Jake Gyllenhaal Believes Ryan Reynolds Should Have Been Nominated For An Academy Award For DEADPOOL
When asked what he considered to be an Oscar snub, Jake Gyllenhaal mentioned his Life costar Ryan Reynolds as someone he believes should have been nominated for Best Actor for his work in Deadpool.
After getting a lot of attention from several major industry guilds, fans were hopeful that Tim Miller's Deadpool might get some love at The Academy Awards this year, but unfortunately the movie failed to pick up any nominations - not even for Best Adapted Screenplay, which many felt was a no brainer.
Though most hopes were pinned on a very slim shot at Best Picture, one actor believes the focus should have been placed on Ryan Reynolds' lead performance as The Merc with a Mouth.
When asked if he believed there were any snubs this year during an interview with EW, Jake Gyllenhaal (Nocturnal Animals) was full of praise for Reynolds' work in the film.
"We talk about brilliant performances all the time, you know, the actors who tear themselves apart for their roles, which I’m a believer in. But then I look at Ryan Reynolds in ‘Deadpool’ and I say, ‘No one can do that but him.’ That is truly, purely him. As an artist he struggled for several years to figure that out and it’s all there on the screen. And it’s brilliant. Sure it’s a comic book movie and it’s made a lot of money — but that doesn’t subtract from Ryan’s extraordinary work. Because it’s him. I mean, let’s ask ourselves: What else do we want from people who create? Something that is truly them.”
Do you guys agree with Gyllenhaal's appraisal of Reynolds' performance? Both actors will appear together in Daniel Espinosa new sci-fi flick, Life, which is set to hit theaters on March 24.
