Last year, a new era of Captain America began as both Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson picked up the shield and embarked on separate journeys in the pages of Collin Kelly, Jackson Lanzing, and Carmen Carnero's Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty and Tochi Onyebuchi and R.B. Silva's Captain America: Symbol of Truth.

This April, the two Captains will reunite for Captain America: Cold War, an explosive crossover event that will make them question everything they believe in...and each other.

An espionage-fueled action thriller, the storyline will pay off various plot threads that have built up in the pages of both acclaimed titles including the rise of the mysterious Outer Circle and their shocking connection to Steve Rogers, the surprising return of Ian Rogers, a.k.a. Nomad, Sam Wilson’s intense conflict with Wakanda and White Wolf, and Bucky's bold new mission as the New Revolution.

In this April's Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty #11, a Cold War prelude, picks up with Captain America and the new Invaders, now free from M.O.D.O.C.'s mind control, are not yet guaranteed their lives. With the battle nearly won, the Outer Circle has arrived on the ground to collect their prize.

It’s up to Steve Rogers to wrestle victory from the Power and finally end the Outer Circle's invasion of Manhattan - but choices made at this critical point will alter Steve's understanding of friendship and the stakes of his fight against the Outer Circle for good.

Then Kelly, Lanzing, and Onyebuchi team up with artist Carlos Magno to begin the revolution in Captain America: Cold War Alpha #1. Bucky Barnes is the Outer Circle's New Revolution, and he has enacted his deadliest move yet - an alliance with Sam Wilson's nemesis, the White Wolf.

When Steve Rogers' adopted son, Ian, a.k.a. Nomad, is abducted by someone Steve thought was a friend, he suspects Bucky's hand at work and calls upon the people who know Ian best - Sam Wilson, Sharon Carter and Misty Knight - to help him get to the bottom of the attack. Has Bucky finally gone too far? Why has Nomad been taken, and what does it have to do with a portal to Dimension Z opening over a secret battleground in Alaska?

In Captain America: Symbol of Truth #12, White Wolf has used the power granted him by Bucky Barnes to take control of Dimension Z and unleash its creatures onto the Captains America. Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers are prepared to fight their way through the onslaught, but the Outer Circle has more stakes in this fight than our heroes realize.

Can Sam Wilson and Steve Rogers agree on their priorities before they fall to this new threat? And what exactly does Bucky Barnes intend to do to Ian Rogers?

You can check out the covers for each of these issues below by artists Carmen Carnero, Patrick Gleason, and R.B. Silva.

I still don't understand why The Falcon has to be a Captain America too? He was an awesome character already. I noticed how the Black man has to have the White man's codename and not the other way around to be elevated for some reason by Disney Marvel writers. They keep doing this with their non-white ornon-male characters as if their individual identities weren't good enough already. The name Captain America is nothing more then Steve Rodgers codename, it's not a mantle or job title or military designation.

@WarMonkey - Did you also say that when Bucky became Captain America in the mid 2000s? Because Captain America being a mantle was introduced a long time ago and he took the mantle years before The Falcon did so what you're saying doesn't make any sense

@WarMonkey - For all of its faults, the Disney+ show Falcon and the Winter Soldier does a pretty good job at explaining why Sam needed to take up the mantle. That is, if no one stands for the symbol, then others will seek to destroy its legacy or manipulate it for their own means. That's how you get John Walker, that's how you get Flag-Smasher. Sam steps up to be Cap to represent the ideas that Steve has established.

So why does he stay as Cap, despite Rogers' return? Let's look at DC for a moment -- There was Batman Inc., a loose network of people who were inspired by Batman all across the world. There are multiple Batmen, why not Multiple Captain Americas?

