Are Lost and Cloverfield part of the same universe?

Are Lost and Cloverfield part of the same universe?

Let's think the unthinkable, let's do the undoable, let's prepare to grapple with the ineffable itself, and see if we may not eff it after all.

Like many of you out there I am a fan of that wonderful and illustrious show Lost, though at times a love hate relationship I always find myself coming back to it. Now unlike many of you out there I am also a fan of Cloverfield, a movie which in my opinion is a sublime piece of film. Now as we all know the wonder J.J. Abrams has been involved with both of these epics so it is plausible that they would be set in the same world. I know what you're thinking "why would a sexy and articulate man like you Ben believe such an outlandish thing?" Well I do have evidence to support my claims:

1. As already established both franchises involve one J.J. Abrams and are produced by Bad Robot.

2. They both have a 'monster', though different but both franchises exist within a world where monsters exist.

3. Both have an asian conspiracy working behind the scenes. The DHARMA initiative (DHARMA being a Buddhist name I believe for all the naysayers who say it isn't asian, Buddhism comes from asia) and Slusho and the companies behind that which if you've seen the viral videos and sites know of the creature and speculation suggests they wish to harness it.

4. The DHARMA logo is featured at the start of Cloverfield, maybe they've taken the video or have a copy as the monster links to their efforts.

5. They could exist as the people of LOST crashed before the events of Cloverfield so they wouldn’t have knowledge of the attack and that's why it's never mentioned in LOST.

So there you have it, reasonable evidence that the two are in fact one. it pains me to say it but this is the end of my first article. It has been a good ride from beginning to end but it must stop, CBM has had its daily dose of awesomeness and any more could potentially kill it. Though I must depart I will not leave you empty handed, I leave you with the tagline of an altogether different epic franchise: Live Free, and Die Hard!

Sincerely,
Benjamin Boekelaar.

well that is a good theory, we would be assuming that the Cloverfield incident happened while they are on the island. But why isnt it mentioned when the Oceanic 6 came back from the island? if its in the same universe we would have at least seen the Slusho logo somewhere or heard about something to do with Cloverfield

Boekelaar - 11/22/2009, 5:13 AM
Because the survivors return in 2005 and cloverfield occurs during 2008, you have to remember that most eps signify single day in the series so this could mean that the events of lost could lead into cloverfield

yeah and star trek is part of it to they have a big monster and jj abram did that too.and x-men and valkrie are the same because they both have nazis and are directed by bryan singer.lol wow

yeah but i didnt see the dharma logo in Trek which already had its own established universe as does X-men. This isnt just a theory on similar personell it's more like the how The Prisoner may or may not be a sequel to Danger Man. There are certain aspects that are similar and with the inclusion of the DHARMA logo in Cloverfield would support this theory. I'm willing to accept the fact that it's simply cross promotion like how the DHARMA logo is also featured in Half Life 2: Episode 2 but i'm not simply suggesting it because one person is invloved in both projects. If you're not going to say something contructive at least say something that doesn't make you look like a douche.

What about Fringe :-P

Wouldn't it be great if they had to seek out Dr. Walter Bishop to do some of his scientific experiments on the island or something!

Imran-- That would be pretty cool. Walter seems like a "LOST" character. That could totally happen.

Naaaah, its been theorized before when Clover Field came out. Abrams just likes to keep people guessing. Also, Clever field was a bit..shite!

@Boek. McGoohan (I think that was his name.) said repeatedly that while he created adn starred in both Danger Man and the original Prisoner, they are in no way connected, excaept for the fact that some of the same people played in both.

I also enjoyed the Prisoner remake, I found it interesting adn iwish AMC would have given it a few more episodes so the ending wouldn't have seemed as forced.

i do love the ending with 6 (now the new 2) sitting next to teh catonic 313 talking about how they cold make the Village work.

I'll have to rewatch the beginning of Cloverfield and see if the Darhma logo is there, but it just might be Abrahms way of giving a nod to his other series. Both might tie into Star Trek as the monster came from outer space, and was beamed to the island and/or New York.

Well we can garentee that Star Trek isnt in the same universe as lost, but for those who didnt see, i think it was Lees article, theres R2D2 floating away in space haha i thought that was cool

Boekelaar - 11/22/2009, 6:31 PM
@Hawk yeah i liked the remake aswell, but iheard the only reason McGoohan said that was because he didnt own the copyright to the character so he was legally obliged to say that they weren't the same.

@tea thanks for the support first article and all ;)

@irman is fringe any good? i was going to watch it but never did.
@ror i think the main reason people think it was 'shite' was because of how awesome the advertising campaign was and then the movie didnt live up to expectations.

Hmmm. I gotta say, it's probably just cross promotion. The monster in Cloverfield didn't sound or look anything like the smoke monster of Lost. Good theory though.

"he DHARMA logo is featured at the start of Cloverfield, maybe they've taken the video or have a copy as the monster links to their efforts."

yes the do look similar but im pretty sure(not 100%) that the one in cloverfield is the symbol for the pentagon
Boekelaar
Boekelaar - 11/23/2009, 8:07 PM
@ Cape the DHARMA logo (like the one in cloverfield) has 8 sides making it an octogon and the Pentagon logo i would assume would have 5 sides.

All your "evidence" really comes down to the fact both were created by J.J.Abrams.

When you consider that single fact the logo becomes nothing but a cookie (look how small it is) and the monster element has more connection to Godzilla rather than Lost (though i'm sure it may have been the roots of the Cloverfield idea)

Personally i see no need for the two to be connected - hope there will be a follow up to Cloverfield though.

i've actually heard this theory before. i don't know though. if you look in the top right corner at the end of cloverfield, the scene at the VERY end, when its a clip of the two main characters at coney island, you can see something falling to earth and splashing down in the water off the coast.

its unclear if the falling object is supposed to be the actual creature crashing down from space...making it an alien. or a satellite crashing that awakened the monster. if you've read any of the viral marketing sites for cloverfield, you'll see that they repeatedly mention a satellite that crashed to earth. also, through the viral sites of cloverfield, you learn that Slusho's main ingredient is highly toxic, and it grows in very deep parts of the world. josh, the main character thats getting promoted and going to japan, is going to work for the company that harvests and manufactures Slusho. a lot of people think the toxic ingredient is what mutated the monster, and the crashing satellite awakened it.

also, as a side note, in Star Trek, when kirk is at the bar in the very beginning, he orders a Slusho from the bartender. don't believe me? check it out

@corndog yeah i love all those viral sites and stuff for cloverfield, especially the video of the japanese oil rig being attacked by an unknown entity.

didnt know about the star trek thing though, i'm gonna watch it tonite.

Also,in Lost(I don't remember which episode)you can see a picture in the background that looks very similar to when the monster ate Hud!
