboot still annoys me enough that I will not be reading any DC for a while at least until I hear very good things about the new series it just seems like a smack in the face to long time readers, all of a sudden nothing you've read matters in any way any more and that has pissed me off enough that I will be strictly marvel for at least a few months. It's sad because I have happily read most comics from both companies for years and now my comics are halved, I may pick up DC again but only if I hear great things and stop feeling so pissed off at the complete destruction of years of continuity, I appreciate their desire to attract new readers but does that really need to come at the cost of alienating long time readers like myself? In summary for at least the next few months make mine marvel.....only

I, also, have been predominantly a Marvel reader, going back to about '75. I think this is probably a smart move on the part of DC, but resetting some continuities while leaving others intact (mostly) seems needlessly confusing. I'm really looking forward to Morrison's Action Comics, hoping that I'll finally find a Superman read that doesn't bore me to death.

To be honest, I was extremely excited about the new 52. This is and will be my first time buying a comic book on a regular basis. It was a perfect time for me to jump on board and start reading with the revamp.

Looking at the issue:
I enjoyed Justice League #1, but I was a little disappointed because I saw most of the panels in a preview.

So here's hoping to the next issue! I can't wait to see a Superman/Batman skirmish.

Good write up. I loved the new JLA and am excited to see what happens.
The people that are closed minded for nothing are being ridiculous. Why so scared of change? Its not eliminating any of the past. And if it doesnt succeed they can switch back. Give it a shot.
By being closed minded the only people missing out are yourselves. Especially if its a good thing in the end. How do you KNOW this wont be better than it was? You dont. Give it a shot before bitching

Hopefully Captain Marvel, Orion, Black Adam, Atrocitus, Darkseid, Doomsday, Martian Manhunter, and Firestorm play a bigger role in this reboot. By the way what Flash are they going with Barry or Wally? I like them both but prefer Wally. i also hope Lobo and Guy Gardner get a lot of face time too!

I Get a Feeling Dc is Going To Get Alot Of New Readers, I being one of them. This reboot allows alot of people to get in at the ground level, and i havent been able to do that with american comics in 5 years, so im happy to finally have comics i can feel personally attached too from the beginning

Number 46?
July of 2013 is what 21 months from now?
So, at most, issue 21. Take into account the fact that each series will probably have about 3 collections that will be easy to find. I once caught up on a 70+ issue series (While maintaining work and school) in about a week. 21 issues would be a cake walk UNLESS you don't like to read (So, why're you getting into comics?). However, I see your point that it's not just 21, it's 21 times 52, BUT by your logic people will only be interested in about 3 series' (SMan, BMan, JL, because people coming from the movies won't know about Inc., which will be out by then, Dark Knight, which I doubt will have more than 14 issues, Detective, or Action). Also, I have no doubt that Justice League will suffer from lateness.
SO, not only is it good for building interest in comics right now, but people looking to read because they saw TDKR or MoS will be met with a reasonable amount of material that will serve to get them hooked rather than one issue that, due to the impatience you've assigned them, they would probably read and think "A month, I don't want to wait that long" and get distracted by something else.

All in all, I agree with your article with the exception of stating that their timing was off.

all i want is Detective comics, Batman, Batman & Robin, batman : The Dark Knight, Batwoman, Knightwing, and Batgirl, and i'm a happy camper. Batman is the only franchise that isn't getting rebooted yeah ! !

Number 46 was just a wild guess, I just threw it out there.

@js1216 I like your points, with the collections and the others. I still do think that releasing number ones alongside the film is a sound idea, I don't see fans purchasing a trade paperback when they could start fresh with a number one.

@Destroyer14, most people who are "Fans" of comics because of films would actually rather pick up a Trade. This day in age, a lot of people think of trades as a better deal for some reason. It's probably because you don't have to wait to finish the story and because it's all in one book. I prefer single issues. I believe that most true fans of comics prefer the standard format (Monthly books). There are a lot of people, though, who buy Trades from Book Stores and have probably never set foot in a comic store, but "Love comics."

