As the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus) continues to result in event cancellations and film release date delays, Disneyland has announced that its California theme park will close starting March 14 through the end of the month

Disneyland Resort hotels will remain open until March 16 so guests can make necessary travel accommodations.

This is only the fourth time in history that this park has fully suspended operations. The other instances were the Sept. 11 attacks, the morning after JFK’s assassination and the Northridge earthquake. It’s unclear if Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla., will remain open.

“While there have been no reported cases of COVID-19 at Disneyland Resort, after carefully reviewing the guidelines of the Governor of California’s executive order and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure, beginning the morning of March 14 through the end of the month.

The Hotels of Disneyland Resort will remain open until Monday, March 16 to give guests the ability to make necessary travel arrangements; Downtown Disney will remain open. We will monitor the ongoing situation and follow the advice and guidance of federal and state officials and health agencies. Disney will continue to pay cast members during this time.

UPDATE: Disneyland has now announced that it will also temporarily close its parks in Florida and Paris:

In an abundance of caution and in the best interest of our guests and employees, we are proceeding with the closure of our theme parks at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Paris Resort, beginning at the close of business on Sunday, March 15, through the end of the month.

@rormachine

Real question here, are you guys actually going to be able to stay at home and not go out bar hopping on St. Paddy's Day? I can't imagine the Irish just laying low on their biggest party day of the year.

Me: Since I already have flights and hotels for WonderCon, I can just go to Disneyland instead if that gets cancelled.

Disneyland: 😛

Welp, time to get in line on that airlines call. 😩😩😩

I suspected this was coming... I was amazed that they announced the opening date for that Avengers Campus attraction with this going on... I figured it was asking for trouble.

It survived nearly getting vaporized in 1963’s The Three Stooges in Orbit, but closes because of this. What a difference 50+ years makes.

Also, pretty cool of Disney to continue paying their workers throughout this time. Wonder if they'll keep doing that after they inevitably have to extend the closure.

2020: The year the world was put on hold.

I hope that when the dust settles on this that China seriously look at tightly regulating health and safety around their "wet" markets. SARS, Swine and Bird Flu, The Chinese Flu, H1N1 Flu and now COVID-19 have all threatened the world due to their complete disregard for animal welfare and hygiene standards. Considering the state they have currently put the world in at the moment, I don't think they'll just be able to sweep this one under the carpet. Step up China, it's not just your own people at risk, it's the entire planet.
