Warner Bros. are partnering with Funko for an animated movie based on the mega-popular line of POP! vinyls.
Deadline reports that Warner Animation Group has enlisted Oscar-nominated Pixar director and designer Teddy Newton (The Incredibles, The Iron Giant) to work on the story alongside Disney Animation director Mark Dindal (The Emperor's New Groove, Chicken Little).
Said Funko CEO Brian Mariotti: “We’re thrilled for this opportunity and are committed to make an amazing Funko movie that stands on its own merit. This isn’t about selling toys or building a brand. The team at Warner Animation Group have a unique vision of what the first film should be and we are extremely excited to take this journey alongside them.”
Funko POP!s are cute collectibles based on the likeness of characters across a multitude of movies, games, comics, cartoons... you name it. From Marvel, DC, and Star Wars to far more obscure properties, if it has a fandom, chances are there's a POP! for it out there.
Of course, this being a WB project we shouldn't expect to see The Avengers or The Millennium Falcon flying around, but the studio did manage to cram a few unexpected surprises into The LEGO Movies, so you never know.
