While DC Studios is struggling to find solid footing for its cinematic universe, perhaps they'll receive a warmer reception from critics and fans alike in the documentary genre? Check out the trailer for the three-part Superpowered: The DC Story documentary below, which premieres on Max on July 20.

The documentary series will be narrated by Rosario Dawson and formatted into 3 episodes. As seen above, the documentary will include appearances from James Gunn, Jim Lee, Dwayne Johnson, Patty Jenkins, and more.  If you have a young, budding DC Comics fan at home, this documentary might be the perfect tool to showcase just how impactful the American comic book  publisher's legacy has been for the last 89 years.

EPISODE 1: THE HERO'S JOURNEY: For over 85 years, DC has been home to a universe of iconic characters and unparalleled storytelling, but its origins began with the brilliant minds who created a Super Hero trinity: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman. From survival to revival, DC navigates the birth of the sidekick, parental concerns after WWII, and a corporate takeover amid a struggle to stay current.

EPISODE 2: COMING OF AGE: During a period of declining comic book sales, a bold move resets DC's entire universe, as the company decides to also take a gamble on a new Superman movie. While rivals begin to address pressing social issues, a determined DC introduces their first Black Super Hero and breaks story boundaries under their new imprint, Vertigo Comics, with the hopes of maturing comic books into an everlasting adult art form.

EPISODE 3: A BETTER TOMORROW: Tired of being left out of the conversation, a group of diverse creators form Milestone Media to give voice to marginalized characters and stories born out of their own experiences. After more than eight decades of history, DC visionaries look toward a future that is representative of all in their ever-expanding universe.

Narrated by Rosario Dawson, Superpowered: The DC Story is co-directed by Oscar nominee Leslie Iwerks and Emmy nominee Mark Catalena; Iwerks also serves as showrunner. The docuseries features over 60 new and archival interviews with the industry’s most prolific creators, actors and executives.

The documentary is executive produced by Iwerks, Catalena, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, David Madden, Jim Lee, Doug Prinzivalli, Rachael Jerahian, Jonathan Gabay, and Adam Schlagman.

@Nightmare - They even used a shot from the Whedon version of JL at the end. Unless I'm misremembering, I think Snyder had him in the black suit, no?

@ObserverIO - ya he does his traditional reveal of the S by unbuttoning his shirt in the alley before changing into his suit, and it's a black.

Painful to see, even if it was 70 years ago.

Sounds like a garbage documentary trying to justify why they made new creative decisions that did not resonate with the audience - resulting in the decline and collapse of comics. Clearly what they were doing in the past 85 years worked well, so implying there's something wrong with the stories being told for those 85 years is incredibly insulting to the writers and creative talents who worked on the comics.

It's a good thing that we are seeing the rise of independent creators to oppose the creatively bankrupt DC and Marvel comic industry which is declining.

You made a comment not too long ago in another article's comment section that was intelligent and insightful, and this post in so different.

Keep them coming.

P.S. Forgive me for quoting your post wholesale, I just do it for posterity sake.

Forgive my questioning, but the wording of "in so different" has made it tricky to understand your comment. Were you agreeing or disagreeing with my viewpoints here?

If disagreeing, offering a counter or better emphasizing your viewpoint on why you disagree may be helpful so individuals on here can understand why you view it that way.

Personally I get the vibe this documentary is just akin to insulting the source material while propping up their alterations, claims that the source material needed to be updated, modernized, etc... are normally made by individuals who feel themselves better than the talented creators that defined the genre.
