EDITORIAL: How A DC Cinematic Universe And JLA Film Should Be Done

Here are my ideas on how I think a Dc movie verse should be done...

I am pretty sure we are all familiar with the cinematic universe Marvel studios has built for us. I am also pretty sure we are all familiar with The Highly Anticipated Avengers movie coming to hit theaters soon. This leaves many people asking...what will DC do?

Im also sure we are familiar with the Wonder Woman film we were supposed to get, the Flash film we were also supposed to get AND the JLA film we were supposed to get as well. But how could a Dc cinematic universe work? How could it work with Nolan's Batman in its own universe, WB not being able to get a Flash movie off the ground, and them also wanting to do a jla film for themselves? Read along.

The Justice League is the most popular super team ever (probably wont be as popular after The Avengers but who cares) with very iconic characters. But as iconic as those characters are, some of them are indeed very cheesy and cannot hold a movie on their own unless they are Batman and Superman, look at Green Lantern for example. The perfect way to start off a Dc movieverse is to not go the Marvel route and build up to a JLA movie, but this time start off with it. Start the show with a BANG!

A Justice League movie could prove to movie go-ers just how badass these characters really are. The movie could show how each character can hold their own and be taken seriously without being either Batman or Superman. Something like this could have helped Green Lantern out alot more. A JLA movie can lead to each hero having their own feature film, having already proved their worthiness in a JLA film.

But how could this work out with so much going on with WB and its DC properties? Well I would simply wait about four years after Nolan's Batman trilogy is over and begin with a fresh new Batman in the JLA film. With Green Lantern, it would be best to forget as much as we can about the last one and begin with a new Green Lantern, John Stewart. This could influence more more of a diverse culture of people to go see the film with John Stewart feauring in it and can easily make people forget all about the "old" GL.

However the roster of the team would have to be shortened. JLA has too many heros on it roster for one movie alone, so the team size overall would have to be cut. Ofcourse we would keep the big stars on the team (you know who i mean) and introduce more heros in sequels and so on and so forth.

This isn't news.. but in reply to your editorial.. DC/WB tried that. Remember Miller's failed Justice League: Mortal?

No. They need to build solo movies for Batman, Superman, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman. The others can wait until after the Justice League.

Creating a Justice League with no backstory on characters would be messy. The characters wouldn't be fleshed out, and DC doesn't treat their characters as well as Marvel does. Marvel is very hands on and makes sure the characters are being treated properly in their cinematic universe. DC had a chance to prove themselves with Green Lantern but failed miserably.

They need to invest in a brilliant CGI motion capture film and break new ground with stunning effects. The characters should be done like the characters in Avatar.

A live action JLA will not happen for over a decade. and likely not even then.

WB, and most companies, need to understand that you don't have to make a dark and edgy movie in order to make a successful CBM. They are mistakingly assuming they need to alter the comic book lore to ground it into reality. I read so many interviews where they're just like "Well how do we make this realistic, this superhero is pretty corny if you think about it. We're going to change things and make it a little darker and edgier like The Dark Knight." I get so disappointed because the MCU has made it clear and obvious that the general audience will happily embrace a comic book movie that isn't shrouded in darkness.

Marvel handed over (most of) the reins to directors who they knew the character well. JonFav, Branagh, Johnston, and Whedon understand their Marvel characters and history so well that they were able to create movies that stayed true to their comic book nature, while being realistic. None of the MCU movies are dark or gritty.. in fact, most are quite humorous.

its simple, keep everyone in separate universes, then for a JL movie have a villain like Kronos or the Anti Monitor start eating universes, then a member of the JLA (preferably GL or Martian) tarvels in between universes collecting each ones greatest hero (cavil, bale, reynolds, flash, wonder woman) they join together and stop the threat, this will also act as a way of bonding all the universes together, like a "Crisis" would, you could also use this as a way of keeping the animated shows, and the old movies and serials still in cannon, and that way you dont have to bring in a new version of every character, hust use ones from past films, it would be every fans wet dream to see christian bale and henry cavill shake hands and punch out a multi dimensional threat, this also makes the league appear to be a much bigger deal than just earthly threats

or you can go the route DC is going to go which is create a DCCU and then use Darksied as the enemy, or maybe the Legion of Doom

Hello CBMers long time lurker, this is my first post.. I think a JL movie would boost DC's movie-verse immensely considering it's done right of course. As far as Batman is concerned, I don't think a reboot is necessary. Everyone knows his origin. As well as Superman. Would have been nice if there was some sort of tie-in to get the ball rolling in MOS. As for GL.. I think what doomed that picture was the fact that the current generation of viewers(not comic book readers) was more familiar with John Stewart. It was apparent when the movie was announced with Ryan Reynolds as the lead. A common response was "Wait, isn't Green Lantern black?" I think DC/WB dropped the ball on that one. They should have launched the GL animated series before the movie to get the kiddies acclimated with Hal... I honestly feel they will give it a second go round with Ryan Reynolds based on the portrayal of the character in the animated series. WW needs a movie..I don't think the other JL members would be successful in solo movies. It's going to be a tough sell in my opinion. But would love to see it come to fruition.

@TheBatman

You make a valid point, my little sibling grew up watching that show where GL was black and was highly confused as to wtf was going on...so were alot of my black peers and other peers who didnt read comics.

Dc should stick to what they know. The jl movies should center around batman and supes...

In my respectful opinion, I will start by saying that I am not a DC person but I like their Batman movies and that's it. Now about a Justice League film, they either need to go Marvel's route or just not do it. I would probably find it interesting seeing how I dunno a thing about Justice League except for a few heros, but we might be waiting a LONG ass time before we get that movie.

First Wonder Woman, Flash & Aqua-man.(maybe even other GL too to fix the 'fail' from the feature, as @The Batman posited)
Make them with the end game in mind - a Justice League movie... as MARVEL did, and then weave all the solo films into a JL extravaganza!
Careful planning , and a script of a JL film prior to the solo films to help guide the narrative, is essential.

Good editorial.

A solo Aquaman movie would fail miserably.

I think every character in the dc universe has the potential for a successful movie. No one thought the x-men would translate to the big screen. Thor again proved that a far out there character can be successful in the big screen. Heck, I think with the right writers, a character like captain atom can do great on the big screen. You ever read identity crisis? These characters have real personalities that people can identify with. Captain marvel and wonder woman and even aquaman have the same chance of success as Thor had

Good Editorial...

I completely agree with what you're saying and believe DC/WB should do the team movie first and base it off the animated series from years ago.

My roster would be:
- Superman
- Batman
- Wonder Woman
- Aquaman
- Flash
- GL John Stewart
- Martian Manhunter
