Director Joe Johnston has said that Captain America is “the best Olympic athlete plus 25%”. I was curious to find out what that actually meant so I found some data online and did the math. Do the numbers match what has happened in the trailers?

Discus (5lbs): 243 feet
25% greater: 303 feet 9 inches

Mile run: 3 minutes 43 seconds
25% greater: 2 minutes 47 sec

High Jump: 8 feet
25% greater: 10 feet

1500 m (4921 ft): 14 min 34 sec
25% greater: 10 min 55 sec

Underwater swimming: 351 feet
25% greater: 438 feet 8 inches

Free diving: 406 feet 10 inches
25% greater: 508 feet 6 inches

Snatch (dead lift to above head): 466.4 lbs
25% greater: 583 lbs

Bench Press: 1075 lbs
25% greater: 1343.75 lbs

Human punch (Rampage Jackson): 1800 PSI
25% greater: 2250 PSI

Long Jump: 29 feet 3 inches
25% greater: 36 feet 6 inches

in the comics he's an olympic class athlete, only where, say an olympic gymnist trains their whole life to be bthe best in agility, they sacrifice strength.

Cap doesn't have to sacrifice anyting. He's on the olympic level in all things...strength, agility, stamina, speed.

he's the perfect human specimen.

i'm not sure where he's getting this plus 25% number from.

A little detail is the Super Soldier Serum has him at a state of Adrenalins constantly. So he would not be just 25% of an Olympic athlete, but 25% of an Olympic athlete at his best. Another detail is fatigue. He has none. So he doesn't run a mile, he sprints a mile. In the comics he ran a mile in a minute. That is the equivalent of 60mph.

Caps momentum is always high. Thus when an athlete that is doing the long jump may pick up momentum from the run, they also get hit by fatigue. Cap will be able to follow his long jump with another long jump.

Another fact is the guy who does the long jump is not as fast as the sprint runner. Cap is faster then the sprint runner and can jump further then the long jumper. So now you have a man that can run at least 35 MPH hit the long jump.

Its easy to define Caps power, the guy can compete in the Olympics with out training at all and win every single event and make the other athletes look average.

I made this solely based on this statement:

"We felt it was necessary to ground the story in reality. When you have a guy throw a ship through the air…and the audience decides that’s not real, they can lose interest. There are many examples in [comic book] films where a line is crossed and audiences say, ‘I don’t believe it anymore.’ We walked a pretty fine line on that. If you take the most powerful and fastest Olympic athlete and add 25 percent, that’s what [Captain America] is."

Since the film isnt out yet this is all we have to go from

From Wikipedia (the source of all factual knowledge):
The formula enhances all of his metabolic functions and prevents the build-up of fatigue poisons in his muscles, giving him endurance far in excess of an ordinary human being. This accounts for many of his extraordinary feats, including bench pressing 1100 pounds (500 kg) and running a mile (1.6 km) in little more than a minute. Furthermore, his enhancements are the reason why he was able to survive being frozen in suspended animation for decades. Rogers cannot become intoxicated by alcohol, drugs, or impurities in the air and is immune to terrestrial diseases. He is also highly resistant to hypnosis or gases that could limit his focus.
