I've come across a really intriguing fan-made Captain America script, associated with trailers and a treatment that were pitched to Marvel some time ago.
Links to the trailers and script are down below.
The summary/treatment excerpt:
----
Steve Rogers suffers hardships few could endure, a top-secret Army experiment no soldier has survived and war missions few would accept to become "Captain America" in a last-ditch effort to bolster America's morale in World War II and turn back the tide in the fight against the savage Adolf Hitler and the evil Axis Powers.
It's "Glory" meets "Gattaca" meets "Braveheart"
The Wall Street Crash of 1929 and the decade-long Great Depression that follows have battered and broken America's faith in itself. A sudden, surprise Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor destroys most of the America's Pacific Fleet and deals another devastating blow to the nation's waning self-confidence. Steve Rogers -- a scrawny, sickly son of impoverished Irish immigrants with a frail body but a will of steel -- attempts to enlist in the Army a third time after two rejections. Through many trials and tribulations and a torturous, experimental super-soldier program, he becomes the mentally and physically enhanced "The Captain." He bolsters America's morale, helps turn the tide in the war against the Axis and only later, during an epic fight at the Battle of the Bulge, emerges in the public's consciousness as "Captain America."

The script is a great story, that runs from the emotional depths of the Great Depression to a really dramatic climax during the Battle of the Bulge. And the music and imagery of the trailers stirs the soul, really evoking great spirit and depth. It's interesting how the words "Captain America" are not mentioned once in the trailers until the very end or until the third act of the script, but like the best trailers and stories, by the time you get to the end far enough it's very clear what it's all about. This is crafted to be much more than another superhero story.
There's a wonderful scene near the beginning of the script that foreshadows Steve Roger's future -- it sent chills down my spine in the same way the "Bruce-enveloped-by-bats-in-the-cave" scenes did in Batman Begins. It also features a great twist on the famous Cap/Hitler scene and on the Red Skull's and Nick Fury's origins. And the symmetry between the first scene and the last scene of the script is intriguing and wonderfully crafted to say the least. The Peggy Carter character in this is hilarious and engaging in her own right, deserving of a spinnoff of her own.
Marvel has been doing incredible work with its movies of late, and I look forward to their Captain America movie, but based on what we've all heard about the story so far, I really wish they were heading in this direction and had seriously considered this treatment. This seems to be a deeper, more realistic and more inspirational story than what we've heard so far from Marvel's current production (there's no tap dancing Captain America in the USO in this script). The way the story is blended into real World War II history is another thing that's fascinating about it.
It's really the kind of inspirational drama and pick-me-up that I think the U.S. could really use these days.
