Rob Liefield On Deadpools Movie Treatment

Rob Liefield On Deadpools Movie Treatment

Rob Liefield may not be the most popular comic artist/writer in the world, but he did co-create a hell of a popular character with Deadpool. Find out here what he thought about his X Men Origins: Wolverine big screen debut..

What was the Image Comics co-founder's reaction to Deadpool’s first appearance on the big screen...

“I have a scale, with worst possible interpretation of a character being Halle Berry as Catwoman, to best possible interpretation of a character being Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, Ron Perlman as Hellboy, Patrick Stewart as Professor X, or Christian Bale as Batman,” Liefeld told MTV News. “I would put Deadpool, in this inception, much closer to the side where they got it right.”

Liefeld praised the movie’s version of Deadpool as being true to his initial vision for the wisecracking mercenary — and explained why the character audiences saw at the end of the film isn’t actually that far off.

“When I created Deadpool, the entire backstory that was pitched was that he was the junk left over from a bad Weapon X experiment,” Liefeld explained. “When I look at the film, there’s no reason he can’t go and become that guy I created.”

However, that’s not to say that director Gavin Hood and the film’s writers got off without any criticism from Liefeld.

“Look, katanas coming out of the hand? Not a fan. But you get over it,” he admitted. “Do I believe Deadpool will be shooting optic blasts out of his eyes down the road? No, I don’t believe he will.”

So there you go fanboys, if the damn creator of the character can get over his movie treatment maybe you can too..someday, just take it slowly!;)

He must be getting paid off of the film Wolverine due to being a co-creator of Deadpool and since Marvel officially greenlit a stand alone Deadpool movie too he has to be happy, for this brings more money toward him. Otherwise I don't think he would be so pleased with what Fox did to Wade Wilson. He will keep his true feelings to himself and get that money in these tough economic times. Smart man!

TheStranger - 5/13/2009, 7:26 PM
No doubt they will still complain. They always have even though they didnt have much of a case at all. The only people that are honestly complaining anyway are those who really dont know X-men well enough to make a call anyway.

Why would he get any money for the character?! Its marvel's character and property...not his.

Deathlok - 5/13/2009, 7:38 PM
Yeah, I will still complain.

Liefield - “When I look at the film, there’s no reason he can’t go and become that guy I created.”

I assume he's saying the thing in the movie at the end is not what he created, but there's a chance for it later.

Liefield - "...he was the junk left over from a bad Weapon X experiment.”

Obviously in the movie he wasn't the junk left over. He was the pinnacle of what Stryker was trying to achieve.

The guy just confirmed everything people are complaining about. The fact that he's not fuming about it doesn't suprise me in the slightest. He created the character so he really doesn't have anything to prove.

Ah a perfect example! Yknow quagmire i have seen you post countless times on this site and its always negative, because you FANBOYS are NEVER happy! You must hate every comic book movie ever made because they ALL took liberties in some way. Just get the [frick] over it! They are adaptations, they have to change things. Im not saying Wolverine was a great movie by any means but Barrakapool was not what stopped it from being great. You liked TDk huh? So all the deviations from the comics in that didnt bother you then?

Leee we are all fanboys in some ways, its just the ones that complain constantly about every detail that [frick] me right off. Im not even saying what they did to Deadpool wasnt a massive liberty, it was, but its not what made the movie a let down..it was the script and cliched plot.

TheNameIsBetty - 5/13/2009, 8:26 PM
Wow. I fully agree Rorschach. The whole analytical attitude of these frickin' people ticks me off too.

But, forgive me...i'm a benedict arnold, i liked Wolverine. Ok (*gulp) shoot me now! lol
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 5/13/2009, 8:39 PM
I liked Wolverine myself, it just should have been a lot better. But Jackman and Schreiber were class in it...oh but Creed didnt have big hair, i guess he sucked huh quagmire? By script i mean the spoken dialogue. If they hadnt of relied so much on cliches and developed the characters more..particularly Silver Fox, it would have been a much better movie..end of level boss and all!

And im not attacking anyone, im just saying the incessant bellyaching is annoying..also, i know even if Wolverine had been a great movie in every other way, you would still have hated it soley because of Deadpool.

How did Watchmen work out for you in the end?
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 5/13/2009, 8:40 PM
Yeah RORSCH @ i know man, i think alot to do with WOLVERINE was, everyone wanted a Dark Knight an it was a Howard the Duck!!!(Personally WATCHMENS better) With all the millions FOX had it should've been better, alot better!!! All the hype an then a big let down! Yeah details, im not to bothered with that but keep to the basis of the characters atleast! An geez RORSCH @ its gotta be late where you are dude!!! Well lets all hope for a excellent WOLVERINE 2, DEADPOOL and GAMBIT!!! ; )

LEEE777
LEEE777 - 5/13/2009, 8:58 PM
GUNSMITH @ it'll be PG-13 dude, WOLVERINE should've been an R too! Trust me, the amount that made, every studio with the rights to any superheroes will now make watered down lame sad versions of great characters, well till they all start bombing that is! Sad but true man. Its gonna be the dark age of comic book movies, you heard it here first lol! ; )
Betty
Betty - 5/13/2009, 9:19 PM
Oh it'll be pg13 all right. You can have as much killing as you want as long as there's no blood spray.

