Matt Ryan Weighs In On Possibly Bringing CONSTANTINE To The Big Screen

Constantine is one of the best DC Comics adaptations currently on TV, but for whatever reason, simply not enough people are tuning in every week! Here, star Matt Ryan talks about what's to come and whether he would like to make the leap to the big screen as the Hellblazer character...

NBC and DC Comics could not have found a better John Constantine than Matt Ryan, and his passion for the series and love for the character are clear to see. Ratings haven't been terrible so far, but a Friday night slot is not a good one for any show and Constantine isn't bringing in anywhere near the numbers it deserves. With any luck, that will soon change, especially as a number of familiar comic book characters will soon debut. Among them is Jim Corrigan, better known to comic book fans as The Spectre. "Jim Corrigan is a New Orleans homicide detective and he stumbles across a supernatural event so-to-speak and his world is thrown into bits," Ryan tells IGN in a recent interview about his introduction. "He and John cross paths and at first they go at logger-heads because he doesn’t believe this world. What’s good about Jim and John – that duo – is that they both kind of want the same thing, but they both go about it in completely different ways. They’ve both got dark souls. And they both deal with that darkness in a different way as well. With Jim it’s quite heavy, and with John he’s developed this armour of lightness. Obviously with John it’s a lot deeper rooted. The darker the problem, the lighter he is. But then when you do open that shell in him it’s an outpouring – there’s so much sh*t in there. And in later episodes we really get into all that stuff as well and it’s really been great to play all that dark stuff."

As for who else from the comic books we should expect to see, Ryan dropped a few names which will definitely be familiar to Hellblazer fans. He also teased some possible plans to head over to the UK to reveal exactly what happened in Newcastle. "We’ll be introducing Anne-Marie. If we go past 13 episodes we’ll be introducing Judith. What we’re doing is introducing slowly the Newcastle crew, and what ‘s great is that you get a different element of John through each of these characters because of the different relationships that he has with them. And then there is a possibility of us doing the Newcastle episode – what happened there. Hopefully if all goes well we’ll get to it. I’d love for him to travel to London as well and do an episode there. I think that would be great." Pacific Rim (ugh) director Guillermo del Toro recently revealed that he
would be open to casting Ryan in the long delayed Dark Universe, a.k.a. Justice League Dark, and this is something Ryan would also be interested in! "What’s so great is that there’s so many great storylines and the Justice League Dark stuff as well. How fantastic would that be if we could do something like that? Obviously those things are out of my hands, so we’ll see."

Friday night time slot, kiss of death for many shows...too bad (I have all eps DVR'd, will try to catch up soon) most on here say it's a very good show...

I love this show, but airing it at 10/9c on Friday night is a terrible decision. I hope NBC renews it if it keeps improving creatively like the low viewed Hannibal.

Love this show so far and I like that they get his snarky northern england wit and humour (which i can relate to) and i also like that they're not afraid to show hes a selfish human being who will do whatever it takes like the comics.

He's great as Constantine, but the show itself is kinda weak so far. Monster-of-the-week is always shit.

The ratings are disappointing. I don't want this show cancelled. Seriously, like in tvline, people comment and keep comparing the show with Sherlock.

Because of this time slot, I have forgotten to watch it thus far. I have forgotten to record it as well. By the end of the week, when I am done with my work, my brain is a bit fried, and then I log on to this website and get a full-page pop-up add for Monster High School, which sends me into such a rage spiral that I forget all about poor Constantine. I would like to watch the show. I blame the Monster High School adds on this site. Please make them stop!

Hannibal had worst ratings ... Constantine is safe fellas , don't worry ! Ratings increased last week. 3.44 Million viewers I think. Hannibal had 1.98-2 Million viewers , still got renewed for 3rd season ! Stop worrying , enjoy the ride !

Well, I enjoy the show. Supernatural was formatted similarly and look how long it lasted. And soon, Sam and Dean's adventure is coming to an end (if it hasn't yet) and this is the closest thing to it I've seen.

They need to move it to Thursday night. As much as I'd like to watch I just can't do that Friday night time slot.

It's my fave CBTV show over anything else. I haven't read any Hellblazer comics yet, & only know Constantine from the JL Dark comics & the Keannu Reeves movie.

Please stay on.

I think Supernatural is precisely the reason Constantine hasn't taken off. No one can watch every show, even with DVR. Constantine is going over the same territory that Supernatural has been covering for years. Outside of hard-core comic geeks (like me), I think most people who want the angel/demon warfare genre are going to watch the show that's already entrenched. If you ignore the comic book connection, Constantine is trying to reinvent the wheel.

That.. and that it's on Friday night..lol

IMHO it deserves to die, it's just not very good. The tone is off, there's no sense of time or place, the scripts are crap with poor pacing and flow. The music is awful, generic music paste. It has no gravitas, no sense of dread. It basically feels like a cheap Syfy production, like Warehouse 13 or something.

Ryan is the one good thing about it, and it's a terrible shame his talent and ability to portray Constantine pretty well were wasted on this mediocre show. It's easily the worst comics tv show this season, which makes me very sad because I love Hellblazer.

Matt Ryan IS the best part of the show. He is perfect in the part, but the show just needs time to find its stride.
I'm sure it will continue to get better and better!!!

This doesn't give me much hope for Supergirl on CBS. Major networks aren't willing to take the risk with these properties (yet) - It is great that they gave the show a chance but they've neutered it, tamed it down and put it on Fridays.

Matt Ryan is the shining star of this show thus far. Last Friday's ep. really showed what a dick he is at getting the job done no matter what. If the major networks want these comic book properties to really take off, let them breathe and let them comic book adaptions, not this bs watered down 'Grimm' stuff. Comic Books are crazy, out there and nuts. Embrace all those elements instead of taking those elements out. Arrow figured that out towards the end of the season and has improved drastically since then, and people seem to love 'The Flash' jumping right in there with all the crazyness. And for god's sake, SHOW HIM smoking and his other debauchery activities. Who cares if people are outraged about it, that may cause some people to tune-in and get some more eyes on it.

I am surprised 'Gotham' has done as well as it has.

"One of the best DC comic adaptations currently on tv".... out of the big whopping 4 ? ;) good show but it's behind Arrow and Flash....so it's just better than the Batman show that doesn't have Batman.

"Monster-of-the-week is always shit."

Um yeah, ok. Whatever you say, buddy. Tell that to 'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' creator, Joss Whedon and his 7 seasons. And oh, the 6 seasons of 'Angel' too.
