Cowboys & Aliens: A Pleasant Surprise

Cowboys & Aliens: A Pleasant Surprise

Surprisingly well crafted film for more than one kind of audience. I always love seeing post Y2K westerns, and this was a solid movie outing.

Jon Faveraeu’s recent outing seemed as impressive and action packed than even the critically acclaimed fan favorite, Iron Man. With a heavy hitter cast of Daniel Craig, Harrison Ford, Olivia Wilde, Sam Rockwell, among other lesser known actors full of talent, this movie aimed to please. I felt like I just played poker at a Saloon and got a Royal Flush in spades.

This is indeed a western. As silly as the title and idea may sound, this film was full of grit, emotion, and action that would put other films to shame this year. Without giving any spoilers, I will tell you to avoid spoilers for this one. There are plenty of fun twists throughout that’ll give you pause and awe. The suspense is built up from beginning to near finish, as the audience is allowed to digest this strange scenario in small bits, easing in from an all western film to the epic showdown at the end that lasts a good while without wearing out its welcome.

The cast was superb. Even the minor roles had me rooting in the theater. Daniel Craig was a pure bad ass cowboy all the way. Harrison Ford played a role more unique than his traditional, but at least appropriate to his age (unlike Kingdumb of the Empty Skull). A couple scenes even got me choked up.
Don’t worry about staying through to the credits (nothing to see), and thankfully Jon hates 3D so the ticket is cheaper.

For the action, nothing ever felt out of place. Unlike most alien movies, the humans beat the aliens in a more practical way than the oddball schemes that other films have done. The limits of cowboys fighting an advanced race were handled well. It never seemed silly or too farfetched the way they went about killing the “demons.”

Also, as way aliens, go, these were actually pretty well crafted monsters. Their goal for invading was somewhat simple but was reasonable enough.
As for sequels, I don’t think there should be one. It wrapped up nicely. Out of all the movies that came out this summer, I would recommend this for the movie goer.

If you can get over the title, you’ll realize this movie is far from silly.
As for my rating of the film, I prefer the pizza analogy. This movie is a perfect pizza from the best delivery, easily pleasing more people than the average “pepperoni” action flick.

9/10 For the action, comic, western, or alien movie lover.

P.S. Olivia Wilde is hot (pun intended for those who have seen the film), but this is PG-13… sorry Tea.
