DEADPOOL 3: Everything You Need To Know About The Merc With The Mouth's MCU WOLVERINE Team-Up

Deadpool 3 now has a confirmed release date and another lead in Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, but what do you need to know about the Merc with the Mouth's MCU debut? We have you covered with an in-depth guide!

Features Opinion

Deadpool 3 has been in the works at Marvel Studios for the past few years now, but it wasn't until yesterday that it was finally dated for September 6, 2024.

As big as this news was, it was nothing compared to the reveal that Hugh Jackman is reprising the role of Wolverine one last time for the Deadpool team-up we've all been waiting for. That's massive, and most fans are already losing their minds about what this could mean for both the MCU and these characters.

Will they be friends? Will they be enemies? Will they fight? Will they f***?! The latter is no doubt off the table even in an R-Rated adventure (thankfully...), but we now have a roundup of all the biggest details you need to know about Deadpool and Wolverine's first proper big screen adventure.

Find out more about what to expect from Deadpool 3 by hitting that all-important NEXT button.

7. It Won't Contradict Logan

While fans responded positively to the news that Jackman is finally giving into Reynolds' demands to join him on screen as Wolverine, there were those who have expressed some concerns. 2017's Logan has been hailed as a masterpiece and the perfect end to the actor's tenure as the clawed mutant.

In a newly released video, the two actors have assured fans that Deadpool 3 won't contradict that film in any way. It takes place before the threequel and won't undo the emotional conclusion to Logan's story.

If Deadpool 3 is set immediately after the events of Deadpool 2 (and Reynolds wearing his tattered costume in the teaser suggests that might be the case), then the threequel takes place in 2017. If it's in the present day, then it will still be half a decade before Profesor X lost control and killed his X-Men.

6. The Movie's Creative Team

It was in late 2017 that Disney announced plans to acquire 20th Century Fox and that halted whatever the studio had planned not just for Deadpool 3, but the wider X-Men series. Over the next couple of years, we'd learn that the character would join the MCU, whereas the X-Men and Fantastic Four franchises were set to be rebooted.

Initially, Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin were tapped to pen the film's screenplay. Something changed, however, as Free Guy director Shawn Levy being hired as director also heralded the return of Deadpool and Deadpool 2 scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Now, they're hard at work on the threequel and we're assuming Reynolds is also contributing to the script. It's a solid team, and even though the departure of the Molyneux sisters raises some questions, we can't wait to see what they come up with.

5. Some Characters Will Return...

As of right now, only Reynolds and Jackman are Deadpool 3's confirmed cast members. Zazie Beetz has strongly hinted that she'll be back as Domino, while a fan who met Colossus actor Stefan Kapičić at a convention claims he told them that he''ll be part of the threequel as well.

An exchange between Reynolds and Leslie Uggams on social media has all but confirmed her return as Blind Al, which is sure to be welcomed by fans of that hilariously bizarre dynamic. As for Morena Baccarin, it was only weeks ago that she shared hopes to return as Vanessa after being saved by the Merc with the Mouth in the film's post-credits scene.

What about Josh Brolin's Cable? We hope to see him back, though comments from the actor suggest he didn't enjoy that Marvel experience as much as his Marvel Studios one. Now they're in charge, though, we could see the time-traveller again.

4. ...While Others Won't

The Deadpool movies always played a little fast and loose with continuity and the character's place in the X-Men Universe. The sequel confirmed his adventures take place in that reality when he paid a visit to the X-Mansion, though James McAvoy and his team's cameo was a tad contradictory in and of itself.

X-Men: Apocalypse took place in the 80s and Dark Phoenix moved the action to the 90s. Deadpool 2, meanwhile, was set in the present day, so those actors being there was a tad confounding.

We don't expect to see those X-Men again, but would be surprised if Feige doesn't find a way to bring back some of the other actors he worked with on those early films. As for someone who definitely won't return, TJ Miller is almost certainly out as Weasel after various #MeToo allegations.

3. It's Keeping The R-Rating

Former Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed early on that the Deadpool franchise would remain R-Rated, a shock when the MCU has, thus far, been family-friendly. We've seen Marvel Studios push the boundaries now and again, but a movie set in this world with that's surprising, to say the least.

Disney is clearly aware that Deadpool and Deadpool 2's adult offerings played a big part in their respective box office success and that watering Wade Wilson down would not end well. That's good news for fans, though there are still some concerns that this will alienate the character from the wider MCU.

Still, Feige has since reiterated that Deadpool 3 will retain its R-Rating, adding that "It's very fun to be in the world of the Ryan Reynolds show." We're sure Disney can throw in some bleeps when Wade does inevitably cross paths with The Avengers.

2. Road Trip!

Promoting a mental health awareness campaign last year, Reynolds revealed on social media that the original plan for Deadpool 3 at 20th Century Fox had been for Wade and Logan to head off on a road trip "Rashomon style."

For those of you unfamiliar with that term, it refers to a story where the same event is recounted by several characters, and the stories differ in ways that are impossible to reconcile. We have to believe at least some of that has been carried over into this version of the threequel, though Marvel Studios will likely increase the budget and up the ante.

It makes no sense in the long run for Deadpool to remain in his own reality, so by the time all is said and done, he'll likely find his way into the MCU. Perhaps this road trip will become a Multiversal journey, giving both characters the opportunity to interact with MCU stalwarts (Hulk vs. Wolverine, anyone?).

1. Which World Is The Movie Set In?

Picking up from our last point, this is a question on everyone's lips right now. On the one hand, Marvel Studios could decide to keep the X-Men Universe alive, leaving Deadpool up to his own devices very much the same way he was when Fox was still making Marvel movies.

That would be an awful missed opportunity, especially when a big part of the appeal with Deadpool 3 is seeing the Merc with the Mouth cross paths with the MCU's heroes and villains. The same applies to Wolverine, of course, so we have to believe that Marvel Studios will use this opportunity to take full advantage of the Multiverse concept.

Wade has already screwed around with time travel, so this leading to him and Logan being thrust through the Multiverse and into the MCU seems like the logical place to take their team up. Only time will tell whether that happens, of course.