Luckily, all of my knowledge of Deadpool is from around when he was first introduced so i can have a blank slate about this one. But seriously when he was introduced, he was the merc with the mouth, that was it. No healing factor. No back story. No nothin. Like the show LOST, they write 'em as they go.

Doesnt his head turn 360 on a regular basis? Like his head has been cut off before?

You can complain all you want you 'non-fans' or 'mistake-accepters' but us fan boys want something that doesn't completely alter a character's personality in such a way that you can't even recognize who they are. Either way I will not see some character from Mortal Kombat play Deadpool again.
Betty
Betty - 5/13/2009, 10:28 PM
THey wrote the end of wolverine to make more sense when Deadpool comes out. You wait! You'll see! All you guys'll be like, "Oh damn, dey geniusessss. We wuh so mad at yous!" And i'll be all, "See dere!" and you be, "yous was right" and i'll be all, "Uh huh." ya'll be, "Betty yous a dad blame Genius!"

musicsuperhero--if you cant say something nice, dont say anything at all. If we all screamed and cussed, they'd never have a conversation on the smallvile posts.

Just got back from Star Trek with my girl annd woo hoo she loved it too! that movie was great! She wanted to see Wolverine as well so we snuck in and she gave me this look like i had wasted her time and two years of my life looking forward to it. Just the basic questions she had about why was this and that so dumb or didnt make sense. DeadPudu was a complete waste and sooooo stupid. Just the way his blades were waaaay to long for his forearms and the fact his head shot lasers on a almost perfect level as it spun in circles down the shaft. Oh my god. I have alwyas hated Liefelds drwings (no hands or feet) but now i just think he is a sell out little bit@# !

first time poster here so dont be too harsh on me. what i dont understand is the constant fights on here all the time about the fanboys vs the....what? everybody on this site is a fanboy of something. normal people dont spend their time reading this stuff. by normal im sure you all know what i mean. we are all fanboys period. i personally have not seen wolverine yet cause i have too many bills and dont make enough money but from viewing damn near every other comic book movie ever made so far i will say this. liberties are fine, re writing origins are fine and changing the look of characters is fine if and only if, the story and the acting are good. why do we need to spend our hard earned money going to see a movie if its 100% accurate to a story we all know by heart. where is the fun in that? obviously tdk was a fantastic movie and possibly the best comic movie ever but think about it. even if batman wasnt in it it still would have been a great movie because of the story and the acting. honestly there really wasnt anything in that story that is exclusive to batman except names. on the opposite end you have my personal most hated hulk. horrible movie to go see. i love the hulk and i actually fell asleep in the theater. bad acting and a horrible story that didnt even really make sense. also a very artsy take that didnt help either. point is: great story, great acting = great movie regardless of the attention to detail.

LEEE777 - Don't slam the duck! He is part of my childhood! lol

Wolverine was never going to be a TDK but I was at least hoping for an Ironman. I liked the film but yes it could have been better.

These "purists" are just narrow minded and in most cases hypocritical. How can you be against Schreiber as sabertooth when he portrays the character so well just because hes a foot too short but love Hugh as Wolverine because he portrays the character so well but is a foot too tall?

its still gonna take a helluva lot of work to get Deadpool back to normal...they should make Weapon XI a clone otherwise its gonna be too complicated portraying the whole cancer scars etc when he already has the scars from Origins-retcon time!
longbowhunter
longbowhunter - 5/14/2009, 6:49 AM
Ya know if they dont make Weapon XI a clone, they should make Deadpool's body reject the powers and the katanas. I would be okay with that.

comicb00kguy
comicb00kguy - 5/14/2009, 7:32 AM
Why has "fanboy" become such a negative term? By its original definition, everyone here is a "fanboy" to some extent. What annoys me most is the term being used as a slur against anyone who complains about a comic movie really screwing up a character in one way or another. I blame Wizard for this. So we're supposed to just sit like drooling idiots and watch some incompetent director or screenwriter who has zero understanding of what makes a comic character interesting assrape our favorite characters and say nothing? To hell with that! I can see getting on the nitpickers, who microanalyze everything looking for any tiny thing to complain about. People with larger and far more legitimate gripes about things don't deserve such derision, especially when they offer REASONS for their gripes, not just saying "this sucks".

