COMICS: Matt Fraction Discusses The Defenders And Teases Marvel's Next Epic Event

On the next Mavel Epic Event Set to hit in 2012:

"I'll say this — there's a reason that Fear Itself, X-Men: Schism, and Children's Crusade are all ending around the same time. All of these moments are going to converge into this one giant epic."

On his new series The Defenders:

"When I began pitching the book, editor Tom Brevoort at Marvel began shorthanding it as the "Casanova Avengers." By the time Defenders is done, you're going to know why everything that has happened in the Marvel Universe has happened, why everything that is going to happen will happen, who's behind it all, and who benefits. It's this very, big, creepy, sprawling cosmic threat that they're defending us from, quite literally. It tells the story of "Why?" I can't believe all the crazy shit I'm getting away with."

On how he keeps track of all the stories he writes:

"I have a lot of notebooks and sometimes I use index cards. It's a very sloppy, very organic process, and my mission is "Don't get bored." I do about a book a week, that's my goal."

So,Fear Itself, X-Men: Schism, and Children's Crusade will all lead into the next big Marvel, cross-comic event. Any ideas as to what the mystery threat could be? Sound off below.

Matt Fraction, is an Eisner Award-winning American comic book writer, known for his work as the writer of The Invincible Iron Man, The Immortal Iron Fist and Uncanny X-Men for Marvel Comics and Casanova for Image Comics.

Fraction started out at Comic Book Resources, ("Poplife" and "The Basement Tapes").

Fraction started creating comics with smaller publishers including AiT/Planet Lar and IDW Publishing. He became known early in his career for his creator-owned work on The Five Fists of Science and Casanova, before taking on a number of increasingly high-profile assignments for Marvel Comics.

Fraction teamed with Ed Brubaker for an acclaimed run on Marvel's The Immortal Iron Fist. The pair re-teamed on Uncanny X-Men for a short time, after which Fraction wrote the series solo until leaving it in 2011. He is currently writing The Mighty Thor and The Invincible Iron Man, the latter of which led to his consulting work on the set of the film Iron Man 2. He also wrote the Iron Man 2 video game that tied into that film sequel.

In 2011 Fraction wrote the event limited series Fear Itself, which was the central book of the crossover storyline of the same name. His next project is a late 2011 relaunch of Defenders with artist Terry Dodson.

[frick] EVENTS TO HELL!!!

Here's hoping Fraction isn't writing the next event because he REALLY dropped the ball on Fear Itself. Same applies to Bendis with his past few as well...hell, the only truly great modern event from Marvel which didn't end in disappointment or completely failed to live up to the hype was Civil War by Mark Millar.

ANOTHER Event!? What happened to no longer doing events Marvel!? But Marvel lying to us isn't anything new.

They BETTER make this new event interesting or else I'm passing on it like I did with Dark Reign and Secret Invasion.

marvel needs to take a break form events, they have lost their impact because they happen every year. I skipped fear itself completely.

@HelaGood and Jordanstine

I think that's what he meant by "contemporary". AoA was a long time ago. But yes, had it been on the list it probably would have received my vote as well.

Yeah, X-Men books were the only Marvel books I used to read.

Dark Phoenix Saga is one of the best.

Aside from X-Men, Planet Hulk was really great too.

be honest guys did you like siege because it was a great story or because coipel art kicked ass?
JoshWilding

Siege was far too short. It wasn't a bad story at all, but it desperately needed another issue or two. And don't get me started on how underwhelming the lack of confrontation between Spider-Man and Norman Osborn was. A single punch? Great. The problem with Marvel (regardless of how good or bad their events end up being) is that their events often fail to live up to the hype and the aftermath - stuff like "Dark Reign", "The Initiative" and now "Shattered Heroes" - often fail to truly do anything other than launch a few new series and last more than 12 months. Thank God for the work people like Slott, Remender, Waid, Rucka, Aaron and Gillen are doing.

I hate modern event comics. I remember reading in an interview with Marv Wolfman that he envisioned how event comics should only serve one purpose: to provide whatever cleanup was absolutely NECESSARY in a fictional universe. But no, once they saw the sales figures, it went to their heads.

Civil War was great IMO. Annihilation and Thanos Imperative were excellent, I really liked how those two reinvented Nova into the Badass character as he should be.

Shaman: You took the words out of my mouth, buddy! Endless 'events' are what finally drove me away from buying Marvel.

Teabag: I'm with you on preferring the old-style self-contained story lines.

Probably that Ultron stuff. I'm on the fence. Fear Itself was okay to me but it was kinda pointless. I'm convinced Marvel only had Fear Itself to show how awesome Steve Rogers and Thor was because of their movies. But there has been a lot of foreshadowing on Ultron (if that is the next event) and i think it might be cool.

Well, the next event might have something to do with that fiery bird image teaser with the names of almost all of Marvel's writers attached...Especially if it leads to X-Men vs. Avengers over Phoenix..I mean,Hope. Cable's return may be setting up for this..

Yeah, i think we can all agree with Teabag in saying the good ol' "self contained story lines with guest character appearances" days were definitely the way to go. I don't mind huge crossover events as long as they don't directly link onto ongoing series. I know it's cool when events affect certain details in the ongoing books' continuity but most of the time, it doesn't benefit the ongoing stories. It just adds convolution and confusion. Then retcons need to happen and before you know it, the entire event would have been better lying on the cutting room floor. Either just make huge 12 issue events that take place over the full year WITHOUT putting out ongoing parallel series or JUST HAVE ongoing series all year 'round with occasional "elseworld/what if" separate crossover events. But doing both in the same continuity at the same damn time is like riding a horse and a mule tied up to each other. IT DOESN'T [frick]ING WORK!!!

Will we ever see a year again with no cross-comic-epic events? That, for once, would be epic. Let these characters be themselves for awhile.
