DEADPOOL 2 Director David Leitch Reveals Why He's Not Helming Marvel Studios' DEADPOOL 3

Filmmaker David Leitch is currently doing the rounds to promote his new movie, Bullet Train (you can find a roundup of reviews by clicking here). After helming John Wick, the director parted ways with Chad Stahelski and went on to take charge of movies like Atomic BlondeFast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, and Deadpool 2.

Uproxx took the opportunity to ask why Leitch isn't involved with Marvel Studios' Deadpool 3 - which has tapped Free Guy's Shawn Levy to direct - and he put it down to scheduling issues.

"It’s probably more of what I’m doing and some circumstance. I love all of those worlds, and they’re all precious to me," he explained. "Starting with John Wick. Chad has taken over that franchise and executed it beautifully. And Deadpool is amazing. And Atomic Blonde, I would love to go back."

"When I look back, I would love to go back to those worlds, but I think the way it’s worked out for me, or fate has brought me to this place, is that I get new opportunities and they’re really awesome, interesting, as well."

"Look, we had conversations about Deadpool 3, but I just was...I had things in the pipeline, too. And it was never, 'Hey, do you want to do it or not want to do it?' or whatever," Leitch continued. "I think it was more we knew our dance cards were kind of full on both sides. And we have a window. And Marvel has calendars."

Deadpool 2 wasn't quite as warmly received as its predecessor, but received positive reviews and was a box office hit. Bringing Leitch back likely would have been welcomed by fans, but a fresh start also makes sense now the Merc with the Mouth is joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ryan Reynolds clearly enjoyed working with Levy on Free Guy, and that movie was a hit in theaters and on Disney+. Needless to say, Marvel Studios has to be hoping they can recapture that same magic for what looks set to be the first R-Rated MCU movie.

Deadpool 3 doesn't currently have a release date.

I actually liked Deadpool 2. But couldn't it be that Marvel Studios simply didn't ask him to return?

@GirshwinDavies

And Shawn Levy is a better choice? 😐

@regularmovieguy - I think they’ve both got their strengths but Shawn Levy did just make Disney a bunch of money with Free Guy.

@Waddles

Deadpool 2 being a disappointment is greatly overstated on this website. Audience, critical reception and box office was pretty in line with the first movie by most metrics (cinemascore, RT, MT, etc.). 800 mil on a 90 mil budget is a massive success.

It’s debatable how much Leitch contributed to that but it was his movie.

@regularmovieguy - Whoever was the deciding vote on what they did with Colossus in DP2 deserves a firm kick in the crotch section.

Haha, you’re spot on with the hyperbole. And I don’t think it’s impossible for anyone to “hate” this movie - I’m sure plenty of people do. These movies live and die on how funny you think they are - if you don’t think it’s funny you’re probably not going to like it.

I just don’t think there’s really that much of a quality hike between this one and the first movie that people seem to think there is.

I could’ve done without CGI Juggernaut, lol.

@regularmovieguy - I like them both lol. I wasn’t saying that I didn’t like Leich. Just that the studio didn’t ask for him to return 👍

Because "scheduling issues" sounds much nicer than "they didn't want me back".

Shawn Levy is a better director 😐

I don’t think Leitch is amazing or anything but Shawn Levy ain’t exactly a step up. I thought Free Guy was awful.

DP2 sucked but I think that was more Reynolds fault and being heavy until the script

@GhostDog - DP2 sucked because of the script and that australian kid. Also, the CGI was terrible.

MosquitoFarmer

@GhostDog - As with far too many comedy sequels, they got too cocksure about what worked in the first and then proceed to overdo it in the sequel. It had some great stuff for sure, but a lot of dud moments too.

No biggie to me. I enjoyed the sequel, but Deadpool was much better IMO.

I actually think I slight prefer 2 to 1 but they’reboth fantastic and I’m excited for 3.
CaptainDC

While I still prefer Deadpool 1, Deadpool 2 was definitely still a fun ride.

I think the case here is more that they wanted a different direction. Ryan Reynolds is extremely close with Shawn Levy after pairing with him on Free Guy and The Adam Project recently. They probably wanted to keep that going.
