LIGHTYEAR: Breaking Down The Movie's Three Post-Credits Scenes (And What They Set Up For The Future)

With Lightyear now playing in theaters, we're taking a closer look at the movie's three post-credits scenes, exploring what they mean for this franchise's possible future. Needless to say, spoilers follow!

As we pointed out in our review, Lightyear is an absolute blast and a movie that definitely does this beloved Space Ranger justice. It's not exactly a spoiler to say Buzz saves the day by the time all is said and done, but that's not where the story concludes. The Pixar movie features three post-credits scenes, and you'll have to wait right until the very, very end to see them all.

The first drops right in the middle of the credits and catches up with Commander Burnside sitting in his office working as one of the planet's giant insects closes in. However, it gets zapped by the force field he was determined to build earlier in the movie; needless to say, he's extremely pleased with himself.

The second is similarly light-hearted and finds ERIC the robot finally mapping out the correct route for Buzz and his team to take in order to get to a nearby hanger and hijack a ship. An error in his programming means the robot constantly corrects himself after getting things wrong, but by the time he eventually gets it right, ERIC realises everyone has already left.

Finally, a third post-credits scene plays after the Disney and Pixar logos appear on screen and shows Zurg floating through space. Earlier in the movie, it's revealed that the villain is not a robot at all and is, in fact, a version of Buzz from the future who is determined to travel back to the past so he can make up for past mistakes and become a Space Ranger again.

His younger self defeats him and we're left to assume he died in the blast. However, when we find Zurg here, the light in his eyes comes back on, suggesting the evil Buzz is very much alive...

Lightyear 2, anyone?

Rather see a Woody film in the style of John Wayne, with Jessie as a calamity Jane type of character

@Dannywest - oh I thought this through. In a world of reboots..... reboot the puppet tv show into a "live action" animated full leangth feature. Play on the camp and western tropes then hit them dome heart like the Buzz Lightyear movie.

Should have had a post credit scene where Andy pulls out the DVD from his TV and asks his son if he would like to now watch the Woody movie next. And his son has his own Buzz Light-year and woody doll.

@AmazingFILMporg - ehh, international markets might save it, Toy Story is huge in several parts of the world.
And if don't, oh well, it's not like they didn't try.
I feel a lot of people didn't know what to make of it since trailer 1.

@AmazingFILMporg - don't understand why, it was a great Pixar movie.

@Manmarvel -

@Manmarvel - from what ive heard its far from their gold standard

@dracula - I wouldn't say that. I would say at times it felt like they were forced into a box for his origins and feeding the audience with Toy Story references were both fun and out of place campy at times. But the emotional hits, hit pretty hard and it might have been in part from not seeing them coming from the campy beets. 🤷🏻

For sure worth a worth a watch though.

If I remember Toy Story 2 right, isn’t Zurg was supposed to be Buzz’s dad?

@AscendedExtra - spoilers in the answer.

@AscendedExtra - I think that was just supposed to be an obvious Star Wars reference, not world building.

Yeah, with the money (or lack thereof) it's making, this ain't getting no sequel. For the best.

I didn’t even realize there were post credit scenes. I walked out as soon as it was over - the film was so meh. The animation was truly incredible but the script and story? Very much meh.

Also, I didn’t know Taika had it in him to be insufferable but I guess that’s what bad writing does?

BO seems underwhelming.

@GhostDog - they made a movie no-one asked for, with middling reviews, and sold it on the back of a star who's had no box office clout outside of his big movie franchise. add in top gun being an absolute phenomenon (10% drop this weekend, sheesh) that covers similar ground of a hot-shot maverick pilot, and it kinda make sense that this'll struggle to break-even (if even)
GhostDog
GhostDog - 6/19/2022, 2:12 PM
@tmp3 - exactly. And there’s no way THIS is the movie Andy saw in theaters too. Even Dominion is hurting it lol.

I could’ve understood a Disney+ release. Turning Red was more deserving of a theatrical release than this. Phenomenal film.

@tmp3 - jesus christ, Top Gun is performing that well?! well, it's Tom Cruise, probably the last actor in Hollywood who can still pull people with his name alone.

@Spidey91 - 10%! insane. can't remember the last time a film on this scale was this universally beloved.
Spidey91
Spidey91 - 6/19/2022, 3:16 PM
@tmp3 - Box office aside, it reminds me of the Mad Max Fury Road days, it has a similar kind of buzz around it: a kinda basic action movie throwback legacy sequel propped up by masterful technical aspects and strong direction.

The credits scene should have been the OG toys sitting in Andy’s room and watching the movie. I know that creates a timeline hiccup, but who cares?
