How Will Ryan Reynolds' DEADPOOL Fit Into The Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Disney and Fox changed the movie world with their recent deal, as now the X-Men and Fantastic Four can join the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, one character will be a bit harder to bring into the MCU.

Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox last month shook up the landscape of the film industry and has left us with a lot of questions about how Marvel Studios might be planning on integrating Fox’s superheroes into the MCU. Since the X-Men franchise has been chugging along for 18 years now, integrating this current core of mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe would be pretty jarring.

However, if the studio doesn’t want to reboot the whole thing, they can always use some kind of comic book nonsense to explain the integration. Doctor Strange could open a portal to a parallel universe or something along those lines. In a universe that features talking raccoons and sorcerers, this isn’t really a stretch.

While bringing in the X-Men would require the filmmakers to work a bit of an explanation into the story, there is one Fox-owned Marvel character that would be able to explain it himself: Deadpool. This would be a bit of a gamble since while the first Deadpool film was a big hit, its R-rating kept a lot of the younger kids who tend to watch Marvel movies away.

It would be pretty amazing to see Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool show up out of the blue in a Spider-Man movie, but there are some hurdles in the way of that actually happening. While the ten-year-old kid demographic probably isn’t going to complain about the continuity errors this would bring up, they might be curious about this character whose movies they aren’t allowed to watch. This raises a pretty big question: will Marvel be able to bring Deadpool into the MCU without watering him down?

Disney CEO Bob Iger has previously said the studio will be able to figure out a way to keep Deadpool an R-Rated character, but this will be much easier to do when dealing with his solo movies. Bringing him into PG-rated MCU films will be a bit more challenging. It’s been suggested before that Deadpool could still be his crass self in a more family-friendly way—all it would take is for the film editors to bleep out his swear words. Deadpool could even complain about this censorship in the movie. This would be a pretty funny, and definitely meta, way of fitting the Merc with a Mouth into the MCU.

However, Marvel Studios might not be willing to fully embrace the absurdity of Deadpool in films that feature their more conventional characters. Introducing a fourth-wall-breaking, ultra-violent antihero isn’t exactly in keeping with the MCU formula. While I think the prospect of seeing Deadpool riff off of characters like Thor and Captain America is too good to pass up, having a character this crazy cross paths with the Avengers might be a bit too weird for the average moviegoer.

This leads me to a possible compromise. One way to avoid the risk of alienating Avengers fans who aren’t crazy about Deadpool would be to have some Avengers cameo in Deadpool movies, not the other way around. This would still let us see Wade Wilson make fun of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes without completely changing the tone of the Avengers movies. As far as the continuity goes, the Deadpool movies could be presented as stand-alone films, and I’m sure Kevin Feige could figure out a way to do this.

What’s your idea for bringing Deadpool into the MCU? Sound off below?

@dethpillow - They should literally just start a movie with him being sucked into a portal into the MCU lol

@Kevwebsz - That would be sweet. It could be full of all the disney characters and franchises flashing past him with a bunch of lawyers and suits mixed in. Maybe George Lucas sitting at a lonely little desk next to Yoda saying "What the FU#% just happened?"

Its possible they can open up another Marvel Studio for more R rated stuff. Like Marvel MAX studios based on the MAX comics (which would bring back the Marvel Neflix being put on the big screen talks). Idk but when the freaking DISNEY CEO says they're keeping him R then theres not much to worry about here.

I like the concept of Deadpool just looking insane to the other heroes when he’s in their films... he starts making quips directly to the 4th wall, but then the camera changes and shows him talking to thin air while the other heroes just exchange glances.

I would just combine the Netflix shows with him and have him due a flashback scene with him bumping into Spidey on the train, Thor or Widow on the streets etc. etc. to make it all official confirming they're all part of the same universe

Make Deadpool the new Stan Lee and put him in every Marvel film.

Not a reboot but something that would bring fresh faces to all the roles.

Deadpool will be another Kick-Ass. After the sequel people will not care about it very much. The joke can only be stretched so thin.

@ManDeth - I do wonder about that possibility. Comedy sequels are very tricky to pull off. Kingsmen 2 was something of a disappointment from what I heard, as well.

Why do people assume that because Deadpool is rated R that no one under the age of 18 has seen it?

My guess is Deadpool will just make himself fit. Which, I mean, who wouldn't be ok if he just forced himself in there. Breathe deep MCU.

Now that Disney effectively owns Deadpool how weird would it be if Cable went up against Thanos considering that they’re both played by Josh Brolin? 😄

I don’t think it would be too much of a stretch to have Deadpool go so far as to censor himself. Picture this scenario: Deadpool/Spider-Man team-up movie, our lovely heroes are up aganst the villain (doesn’t matter who). Villain goes into cliche monologue; whenever the villain curses, Deadpool screams out, “Hey, watch your language!” Then turns directly to the audience and says, “There are children present!” before turning back to the action like nothing happened.

I think fantastic four and the core x-men are the only ones who will be introduced in the mcu. All the spin-offs from the x-men movies will remain in that universe I think, that includes deadpool
Ace006
Ace006 - 1/4/2018, 1:13 AM
what worries me about deadpool in the mcu is that it's not going to be a 'Deadpool' movie but more 'Deadpool and Friends' which is what i'm worried about the sequel as well with cable and i hope they don't go full Daniel Way on that with their story

Just make him have Stan Lee-esque cameos but make some super blunt and some very subtle/hidden. Like have him randomly walking down the street for like 2 seconds and no one ever acknowledge it except for fans

I’ve been waiting to make this refrence

Amazing! Everything this article says is wrong

Because of the character intergrating ryans deadpool will be totally easy they’d just censor him and have him freak accept in his own movies where he can be let loose and these will be under the r label iger mentioned which they can even have deadpool explain

As far as we know, outside Deadpools fourth wall breaks (whihc I wouldn't consider canon) there is little to no direct links to the Fox main series. Furthermore it is set in a vaguely modern imperious

Therefore I think that makes it really easy for Deadpool to be retconned into the the MCU (post the "mutants reveal").

The benefits are that they keep characters like Colousus (who I perfection both in personality and design: it be stupid to attempt to reboot him ), Negasonic, cable an dominion (who both look like they will be great).

I actually feel the only direct links to the Fox universe are that its the same school building and the Black Bird Jet. I would say they could easily wipe them out by having the school explode (as Negasonic says it does frequently) allowing them to "in universe" reboot the schools visual look.

Deadpool only needs to interact occasionally with the MCU cast in a PG-13 movie here or there.
I love the idea of him actually being bleeped overtime he swears and he notices it and goes off on a bleep infested rant for about 30 seconds. I would have Steve Rogers come into the scene and use his classic "Language.." and walk away disgusted only to have Deadpool flip him off when Rogers back is to him.

I'm almost certain Deadpool 2 will hint at what to expect. Perhaps even a post credit scene with an MCU cameo.

They can do something similar to a DC Comics crisis event or the DC/Marvel Amalgam event, where the two universes are merged together. Then Maybe Deadpool decides he doesn't like the new universe and so goes universe hopping or maybe just gets annoyed at the changes as he is one of only a few who have even noticed the merge.
