When Warner Bros made the surprise announcement that Selma director Ava DuVernay would be helming an adaptation of Jack Kirby's New Gods, many were understandably perplexed. Some were also markedly upset, most notably at the fact that a New Gods film had been announced before a sequel to Man of Steel.
Reports indicate that this is due to the fact that DuVernay's film won't exist within the current DCEU of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and Shazam, the film will instead come beneath Warner Bros' currently unannounced DC banner. As for the choice of material in the first place, during a Q&A on Twitter DuVernay revealed that it was she, not Warner Bros who decided on the Kirby creation.
This is unsurprising considering that DuVernay is a self-confessed fan of the title, which bodes well for the adaptation that the A Wrinkle in Time director will craft from the ground up with screenwriter Kairo Salem. This would lead one to believe that the film is quite some time off, but in that same #AskAva Q&A, the director gave a brief update on where the pair are and how they're feeling.
What do you think? Are you excited for DuVernay's New Gods? Would you rather the studio focus on their connected DC Universe? Leave your thoughts below.
