We are headed back to the world of Batman in the latest installment of "Baddies That Need Movie Love" and I'm highlighting a character- or two, that at first glance may have you questioning my sanity. But that's not unusual for a comic book fan right? RIGHT?!

Last summer, when Christopher Nolan and Warner Brothers finally made a third Batman film official, the speculations began as to who would be taking on the Batman. Many hoped he would be facing a more physical threat, compared to the intellectual baddies he'd faced int he previous two films and fans were rewarded with Bane as that threat. But amid the myriad foes that Batman has faced over the years, and the many baddies that were suggested for the part, there was one villain (actually two, but I've already done an article on Solomon Grundy) who stood out to me: Ventriloquist and Scarface.

As always, before I get into the why, let me talk about the who. The Ventriloquist, Arnold Wesker, first appeared in Detective Comics #583 in 1988 and is the creation of Alan Grant, John Wagner and Norm Breyfogle. Arnold is a shy, quiet man who plans his criminal acts and crimes via a dummy names Scarface, who is modeled after a Capone-era gangster- pin-striped suit, Tommy gun and all. Wesker was born into a MAfia family and after seeing his mother murdered by a rival family, Wesker developed Dissociative Identity Disorder. There is also an alternate origin story for the character where Wesker is jailed after a bar fight, in which he killed someone in a wild fit of anger. While in the Blackgate Penitentiary, he is introduced to "Woody," a dummy carved from the old gallows by his cell mate Donnegan. Woody convinces Wesker to off Donnegan and escape. In the tussle, Woody is scarred, which lead to him using the name Scarface.

The shy Wesker always lets Scarface handle the dirty work and is constantly being bossed around by the mini-mobster. Wesker is not able to pronounce the letter "B" while throwing his voice, so he replaces it with the letter "G" (Batman becomes Gatman). Wesker's "issues" were highlighted in Knightfall, where Scarface winds up missing and Wesker replaces him with Socko, a sock. Towards the end of the story, once Scarface is located, a stand off between Socko and Scarface occurs in which the two puppets shoot each other. This leaves Wesker unconscious and bleeding from his two wounded hands.

That last story is one of the reasons why I'd like to see this duo on screen. Ventriloquist and Scarface, with the right script, actor and director could be a very creepy and menacing villain for Batman to take on. The concept behind this character could easily fit in with the "Nolan-verse" and the gangster stories that have been featured in both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. The previously mentioned story shows how sadistic the character can be, despite his rather innocent looks. He could easily be placed in a role of power and hidden leadership; the mastermind behind the gangs and mafia families in Gotham.

One of the things I enjoyed most about Batman Begins was the use of villains that were not mainstream (to the general public). Using a character like the Ventriloquist/Scarface would add that same effect. Toss in the insanity factor tot he equation, taking Ledger's Joker up a notch essentially, and you could have a very intriguing villain.

To portray a character like this, you need someone who is able to pull off playing two completely different people in the same film. It's been tried before and it takes a damn fine actor to do it. I've seen several actors suggeted for this character, including the always great Steve Buscemi and comedian Colin Mochrie. I enjoy Buscemi as an actor, but I can't get behind him for this role. However, the actor I'd like to see take this part on has played a variety of roles including an over-protective priest/father, an alien visiting Earth andthe sadistic Trinity Killer. John Lithgow is among the top actors in Hollywood, taking on a huge array of characters and owning every single one of them. He can be funny, dark and creep all in the same scene. There is no doubt in my mind that Lithgow could take on a role like Arnold Wesker and pull it off flawlessly.

John Lithgow would be great. Scarface/Ventriloquist would be one of the hardest characters to justify and bring to life. It worked in TAS and the comics but I just can't see any hired thugs taking orders from the guy. Maybe just a cameo in Arkham or somethin.

BTW I really hope there are many more articles like this to come - there are some incredibly underrated villains out there (Captain Boomerang isn't one of them)

I know this is an out of left field suggestion for a villain, but one of the things that inspired me to suggest this was the Ventriloquist's part in the short film Batman: City of Scars Although not a huge part, it shows the potential of the character.

I know Dan Castellaneta (the voice of Homer Simpson) did the voice of him in The Batman, but I think he would be great as Arnold Wesker in a live-action movie. Also, Dan looks the part precisely, IMO.

@Jag- I actually considered him because he did such a good job in The Batman, but I would just love to see Lithgow take on a role like this.

@Ghostt- Honestly....I really hope he does. I want to see Batman get the holy hell beat out of him and over come the odds.

I could see him as a former mob boss whose mind just finally split into two personalities to the point he really believes the Puppet is a real person and only talks through it. This is batman after all. His villains are crazy and split personality is one of many forms the mind can take when it breaks down. But at best he would be an informant in arkham- not active anymore on the streets.

As to thug underlings, you kill a few for getting out of line and they won't care what you wear or do.. They'll fear you

@ecksman same.
I'm pretty certain, in some way, shape, or form, by the halfway mark of TDKR, we're going to see Bane break Batman. Nolan has the opportunity to redeem Bane after that OTHER movie he was in (let's not mention it), by having the classic back breaking scene from "Knightfall," or something close to it.

ecksmanfan, I couldn't agree more. I've been hoping to see him since BB was first announced. The right performer could make the ventriloquist an oscar worthy performance. Great article

I can picture the Ventriloquist as a Nolanverse Batvillain. He could be a Dissociative Personality type who does birthday parties and kills the family later that night, doesn't have to be a thug, just a seriously mentally unhinged man with an affinity for dummies.

Ventriloquist and Scarface are my one of my favourite batman vilain/s just because they are so freaking creepy and wierd. I mean, that dude is psycholgically MESSED UP (as are mose of batman's rogues gallery.
I loved the way the character was treated in BatmanTAS and both roles played by one guy, i was like no way! I felt genuinely sorry for Wesker, he was bullied and ridiculed the whole time BY HIMSELF, and he genuinely seemed to just want a quiet life. (this is in the animated series) and Scarface called wesker dummy. The puppet was the puppeteer. it was just great.
I would love to see that on film. In fact that was one of the villains i was hoping for.

I made a fancast awhile back and you, my friend, put it to shame. You have picked perfect actors with skill and talent. Each one seems ideal for that particular role. Deschannel for Harley seemed okay but her acting skills aren't on par with Posey's. Well Done Indeed.

I think a good idea, would be to have Ventriloquist as a deranged Gang Member who doesn't do anything without his Scarface Puppet.

Good call on John Lithgow, he definitely has the ability. He has form for playing characters with split personalities.

I've wanted to see these two in a movie for a long time, but I feel Larry David from Curb Your Enthusiasm would be more fit for the role.

Ventriloquist could have worked in Nolan's series, I hope he's actually in a movie soon. Also, since they're focussing on Batman's early days, I thought a fun alternative younger Ventriloquist could be played by Johnny Depp! He plays all sorts of deranged characters (like Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland (who actually had a split personallity), and Edward Scissorhands) and he's also played a gangster (in Public Enemies).
He'd be a pretty good choice for a young ventriloquist at the start of Batmans career IMO.

If you get a chance, please check out my newest fan fic, X-Men Origins Magneto

I think with John Lithgow playing him he would be taken very seriously by his henchmen plus the right amount of fear & money will make the henchmen do anything( The Joker + Pencil = Holy $#!t) Do it just like the cartoon too have the ventriloquist really hear & see the dummy talk to him when he looks at it & not move when everyones sees it.
