Tony Todd has played and voiced many villains over the years, with one of his most memorable performances coming during The Flash's second season. It was there that he took on the role of Zoom, but it has now been revealed that he came close to being Dormammu in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Interestingly, though, it wasn't as simple as him being replaced by Benedict Cumberbatch.
In a recent interview with Comic Book Resources, he revealed that he was brought in by producers to record all of the villain's lines but only as an alternative after Cumberbatch had already done so! Unfortunately, despite all that work, Marvel Studios ultimately decided to go with their first choice.
"I have to tell you about one recent disappointment. I almost did Doctor Strange. I went in to do a session to play Dormammu. Benedict had already recorded it but the producers wanted another voice just as an alternative. We did a six-hour session and then two weeks before the movie came out they let me know that they went back to the original choice. I say this just to point out to everybody that you’ve got to roll and sway with all these punches and waves that come at you. Did I cry? No. I understood. I was disappointed at the value that I lost - people going, 'Dude, are you Dormammu?' But there’ll be another Dormammu."
Season two of The Flash had already ended by the time Marvel made this decision, so it's highly unlikely that Todd's past as a DC Comics villain had anything to do with this decision. Still, it's a shame he never got to become part of the MCU, but here's hoping they keep him in mind for other roles!
