COMICS: Warren Ellis Returns To Marvel For Orginal Graphic Novel AVENGERS: ENDLESS WARTIME

The writer behind Iron Man 3's Extremis comic book storyline is returning to marvel to pen an original graphic novel with artist Mike McKone. Set for an October release, Avengers: Endless Wartime appears to have a strong focus on Captain America.

Avengers: Endless Wartime by Warren Ellis


Recent years have been light on original, out-of-continuity graphic novels from either of the big two comic book publishers but Marvel is looking to get back in the game with Avengers: Endless Wartime from Warren Ellis (The Authority, Planetary) and Mike McKone (Avengers Academy, Teen Titans). Ellis last wrote for Marvel in 2010 on the mini-series, Astonishing X-Men: Xenogenesis. An abomination, long thought buried, has resurfaced in a war-torn land. But now it wears an American flag. @TheLibrarian You scan your smart phone or tablet at the book and additional content plays like creator interviews, character history, etc.

How come the big two stopped doing original graphic novels? Those are the classic stories that I'll always remember.

I always loved original Graphic Novels; so many of them always felt like special events, long before crossovers took hold. Remember Mignola's Dr Strange & Dr Doom? Or several of the Silver Surfer GNs? DC had plenty as well in the 80s and 90s.

I would have no objection if comic book stores became, well, book stores. Many of us wait for the trades anyways, and then buy them on Amazon to boot. I'd much rather go to my favorite shop and get the Parker novels there, etc

FINALLY! let's get some intelligent writing behind these characters. don't get me wrong, i love the monthlies and the action they bring to the table. but there's no reason WATCHMEN should still be the best comic on the shelves. not when you have have a sandbox like Marvel's or DC's to play in.

out-of-continuity mini-series or GN. that's where the best stories can be told. Marvel get's it.

I'll have to look at this when it comes out to decide if I want to buy it. I usually prefer to glance through a graphic novel first to see if I like the art and to get a little feel for it.

Norrin: I'm all for graphic novels- I loved Emperor Doom back in the day, along with any number of great one-shot Batman or Superman stories. I'm also all for trade paperbacks. Those are a great and affordable way to enjoy stories I may have missed.

This must mean that the Joe Quesada era at Marvel's publishing arm is well and truly over because he has said on many occasions that he has no interest in publishing OGNs.

@Pharaoh - so true! It's difficult for me to be that patient (I'm always a year or two behind Hellboy), and I DO have to go on SOME "media blackout" for spoilers, but it's always worth it for me for the eventual reading experience, and I don't miss the ads for Iron Man bed sheets.

I just loved how often there would be self contained, epic, and exclusive stories, and always treated ambiguously in the canon. Special stuff

Is it officially out-of-continuity? Not that it really matters. Pretty much anything Ellis writes for the Big Two is future retcon material. I miss Nextwave.

Warren Ellis + Avengers + OGN = sold. Or read for free at Barnes & Noble, at least...

both dc and marvel should do MORE of this instead of the worn out 'event crossover' stuff. i miss stuff like Kingdom Come, Marvels, The Nail, etc.
