DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Went Over Its Predicted Budget By Nearly $100 Million

According to a new report, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness' budget was quite a bit higher than expected, with costs ultimately just shy of $100 million more than believed. Check it out...

Forbes has done some digging and learned Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness actually cost $94.5 million more to produce than the original $200 million estimates.

After crunching the numbers, it's thought the sequel cost roughly $349 million to make. After a $54.5 million reimbursement from the UK government in the form of tax breaks, that means the budget came in at $294.5 million.

Even so, a worldwide gross of $955.8 million means it still turned a $183.4 million profit from theatrical revenue, a sum which has obviously narrowed since this news came out.

Like many titles released last year, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was hit by several pandemic-related delays. Production was halted due to COVID, but we're guessing the bigger costs came as a result of some pretty extensive reshoots.

Entire sequences were changed and those splashy cameos were filmed multiple times, a result of Marvel Studios not necessarily having a concrete plan in place for the Multiverse Saga (key creatives involved with the movie hadn't even seen WandaVision, while there were no real references to Loki).

"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a one of a kind blockbuster experience," we said in our review, "and a pure, unadulterated Sam Raimi movie that, while not quite the crazy ride through the Multiverse we expected, delivers a fun, horror-tinged trip."

There have been rumblings Deadpool 3 is going to deliver what most fans hoped this one would in terms of taking us on a crazy trip through the Multiverse. Still, there was still plenty to love about Sam Raimi's Marvel return.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is streaming on Disney+.

Have to wonder how often budgets are under reported in Hollywood

Agree with the last line. There was still plenty to love and enjoy. It's easy to get an idea in your head of what a movie or show will be. But then when it's different you'll be disappointed

@Vigor - To be fair, the name of the movie was Multiverse of Madness, and they promoted it as if it would be a romp through the multiverse. I don't think anyone expected it to only really take place in 3 realities.

For perspective, it made just shy of a Billion. If they held it another couple weeks or did an end of year re-release it would have crossed that, I think. It did pretty well, even with the inflated budget. I don't think they lost money.

If you watch Loki, Wandavision, No Way Home, Multiverse of Madness, and Quantumania as a whole and not scattered like the rest of the MCU has been. You will find it far more enjoyable and easier to follow.

@SonOfAGif - ...yet that's not how it was presented. Hell, marvel even said the shows were skippable if you just wanted to watch the movies, yet Wanda's whole motivation in MoM made no sense unless you first saw wandavision.

The problem with post endgame is that they aren't thinking of the importance of the overall story and just throwing whatever project at the board. Even just an avengers movie at the end of each phase to give clarity to what's going on isn't there. It's just a bunch of filler.

This movie should've been far better than what we actually got. Disappointing.

Why the shit are popcorn movies costing over $300 million to make nowadays?

@santoanderson - it’s getting ridiculous.

If it’s an endgame or infinity war (ultimate team up) that’s one thing.

So that's around 18% of a profit. They also lose a cut of the ticket price, not too much but that's also a thing. STOP MAKING 200-300M dollars movies!

@bobevanz - "it's not a big deal" "it was still a good movie" "still Made a profit" hahaha Holy shit.. let's be realistic here
