Steven Soderbergh Says He Has No Interest In Directing A Superhero Movie Because "Nobody Is F*cking"

The trend of asking established directors for their thoughts on superhero movies continues, with Steven Soderbergh (Oceans 11, Solaris, Kimi) giving arguably the most bizarre response yet!

Asking acclaimed filmmakers for their opinion on the superhero movie boom during interviews has almost become a trend at this point, and we can now add Steven Soderbergh to the list of directors who have very little interest in the genre - though the Kimi helmer's reasoning is definitely a little more... specific.

While chatting to The Daily Beast, Soderbergh (Oceans 11, Solaris) revealed that, while he doesn't believe superhero movies are "lower tier in any way," he simply can't envision himself writing or directing in that space because he finds the films so sexless.

“For me to understand the world and how to write or supervise the writing of the story and the characters — apart from the fact that I can bend time and defy gravity and shoot beams out of my fingers — there’s no [frick]ing,” Soderbergh explained. “Nobody’s [frick]ing! Like, I don’t know how to tell people how to behave in a world in which that is not a thing… the fantasy-spectacle universe, as far as I can tell, typically doesn’t involve a lot of [frick]ing, and also things like — who’s paying these people? Who do they work for? How does this job come to be?”

It's true that superhero movies, particularly Marvel Studios projects, have been criticized for being sexless in the past, but Chloe Zhao's Eternals did deliver the franchise's first love scene - even if it didn't exactly set pulses racing! Of course, there's only so much you can get away with when working with a PG-13 rating.

What do you guys make of Soderbergh's comments? Do you think superheroes should screw more in movies?

He makes some valid points. Asides from the headline, the "who’s paying these people? Who do they work for? How does this job come to be?” part is definitely something that's always bothered me in the MCU, especially post-Iron Man. Falcon and the Winter Soldier only brought up more questions about it

@NHartMusic - I've always assumed Stark Industries supplied the Avengers' paychecks. But yeah, they even bring it up as a joke in F&WS about what does Sam do for a living.

And then he just kinda ignores the question

@KWilly - didn’t he say he worked as a contractor for the Air Force? That’s why we saw him running ops for them at the beginning of the show.

Also, gotta figure he has some sort of pension from his service.

@NHartMusic - I'm sorry but everything he said is absurd.

I'm sure he never watched "The Eternals" or maybe he doesn't think that scene qualified as his notion of getting busy on screen.

@Mugens - That was like two robots having sex technically which made no [frick]ing sense.

@Matador - Well Infinity War was mainly about risking (and losing) trillions of lives to save a robot... If we start pulling at that thread, the whole thing falls apart.

@Mugens - no mention of 300 or watchmen

@Doodoopaypa - Thought it was about jewelry

@dragon316 - I actually forgot about Watchmen. Good catch.

Ehhhhh, he may find solace if he goes to the right "hub". 😆
🐃 💩 aside, I respect the fact he is specific on why it won't work for him. Now give me a Fantasic Four written by J. Michael Strazensky with Vince McGill in the directors seat.

I think he refers to the lack of romantic stories in most comic book movies (I said "most", not "all").
About "[frick]ing", you had The Suicide Squad last year, WW84 in 2020, and I think The Eternals also had one scene implying sex.

@TheHumanSpider2 - If that's what he meant, he is terrible with words.

That's not true Mr. Soderbergh. Deadpool was [frick]ing Vanessa. And then Vanessa [frick]ed Deadpool.

He has a point. Honestly, after a long day of fighting villainy, all that testosterone and just raging emotion and energy, a lot of them heroes & villains would wanna sweat it out in the sheets

Completely not creepy how grown ass people spend time thinking about characters made for kids banging.

@Reeds2Much - yeah it's definitely weird.

Enough places on the internet to watch that stuff if you really wanna see it. Heck, there are even enough superhero parodies if that's his thing.
