AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: Nick Spencer's Run Reaching An Abrupt End With Issue #875 This September

It looked like Nick Spencer was building to something huge with Amazing Spider-Man #900, but Marvel Comics has now announced that the writer will leave the title THIS September. Read on for details...

Nick Spencer's Amazing Spider-Man run will conclude with issue #74/#875 this September, a huge surprise when it looked like the former Captain America writer might be around for the long haul.

During his run, the writer has brought Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson back together, killed Kraven the Hunter, and resurrected the pre-"One More Day" Harry Osborn as the sinister Kindred. There have been lots of hints that the infamous storyline might somehow be undone (and that Harry's return was a consequence of Peter breaking his deal with Mephisto), but there's not long left to wrap that up.

Spencer's final issue will be 80-pages long, with artwork from Patrick Gleason, Mark Bagley, Marcelo Ferreira, and more. Whether the writer always intended to end things here is hard to say, but it's certainly going to be interesting seeing where he leaves things for his successor.

"The last three years of AMAZING SPIDER-MAN have been Nick Spencer’s love letter to his favorite character and comic," says Editor Nick Lowe. "He may be the biggest Spidey fan ever as evidenced from the fact that he read every Spider-Man comic in preparation for his landmark run."

"From #1 all the way through #74, Nick (along with Ryan Ottley, Humberto Ramos, Patrick Gleason, Mark Bagley and more) has gone huge with more villains, more supporting characters, and more punishment for Peter Parker. From 'Hunted' to 'Sins Rising' to 'Last Remains' to 'King’s Ransom' to 'Sinister War' and now to the ultra-sized finale 'What Cost Victory' Nick will bring his web-slinging rollercoaster ride back into the station in a way you’ll never forget!"

Amazing Spider-Man #875 will be released on September 22. There's currently no word on who will be taking over, but it's said that there's news coming next week on that front, so stay tuned.

A middling, sometimes enjoyable run. Nowhere near as bad as his Secret Empire stuff.

Props to somebody at Marvel for finally moving away from that One More Day/Brand New Day shite, but damned if I'm not surprised it was Nick "Hail Hydra" Spencer. His run has been pretty good. Hope the next writer can take it to the next level. Chip Zdarsky did a great job with Life Story, but I'd like to see a fresher face.

@PapaSpank54 - Never understood all the outrage back in the day with the Hail Hydra plotline. Was it really any different than all those bizzare clickbait twists comics pulled in the 1960s. Where Batman turned evil for one issue or similar nonsense. We all knew it wouldn't stick around so I didn't see the problem.

@Nightwing1015 - You'll have a hard time finding it because I'm pretty sure all mention of it might have been scrubbed in the years since, but in an interview following Cap's saying "Hail Hydra," Spencer said explicitly in no uncertain terms that it was a dig at then-Pres. G.W. Bush. Within days, he completely changed his tune and cranked out another explanation once he realized what he'd done.

@weirdestthing - But that plotline was in 2015?? Bush hadn't been President for many years by that point.

Haven't actually read anything form this Spider-Man run, so should I be sad about it coming to an end? As in, is it worth picking up?

I thought he was gonna reach the 100th issue, reverse the OMD bs and THEN leave...maybe.

Don't tell me he got cockblocked, kinda like King on Batman (but that was a blessing).

Marvel comics have been in such a poor state for far too long. Zdarsky is all they got right now. They need a Tynion.

@McMurdo - What about Al Ewing?, Donny Cates, Jonathan Hickman?

this guy was giving us really cool stuffs, and erasing OMD and reusing old concepts, its a shame

As someone who enjoyed his run, this is sad. It wasn´t perfect but it was much better than Slott´s. Hope the next writer is good though.

Well from the look on her face MJ sure seems to be enjoying the way she’s holding on to Spider-Man on that cover. 🤣👍

So was reversing OMD purely Nick Spencer or is it still the plan?

I wasn't a of Event Spencer (though I'm not a fan of events period), but I was enjoying what he was doing in between those mandated dumpster fires. As long as they continue his work to undo OMD and most of the stuff Slott left behind then I can live with it.

I've read most of the run, I've enjoyed the ride. I wonder who is taking over.

@Thing94 - Well Hickman is leaving X-Men....., but Zdarsky is my 2nd choice.