Anyway, it's good to be reminded that Liefeld, for his many sins, did create a character as likable and interesting as Deadpool.

These arguments just go round and round with the same people making the same points over & over just on a new news story every day. But Rorshach01 is right - if Liefield says he's closer to The Dark Knight as far as treatment than Catwoman you need to quit your bitching. How can your opinion be more important than his? lol

Well i can see most of ya can see how WOLVIE was, (lets be nice) a good B movie at best!!! Yeehawww!!! ; D

People like (i wont say no names lol) sheep, that think ohhhhh just because ROB there says it was okay makes it right???? Lmfao!!! The guy would sell his own granma, look im not having a go at ROB, X-FORCE was sweet but he ain't exactly gonna say anything bad about it, just like the rest!!! Think about it!!! ; )

Fans that thought WOLVERINE was great have a nasty wake up call!!! Theres going to be more, an most will bomb!!! WOLVERINE has just green lit alot of Superhero crap to come!

By the way, they only did that DEADPOOL ending, because of the bad response to WEAPON CRAP that it will end up being a clone, though it was originally DEADPOOL!! Still i suppose that good news lol! : D
longbowhunter
longbowhunter - 5/14/2009, 8:00 AM
I can't repect anything Liefield says, even if it is supposed to be positive. Also I dont think alot of creators have as much knowledge as fans. I doubt Rob has read any Deadpool stories outside his own! Fact, the fans have!
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 5/14/2009, 8:15 AM
Bottom line is,,, they shouldn't of messed with DEADPOOL period! An i know ive said it before but come onnnnn!!! That WEAPON whatever his name is could've been thought up by a 5 year old in his break time at pre-school! Very sad, an it says something when still people are trying to defend WOLVERINE???

INCREDIBLE HULK was much better!!! ; )

HOWLETT @ Ive said on many posts Schreiber as SABERTOOTH was great, so is Jackman as WOLVERINE!!! They was perfect for the parts!!! Them being brothers was stupid, an also the rest, but mainly the plot and special effects!!! How can anyone think this was a good comic book movie??

For a movie you wait a year or so for and then go an see and spend 10 bucks for, with all the hype and stuff, with all the Millions put in it, it should be Awesome!!! ? But hence it was just a big budget Days of our Lives soap movie! ; )

An your right @ Longbowhunter @ Plus ROB would bend over for a quarter lol!

How's WOLVERINE doing now by the way at the Box office???

SHIBAZZ/BETTY @ Heh heh heh!!! : D

BLACKWINGS17
BLACKWINGS17 - 5/14/2009, 8:36 AM
I'm really sick and tired of all of these people claiming to be "true" fans just because they'll eat up anything that carries the X-Logo. The rest of us "fanboys" just really want to see the characters that we've grown up with and love be given the justice they deserve.

1. Most of us loved the actors who played the characters - I thought they all were a near perfect fit. Ryan Reynolds IS Deadpool, Will IS Kestrel, Hugh Jackman IS Wolverine, and Liev Schreiber made a good Sabretooth. Kevin Durand even made me like Blob.

2. We hate the bad special effects - this is 2009, not 1999. For having millions upon millions of dollars to play with, we sure as hell expect a little more. Wolverine and his claws in the bathroom - They just cut and pasted some claws on that scene and didn't even bother trying to blend them in. Or the escaped mutants running towards a helicopter on a giant flat screen. Really?

3. Why would Rob Liefield bad-mouth a company that is making it possible for his characters to be on the big screen? So even if he had complaints, he isn't gonna voice them.

4. The greatest problem we had with it was Deadpool's powers. Obviously he is not gonna have the costume, because he isn't Deadpool yet, so why would many of us complain about that? Ryan Reynolds is the perfect Wade Wilson, so why would many of us complain about that? So I find it hilarious that so many of you people say we don't have a case and that we are not true fans - yet the greatest (and for many of us, the only) complaint we have just happens to be the only complaint Rob Liefield had with the interpretation of the character - the blades comin' out of his hands and shooting optic blast out of his eyes.

5. Last but not least - No, we do not assume or expect every movie to be the next Dark Knight, so stop using this pathetic argument just because so many of you can't allow a movie to stand on its own. The people who compare every comic movie to the Dark Knight are the same people who claim every movie involving robots is a Transformers knock-off, or every movie involving wizards is a Lord Of The Rings wanna-be. Every comic movie is its own thing.

6. LEEE777 and SirJediFrank - I agree!
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 5/14/2009, 9:10 AM
BLACKWINGS17 @ I 100% agree with you man too on your whole post!!!

People should wake up an see WOLVERINE for what it is, because if they accept movies like this (an yeah it looks like it was made in the 90's lol) We will get a overflow of crap like this, an it will spell the end of the comic book movie!!!

I'd rather Quality than Quantity! ; )
