During production of Deadpool, we got to see a ton of set photos featuring Ryan Reynolds fully suited up as the fan-favourite character. The costume is 100% practical, though whether or not the eyes of the mask will end up being CGI so he can emote remains to be seen. Regardless, during a recent interview with Screen Rant, the actor was quick to talk about why he's so much happier to be wearing an actual costume this time around (the second time he's playing a superhero).
Asked which he preferred between Green Lantern and the Merc with the Mouth, he told the site:
"Oh, ‘Deadpool,’ you can’t even compare – I mean, it’s brutal doing a film where you’re wearing a motion capture suit for the whole time. Just as an actor it’s brutal, but like – a lot of people relate to [Deadpool] because he has cancer. So we worked a lot with the Make a Wish Foundation and those kids would come on set, and I loved hosting them. Because when I’d walk out in that suit, you’d watch their minds explode, and that felt amazing. And that’s something I never really got to experience before because there was no Green Lantern suit. I didn’t even get to see the Green Lantern suit until the first trailer. I never even knew what it looked like. So [‘Deadpool’] was a pretty great experience. I love having the tactile, real deal, all the time."
When the Green Lantern costume first debuted, it was widely ridiculed, especially as the CGI in that first trailer wasn't really all that great. Despite that, it's not hard to see where Reynolds is coming from here (though here's hoping that Warner Bros. don't go down the special effects route for the next Hal Jordan's Green Lantern suit).
