It's been six years since Deadpool 2 was released in theaters and a lot has changed since then. For starters, Disney merged with 20th Century Fox, giving Marvel Studios exclusive rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises.
Mutants and the X-Men have slowly started making their way into MCU movies and TV shows, while The Fantastic Four will finally hit the big screen next year.
Back to 2024, though, and Deadpool & Wolverine is set to bring its title characters into the MCU via an unexpected meeting with the Time Variance Authority. While not confirmed in any way, we expect the movie to end with both Wade Wilson and Logan stranded on Earth-616 in anticipation of the upcoming Avengers movies.
Now, with roughly five weeks to go before Deadpool & Wolverine claws its way into multiplexes across the globe, star, writer, and producer Ryan Reynolds has confirmed post-production is done and work on the threequel has been completed.
"And that's all she wrote for post-production," Reynolds wrote on Instagram. "Feels like a million years of work went by in a blink. Sitting next to this guy [director Shawn Levy] made it all so sweet...hard to walk away."
Marvel Studios movies sometimes aren't finished until days before they're playing in theaters. However, with a massive global press tour set to begin later this month/early July, it was likely necessary to make sure Deadpool & Wolverine wrapped in time. This also suggests Levy was given the space needed to deliver the movie he wanted.
While Reynolds acknowledges that it's a project "hard to walk away" from, chances are what's looking like a record-breaking box office run for the movie will almost certainly mean this isn't the last time the Merc with the Mouth shares the screen with Wolverine...
Shawn Levy directs Deadpool & Wolverine, which stars Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Emma Corrin, Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, and Matthew Macfadyen. The movie is written by Ryan Reynolds & Rhett Reese & Paul Wernick & Zeb Wells & Shawn Levy.
The trades have confirmed that Jennifer Garner will reprise her role as Elektra, with Wesley Snipes, James Marsden, Famke Janssen, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Dafne Keen, Channing Tatum, Blake Lively and even singer Taylor Swift among those rumoured to make an appearance.
Kevin Feige, Reynolds, Levy and Lauren Shuler Donner produce with Louis D’Esposito, Wendy Jacobson, Mary McLaglen, Josh McLaglen, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, George Dewey, Simon Kinberg and Jonathon Komack Martin serving as executive producers.
Deadpool & Wolverine arrives in theaters on July 26.
