PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN Female-Led Reboot May Or May Not Include Johnny Depp's Captain Jack Sparrow

We recently learned that a new Pirates of the Caribbean movie is in the works featuring a female lead, but where does that leave the iconic Captain Jack Sparrow? Producer Jerry Bruckheimer weighs in...

Despite interest in the franchise waning over the years, Pirates of the Caribbean remains a good source of income for Disney, but it's clear that a new direction is needed. That's why the next chapter looks set to put the spotlight on a female lead (likely Redd from the Disnelyland attraction).

Collider recently caught up with longtime franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer to get an update on the status of the reboot/sequel/next instalment, and confirmed that the screenplay is still awaiting approval from Disney. "We’re working on a draft right now and hopefully we’ll get it shortly and give it to Disney and hopefully they’ll like it," he said. "We don’t know."

Bruckheimer also went on to point out that, "We’ve been working on it for a little bit."

It was actually way back in 2018 that we learned Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were in talks to pen the screenplay, but they later left the project. Then, late last year, Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin and Ted Elliott became attached, and this female-led reboot is likely the result.

So, what of Johnny Depp's iconic Captain Jack Sparrow? We recently heard that he could still be part of this movie, but it sounds like that's still up in the air.

"The one we’re developing right now, we’re not sure quite what Johnny’s role is going to be," Bruckheimer admitted. "So, we’re going to have to see." Reading between the lines, it sounds unlikely, and something tells us that if he does appear, it probably won't be much more than a cameo.

Jack feels played out at this point, so even if he doesn't make the final cut, it won't matter too much! Do you guys agree, or will it just not be Pirates of the Caribbean without Johnny Depp?

Honestly, I'd prefer an outright and proper reboot. Maybe I'm biased though.

Hmmm, a late unesasary reboot that is female centric...am getting Ghostbusters 2016 vibes.

@JustALurker -

Pirates 5 was a box-office disappointment and there was the whole fiasco with Amber Heard accusing Depp of beating women and Disney dismissing him completely as a result. Too bad for them, it turned out that not only she was lying but she was abusing him instead.

I'm gonna support Depp in that and not see the reboot (Disney doesn't deserve it since they still continue to dismiss Depp as before rather than giving him some justice and a public apology), even though I like Karen Gillan's work since her Doctor Who days.

@Amuro - considering this reboot is still in the writing stage, theres no reason they cant either include depps sparrow in the movie or just leave it open for him to appear in the series later on and not just give us Jacqueline sparrow and ms. Turner.

There has only been one good Pirates of the Caribbean flick... but I suppose I don’t object them trying again.

Yeah sure why not every movie since 3 has been dog shit and they’ve just treated jack sparrow like Eminem treats his music

- The only reason these films ever worked was Depp spinning the character around so much it almost got him fired.

- Please DISNEY...whatever you do...don’t have the red head lead assume the name SPARROW at the end of the film. If she’s Jacks daughter, just make it simply his daughter. 😂😉😂🙃😂

- Be wise to keep SPARROW alive...just Incase (when) this film underperforms you can have the option of him returning for Pirates 7.

@IronGenesis - could be the biological daughter of Davy Jones and becomes a Sparrow!

Keep him alive and in that “universe” but let these different films have their own slice of the pie.

Pass only because the well is dry on this franchise. The third film proved it and everything else after was like watching paint dry.

Good riddance. The character is completely played out and Depp clearly didn't even want to be there when making the Dead Men Tell No Tales.

@L0RDbuckethead -
Filmento's suggestion was what I hoped for with PotC6.

I expect they intended Jack's bad luck/stupidity in the fifth film as being part of the curse/voodoo doll stuff that the 4th film established. However the fifth film ended up being re-written to remove the connections to the fourth film - as such Angelica's is not really mentioned. In my view the curse/voodoo doll stuff Angelica does is the primary reason for Jack's failures and situation in the fifth film.

The end of the movie removes the curses so he's free to be himself again.

Zero interest in a reboot, especially one where they are just trying to sell it on the idea of it being female focused.

Like, for f**ks sake, just advertise a cool interesting concept, get people onboard with that and then you can later reveal the main character's actress. Do not try to use the sex of your characters as the marketing focus, especially this early on. It's offensive and insulting to the intelligence of your potential audience and turns them away from the film before you've even begun because you clearly care more about what sex your characters are than the story you want to tell.

5 ended on a good jumping off point for a sequel, I would really like them to make that 6th movie first. Then let it rest for 4-5 years before rebooting.
