This is an older article but I wanted to repost it so people could have some of their questions answered. It shows the current ownership of Marvels biggest comic book characters. I assume all the characters not named here are still owned by Marvel but I will have to do some more research to make sure of that.

Here’s a breakdown of the whole thing in list form (any characters/franchises not listed are under the rights of Marvel Studios):

20th Century Fox
•Daredevil: Daredevil/Matt Murdock, Elektra (Natchios), The Kingpin/Wilson Fisk, Bullseye, Jack Murdock, Karen Page, Ben Urich
•Elektra: Christine Cord/Tatoo, Typhoid Mary/Marry Alice Walker, Kirigi, Stick, Stone
•Fantastic Four: Doctor Doom/Victor von Doom, Human Torch/Johnny Storm, Invisible Woman/Susan Storm, Mr. Fantastic/Dr. Reed Richards, The Thing/Ben Grimm, Nova/Frankie Raye, Alicia Masters, Willie Lumpkin
•X-Men Mutants: [Agent Zero/Maverick/David North], Angel/Warren Worthington III, Arclight/Phillippa Sontag, Beast/Dr. Henry Phillip “Hank” McCoy, [Blob/Frederick J. Dukes], [Bolt/Christopher Bradley], Callisto, Colossus/Piotr Nikolaievitch Rasputin, Cyclops/Scott Summers, [Deadpool/Wade Wilson], Emma (Grace) Frost, Jean Grey/Phoenix, Juggernaut/Cain Marko, Gambit/Remy LeBeau, Glob Herman/Herman Gardner, Iceman/Bobby Drake, Jubilee/Jubilation Lee, Katherine “Kitty” Anne Pryde, [Kestrel/John Wraith], Lady Deathstrike/Yuriko Oyama, Leech, Magneto/Erik Magnus Lehnsherr, Mastermind/Jason (Wyngarde), Multiple Man/James Arthur Madrox, Mystique/Raven Darkholme, Nightcrawler/Kurt Wagner, Phat/William Robert “Billy-Bob” Reilly, Professor Charles Xavier, Psylocke/Elizabeth “Betsy” Braddock, Pyro/St. John Allerdyce, Quill/Max Jordan, Rogue/(Anna) Marie, Sabretooth/Victor Creed, Sebastian Hiram Shaw, [Silver Fox], Siryn/Theresa Rourke Cassidy, (The) Spike, Storm/Ororo Munroe, Wolverine/Logan
X-Men Non-Mutants: Drake Family (Steven, Madeline, Ronny), Grey Family (Dr. John, Elaine), Henry Peter Gyrich, Robert Edward Kelly, Dr. Moira Kinross MacTaggert, Dr. Kavita Rao, William Stryker, Bolivar Trask, Warren Worthington II

New Line Cinema
•Vampires: Blade, Deacon Frost, Dracula/Vlad Tepes
•Non-Vampires: Hannibal King, Abraham Whistler

Sony Pictures
•Ghost Rider: Ghost Rider/Johnny Blaze, Blackheart/Legion, Phantom Rider/Carter Slade, Abigor, Gressil, Mephistopheles, Wallow, Barton Blaze, Roxanne Simpson
•Spider-Man: Spider-Man/Peter Parker, Doctor Octopus/Otto Octavius, Green Goblin/Norman Osborn, (New) Green Goblin/Harry Osborn, [The Lizard]/Dr. Curt Connors, Sandman/Flint Marko, Venom/Eddie Brock Jr., Betty Brant, Dennis Carradine (Buglar), J. Jonah Jameson, Ben Parker, May Parker, John Jameson, Joseph “Robbie” Robertson, Gwen Stacy, Mendel Stromm, Flash Thompson

The possibility of Marvel having complete control of their character properties, like its comic rival DC, is a matter of time.

Dude, time, about 20 or 30 years...

Its a damn shame, I blame MARVEL for whoring them all out in the first place... not thinking to the future and only caring about the mighty = $$$$$$$$$

I wish they had the rights like every fan, but they [frick]ed it up. : (

At least we have WB/DC!!!

GR8 article by the way!

LEE @ Well to be fair, they were on the verge of going under. Marvel had to sell the rights to their characters in order to prevent bankruptcy. They had no other alternative at the time. This acquisition by Disney will be the big step in gaining back those rights and quickly, In the next few years, 2-4 years, I think.

i wonder if their a clause in the contracts such as

1.fox own the rights to all the mutant titles, but deadpool isn't a mutant.

2.if they don't use certain charactors could marvel take them back, for example scarlett witch was in the avengers line up.
i wouldn't mind her making an appearence in avengers 2.

i suppose this is just wishful thinking.

So all we need to do is kill Fox and Sony, have a pleasent conversation with New Line, and Marvel gets the rights to their own universe

......until the Kirby kids return....

Definitely boycotting X-Men: First Class and the Spidy reboot. It would be like boycotting the next Resident Evil movie. I'm sure I'd like the movie, but no biggie if I never see it.

It's great they got Punisher back. Only a matter of time until Fox STOPS milking completely X-MEN. I'm seeing a bunch off shitty spin offs and sequels. They have 3 spin off franchises in the works. Three! What is this shit?

NJdevil12 - 8/11/2010, 11:42 PM
Thats cool, but what i wanna know is when exactly the rights would go back to Marvel if production didn't start on any of those movies. I heard that Ghost Rider goes back to marvel if they dont start production by mid November i think.
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 8/12/2010, 10:03 AM
guys, Disney and Kevin Feige themselves have said that they have no plans whatsoever of getting these rights back. And as long as Fox and Sony and the others are making money off these properties, the idea of of them selling the properties back is a little crazy. They'll hang on to these rights until the CBM craze is long dead and they can't make any more money off of them.

i love how fans are even putting time spans out there now. "oh yeah, i give it 2-4 years..." and who are you exactly? lol
CorndogBurglar
CorndogBurglar - 8/12/2010, 10:08 AM
@ LEEE

its not like Marvel "whored" their properties out for no reason. They were going bankrupt, dude, lol. Can you really blame them for saving their company?

I didn't see Wanda and Pietro Maximoff on that X-Men list. That's a good thing.

How does Marvel have Punisher rights and the Ghost Rider rights were in jeopardy but they don't have Blade or Daredevil rights yet? Did they pick the ownership terms out of a hat?
HotHead
HotHead - 8/19/2010, 12:08 PM
attention everone! marvel secretly has the rights to blade and company after the last movie was in 2004 and theres no plans for new films and they will anounce the return of the charecter to marvel at an upcoming con like the punisher.