Also, Captain America is certainly a mantle in the comics, passed between many characters. Some of them were installed by the U.S. Goverment as if it were a military title/designation. Many of these characters were not black, but I'm sorry it seems to be a problem for you when it is a black character.:

Steve Rogers
Bucky Barnes
John Walker
Sam Wilson
Isaiah Bradley
William Burnside
William Naslund
Bob Russo
Scar Turpin
Roscoe Simons
Jeffrey Mace
Roberta Mendez - Captain America 2099 (yes, they keep up replacing the role for over 150 years)

@caffeinearchive - Yes. Reason I love superheroes is because of their individuality. As in, it's a universe of diverse characters with powers or certain skills that they use to protect others who can't protect themselves. So if Superman dresses like Batman for a night so the villains and people won't think he's not around that is cool. But when another individual takes the same codename "to carry on the mantle" I find that uninteresting and lame. Only way I like it is something like batman Beyond but in that case it's the far future and people thought Terry was the original Batman at first and the name was used as a strategy to confuse his enemies and to remain anonymous.

@WarMonkey - I bet you didn't even know this bc your argument was completely based on race and now you're changing the focus to something else

@TheRose - Steve rogers is Captain America. I never read the Batman Inc stuff I thought that was a terrible idea. The mantle idea has been and still is lame. This whole idea of a codename being a symbol is silly to me. It's the codename of Steve's he was given during the war and then he still used it when he thawed. He dies or goes away then that doesn't mean the codename is now a symbol of anything. It's still just the codename Steve used.

@caffeinearchive - Not true at all. I wrote "The name Captain America is nothing more then Steve Rodgers codename, it's not a mantle or job title or military designation." as my conclusion. Everything before that was responding to this article and the topic at hand and then I summed up why I thought this way with the last sentence.

@WarMonkey - Well if you don't like Legacy characters, then of course this idea isn't for you.

Admittedly, it's hard to unravel the idea of legacy characters without getting into the weeds of mass market appeal vs. orginal content. You could make the case that Sam is an instance of a character being made into a Legacy out of mandate, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't make sense for his character or that he is a bad fit. Quite the contrary, he honors Steve's legacy while also being able to realize that he is NOT Steve.

It doesn't work for every character and both Marvel and DC have flooded their portfolios with (sometimes too many) Legacy charcters, but there's a place for them since heroes, in many cases, are symbols of the individual that can stand for others.

@TheRose - that's why I have a problem with the whole idea of mantle passing. The Falcon was already a bona fide superhero in his own right and was one of the 1st black superheroes ever created. So to assume that wasn't good enough or something I find offensive as a Falcon fan. Why couldn't Sam as The Falcon just be focused on without the name change. Like, Cap falls and Falcon rises instead of Cap falls and Sam takes the codename. These writers would never have Steve take The Falcon codename.

I've known and been a fan of The Falcon for like 30 years now so for me I find it kinda disrespectful.

@WarMonkey -

I'm not completely against the idea of legacy characters, I'm just not sure why Sam had to be a legacy character? He already had his own hero identity and his own legacy to forge, that if Marvel weren't race baiting racists, could've made as important as Captain America's by writing Sam better stories and making him more popular as a hero. Ask yourself this, would Iron Man ever step down as Iron Man and forever take the mantle of Captain America? Of course he wouldn't because he's IRON MAN he's equal to Captain America, he's forging his own legacy, his own path, that would be a demotion to him, they've made the Falcon identity a lower rank, rather than trying to bolster it to the same importance and power of Iron Man, Cap or Thor. John Walker or even Bucky taking up the role of Captain America made sense because they had no previous identity, and this is where mantles work for me. Bucky's was a war criminal who needed redemption, John Walker was just some random soldier, Falcon already had his identity. The best he could've done was become Captain Falcon or American Falcon as homage to Steve, his friend while still keeping his identity, but now he's forgone his identity completely to continue to bolster one already made famous by his massa.. sorry I mean his friend he stands along side with...

@Chaos200 - I love the idea of American Falcon, that's a cool name for a superhero! What a better message that would be too then giving him someone else's codename