I do feel like the companies should do book-based sequels to the films that come out about a month after the film, because that would help bring business from people who saw the movie and because I wouldn't mind a continuation from the movies, provided they're good.

its not zoo much the reboot that bugs me its the awful re designed costumes i mean didn't batman just get a costume change at the beginning of batman inc like a year ago and now he has another same with wonder woman they changed her costume less that a year ago and now they changed it again and superman is horrible his costume should be untouchable every knows and loves superman the way he looks you want to get more readers in write better stories superman walking across america is one of the stupidest things ever .. and I love grant morrison but his writing isn't easily to get into for batman .. if they would have given us a good green lantern movie then those comics would be flying off the shelves . i hate how they say they wanna bring in younger readers younger readers don't have money to buy comics .the olders one like myself are the ones that go weekly to the comic shops and drop 30 dollars on books not my little brother who doesn't have 5 dollars to spend on 1 comic book

I have to say, it is easier for fans to swallow DC rebooting their characters, this is their third big reboot: 1956 with the Silver Age Flash, 1985 with Crisis and now 2011 with Flashpoint (wow flash has ushered in a lot of these reboots hasn't he?). Hell by those numbers I wouldn't be surprised if we saw another reboot in 2045! We as a community are used to DC changing their continuity and making their characters more shapable for different times. When it was announced that Superman would no longer be with Lois post reboot, I was a bit miffed but it made sense, it is for the longevity of the character first and foremost. When Marvel rebooted Spider-Man and took away his marriage it was because Joe Quesada didn't like the marriage and was a man with too much power.

It's a bit of a shot in the foot if marvel did reboot themselves now, seeing as they have never been one to do the universe wide reboot it would seem very out of place in 616 and I think would anger a LOT of fans more so than DC.

Sure i'm still a little bit annoyed with the DC launch but hell, something in the industry needed to be done i'll give them that and their doing something. Thats worth reading something for.

Justice League #1 was all right but Jim Lee's designs are too busy. Surely Green Lantern should be more organic, and if they are meeting for the first time why do the costumes have similar elements?

Regarding Batman I'm personally not a fan of him being DC's version of Iron Man. My ideal Batman has vehicles, grappling gun/hook, batarangs, lock picks, smoke bombs and Robin. These days he just seems too high tech.

The story seems promising though I still feel that the JL is overpowered.Regarding the reboot I don't think it was necessary, new volumes can be reader friendly for example - Thor, Iron Fist and Punisher Max (Garth Ennis), I use Marvel examples because those were books I picked up when I started reading comics again.

What i loved about John Byrne´s run on Superman were (aside of the amazing art) the stand alone stories.

Then came the "Lois & Clark" TV Show which i loved as well.

Then Byrne left, Jerry Ordway took over, crossovers started poluting the stories, and I left the book for a while.

I picked up again with the "Death of Superman". Loved the series , the Aquaman by Peter David, Superboy stories, the Steel comics.

Then came the outstanding Supergirl by Peter David and Gary Frank. Man, what a story!

Then after a while I started to follow "Justice League" by Grant Morrison, i loved this series very much, but I abandoned for a while when weird mystical characters like Manitou Raven started to appear.

Gee, guess i never really stopped to read Superman comics.

What i meant is, that Superman and League always had plenty of jumppoints.

hey guys, im new to all these comics. i was like Destroyer...it was way too confusing for me. What are the best series out of the new 52 to pick up? i already know ill be getting Justice League, Superman, and Action Comics, but what about all the new Batman and Lantern series? which of those would be more worth reading?

@mbomb22, I can definitively recommend the new Batman series. Scott Snyder's writing it and his run on the last couple of Detective comics was awsome and something you should pick up (shouldn't be really confusing) it's a good contained story. Johns's Green Lantern I've been reading and liked so I can also recommend that also but his writing isn't for everyone. (but i do think mostly marvel fanboys seem to bash him).....

After 31 years of reading DC, I found this a great jumping off point. Maybe I will read them again in 2-3 years.

Reboot/revision/restart/rehash

For me, DC sucked all the fun out of their comics. 52, countdown, Infinite Crisis.... ETC. By the time I read the 2nd or 3rd issue of Flashpoint, I just couldn't care.

Hopefully this will bring on new readers, but I will be moving on.
