Cruella stars Academy Award winner Emma Stone (La La Land) in Disney's all-new live-action feature film about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious - and notoriously fashionable - villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. The movie arrives in theaters and on Disney+'s Premier Access service on Friday, May 28, and believe us when we say it's an absolute must-see!
The movie also stars Emma Thompson as The Baroness, a formidable and powerful woman who proves to be a crucial part of Estella's transformation into Cruella de Vil. Both Stone and Thompson - who are incredible on screen together - took part in the global press conference for Cruella earlier this month, and the Harry Potter star was kind enough to answer a question submitted by yours truly.
Here's what both Emmas had to say when Thompson was asked what it was like to revisit 1970s England in the movie, and what about the sets ended up transporting her back to that time.
Emma Thompson: Well, it was like being a teenager again, because I was born in 1959, for crying out loud. And London...
Emma Stone: She's just set a Guinness World Record. That's the earliest someone was ever born, Thomps. 1959? My God.
Emma Thompson: [Laughs] It was quite a long time ago. In the 1970s, I was in my early teens and for me, especially in the London streets, it was surreal, because I had actually worn some of those clothes. I think some of the supporting artists were in my old gear. I mean, we were all in afghan coats and and clogs and smocks and cheesecloth and maxi skirts and wet look boots, and all this stuff.
It was very touching actually, because the red London buses are very different now. They look different now. But when I was a little girl, they were like that. They looked exactly the same. It was the same bus number that brought me into town from where I lived, which is where I still live because I'm weird. It was the same bus, the 159, and it was this little hop on, hop off bus. So when I saw the bus that Emily gets on when she jumps on from the store where she's just been, it just was like being little again and being a teenager going into London to maybe buy myself a top, you know, which would have cost maybe 50p or something, because we'd only just gone decimal. I mean, it's the dark ages, but everything was quite brown. Brown was very popular.
Emma Stone: Brown. And avocado.
Emma Thompson: Yeah, they loved a lot of different kinds of beige. It was an extraordinary experience. And the designer, Fiona Crombie, she's so brilliant.
As you can probably tell, there's a tonne of chemistry between Stone and Thompson, and you'll definitely be surprised by what both women bring to their respective characters in Cruella.
