DEADPOOL 3 Director Shawn Levy On What The Film Gained During The Hollywood Strikes

Director Shawn Levy states that the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes allowed him time to reset and reflect on what they'd already shot and what was yet to come.

On many superhero films, you always hear about how the script is constantly in flux or that there isn't really much of a script at all.

In a new interview that centered on Levy securing a Golden Globe nomination for All The Light earlier this morning, the director revealed that he was taking a congratulatory phone call while on the Deadpool 3 set in London.

Touching on that project, Levy stated that the delay caused by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA dual strikes wasn't necessarily a bad thing.

"We’re happily back at work, and now that we know it’s coming out next summer, we are working our asses off to make the best movie possible and it’s feeling good," said Levy of Deadpool 3.

He went on to add that he and Ryan Reynolds gained more, "time to get to know and think about" what they'd already shot for Deadpool 3 while on hiatus due to the strikes. "It does feel like we’re back at it freshly and more deeply informed about what this movie wants to be."

Levy also stated that he'll be working on Deadpool 3 "all the way through delivery and release" (is that a reference to The Marvels' Nia DaCosta situation) before working on the final season of Netflix's Stranger Things.

Filmmaking credits for Deadpool 3 include Levy as director and co-writer alongside Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, Zeb Wells, and Ryan Reynolds.

The film co-stars Reynolds stars as Wade Wilson / Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Also appearing are Morena Baccarin as Vanessa, Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Jennifer Garner as Elektra.

Additionally, Leslie Uggams' Blind Al will be returning along with Karan Soni as Dopinder, Stefan Kapičić as Colossus, and Shioli Kutsuna as Yukio.  Emma Corrin is set to play an undisclosed villain while  Matthew Macfadyen also has a mystery role.

Set photos have confirmed that X-Men villains Sabertooth and Toad are also slated to appear.

With Deadpool 3 seemingly set to deal with multiversal travel, unconfirmed rumors also state that the Time Variance Authority's Mobius M. Mobius played by Owen Wilson and  Miss Minutes (voiced by Tara Strong) are also set to appear, although the events of Loki season 2 now put that rumor in the "unlikely" category.

Are you excited for a third entry in the Deadpool franchise and the chance to finally see Hugh Jackman suit up in a comic-accurate costume? Or are you tired of all-things multiverse by this point? Let us know in the comment section below.

Deadpool 3 is set to hit North American theaters on July 26, 2024.

I’m looking forward to this but it seems like it’s being rushed. I’m worried that the CGI people are going to be working 20 hour shifts again and rightfully complain about it in 10 months from now. It might lower the quality of the movie with this crazy schedule.

Lol they still think they can meet their deadline, why does it matter anyways when they're only releasing one movie next year. Perhaps they learned nothing and they're so stupidly confident this will make money, that it doesn't matter if it's perfect. That'd be my guess

@bobevanz - you realize they already moved it from may to july

… probably a shit-ton more unnecessary cameos.

@santoanderson - necessary.
We've had 3 live action multiverse cbms so far and the only one that was fully successful was the one that actually embraced the fan service aspect of the multiverse (NWH).

It's a dirty little secret that multiverse movies work better when they deliver more fan service. Fans online will tell you the opposite because they want to seem clever, but they are wrong. No Wat Home was not well written or directed, but it didn't matter. It didn't matter that it didn't make sense and was full of plot holes and inconsistencies. What matter was that it delivered some perfect fan service.

(Spoilers for the three people who haven't seen it)

Aunt May's death scene and her saying the With Great Power line was stupid AF, but you know what else it was? Awesome. [frick]ing brilliant and powerful fan service. Was Andrew Garfield saving MJ necessary. I would say yes.

Rush work doesnt normally result to a good product.

They had cap 4 done shooting and they force this for next year?

Desperate Disney.

I like Levy. His work is consistent. He doesn’t make outstanding things but I like his movies for the most part.
Real Steel is underrated.

You know who I would have loved to see write a crazy wild and insanely funny Deadpool movie?
These crazy kids….

@AnthonyVonGeek - But only if the entire movie was done using puppets. And not just marionettes. We’ve seen that before. I mean ALL kinds of puppets. Marionettes, hand puppets, sock puppets, Muppets, etc. AND how about this: to differentiate which characters are from each universe, each universe’s characters are portrayed with one of the above types of puppets. So like MCU characters are marionettes, Fox-Men are sock puppets, etc. AND even stranger: DP is the only human. Huh? Waddaya think? HUH?!?

All The Light got a Golden Globe nomination? I missed that especially because of it seems critics hated it (to the point that Hugh Jackman had to lowkey hype it up on Twitter so people would give it a shot and not rule it out)

I'm sure Deadpool 3 will be fine with that said.

@NinnesMBC - The Golden Globes have long had a reputation for nominating movies and actors less for the quality of work, and more for the famous people they can have on TV during the award show. They hand out nominations like a high school kid handing out invitations to get the cool kids to come to their party.

Off-topic: HBO Max has taken off Watchmen. Another stellar decision from WBD.
