EDITORIAL: Marvel vs. DC - Why it does not matter.

As a lifelong DC fan, here are my thought out opinions on why the war between companies is pointless and should not matter to us. This is not meant to "fuel the fire" by any means. Quite the opposite in fact.

Editorial Opinion

Marvel vs. DC has become quite the hot topic this year with all the big movies coming to theaters. It's quite the hot topic on this site in particular. Yet, as I read the comments, articles, and opinions of all of these life-long comic fans, I can't help but ask myself.... WHY?

I myself am a die hard DC comics fan (check out my editorial on batman here: http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fan_fic/news/?a=62630). Always have been, always will be. I have never owned a marvel comic in my life. I think the characters are fantastic... I just have never personally been that invested in them. But does that mean I don't respect and appreciate all they have done for the comic book universe? Of course not.

I can completely understand the need to feel like you need to defend your stance on which you think is better. It is human nature. We have grown up with these characters all our lives and it is only natural to have our favorites and be set in our ways. Nothing will ever touch Superman or Batman for me, but I can appreciate a good X-Men or Spiderman story from time to time. It all comes down to realizing why we love comics in the first place and the sentimental value they hold to us.

Here is my main problem with this whole argument. We all know we were all in the theaters at midnight when The Avengers came out (and will be for The Dark Knight Rises as well). I personally saw it three times in the first weekend. I thought it was a fantastic movie and never once while watching it did I think, "Not as cool as Batman." I enjoyed it for what it was. I was blown away at what Marvel had created. In fact, I was at every midnight premiere for every Marvel movie leading up to it. Because I LOVE comic book movies. Along with the rest of the world it seems. To your average movie goer they don't even care which characters belong to which studios. They just love the experience. To an extent, I feel like that is how we should all be going into these movies and just be happy they are getting made.

The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises have and will set records this year that may not be broken for a looooong time. That is amazing for us comic fans! These studios now realize that comic book movies are no longer looked at as a gimmick or fad. They can be crafted into amazing films that can be taken seriously in the general public's eye. I personally can't wait to see what comes in the future from both studios and think that the Marvel/DC war does not matter one bit. Just enjoy the fact that our favorite characters are getting the big screen treatments in amazing ways.

This is so true! I find myself dissing on Nolan sometimes but I already have my midnight screening tix. I'm a hypocrite I know haha.

Couldn't have said it better. Even Marvel and DC brought their characters together when it came to villians destroying both universes. So if Thor and Cap can hand over their weapons to Superman in order to save what they love, I can respect both companies! And we ALL win in the end, so why fight!! :-)

Success for DC is success for Marvel. Success for Marvel is success for DC. Cooperation furthers mutual goals.

Point is, as long as these two companies exist, there always going to be friendly and passionate rivalries between the fanbases. Trying to stop it is pretty inconsequential IMO

Like Tainted87 said, a win for Marvel is a win for DC and vice versa. I am equally keen for movies from both companies. This year is a year with The Avengers, Spider-Man and Batman - all in one year or more specifically all within 3 months. And that, in my opinion, is fantastic. Next year is Iron Man, Superman and Thor. As far as I am concerned, we, the fans are winning more than either Marvel or DC.

Nicely said. And while I agree that arguing is kinda pointless the fact is... People love to argue! Like @Sagemode said, as long as these two competing companies exist, there will be ongoing rivalries among the fanbase. Like in sports, when your passionate about your home team, the away team can go f**k themselves because we want to win damnit! lol. :p

DC, Marvel, Vertigo, etc. Good comicbook movies Allow for more comicbook movies to be made. Great comicbook movies allow for more creative/non-traditional comicbook movies.

Loved this article!!! I'm just always grateful to see comic books and comic book movies further their popularity in multimedia. I grew up in love with superheroes and the adventures that they undertook in comics. Whether it be DC (for which I'm a bigger fan of), Marvel, Dark Horse, Image, etc., the fact that these stories have gone on to impact books, television, movies, radio broadcasts and so much else is a testament to the power and influence behind them. Not to mention the minds and imaginations of people today and from generations past who are keeping the hype alive. Way to go fans!

Guess no matter how good a CBM is, if your not a die hard fan of the company, it'll never be as cool as the company you love.

This is just the same as the Star Trek/Star Wars battles. Honestly, what's wrong with being able to love both things? I love DC AND marvel. I love Star Trek AND Star Wars. It should be possible to appriciate each thing for what it is, and not fight a flame war every time a new movie comes out. Just enjoy the CBM that comes out. the more we see of them, the bigger chance more will be made by either studio.

Everything about this article is a win!! I think the war nowadays is mostly the "Nolan/DC vs Marvel" war that the "Nolanites" and "Marvelites" like to bring up for no real reason just to start something.

I've always been a fam of comics period.Until recently i was strictly Marvel because Dc was too hard to follow. But since the New 52 i am Dc faithful as well.At the end of the day its a win for the fan,s i rather not see either dominate over the other by a large margin.Simply because competition brings out the best in brands.Look at the Wwe and the crap product they put out and expect us to swallow because Wcw went out of business.Point is they need each other to make one another better

The truth is DC was nothing like Marvel. They are now. I'm old enough to have lived through those changes as an adult. I out grew the old DC before high school. I resented and loathed the changes to Superman that John Byrne wrote in my college years and I loved his other work.
Now the two are very much alike. DC adapted to stay in business, they adapted the Marvel way.

What I get angry at is the know-it-alls who haven't a clue about the true history of the two, let alone the characters.

What you write of started out of insecurity and got real ugly real fast. It was their need to feel good by attempting to make "others" feel bad. It was vicious and consistant until mid-April. Funny how the olive branches come now. I never enjoyed TDK. I probably won't go see TDKR till it comes out on DVD.

Will I forgive what happened this spring? It's all ready forgiven, but not forgotten. I hope TDKR is as good as all you have declared. I feel sorry for you all if it's not. Will I be gloating? Yeah.

To the average movie goer it definitely doesn't matter. Most of them probably don't know Marvel and DC are set in separate universes. As far as comics go yeah it still seems to be a big deal for some people. People feel an obligation to always choose a side or a team. I guess I do too. I choose the good comics team, whatever company happens to publish those that's what I read. An experienced reader follows creative teams not characters and companies. To do otherwise is pretty trivial and sophomoric.

What sucks is that's what people do. They compare things with even the slightest comparisons to see which is better. It's like everyone treats things like a sport now a days it's pretty pathetic when in the end it doesn't matter. People really need to get a hold of their insecurities, that might play a role in it as well.
antonio
antonio - 7/1/2012, 4:43 PM
@Decadron exactly. Especially when it comes to the whole "Nolan Batman films vs Marvel Studios films" people almost constantly compare them when at the end of the day they are completely different except for the fact they are comic book movies.

I myself, in general, like MARVEL more than DC but both are good. My favorite is X-MEN but SUPERMAN is a very close second. So all in all I'm down for both companies. I think I have always liked MARVEL more because of it's realism where DC was always more fantastical.
FilmsFan
FilmsFan - 7/1/2012, 6:21 PM
Very well written!!

I'm not any company's fan... But cuz my favourite character is SUPERMAN, close 2nd (now cuz of Nolan's series) for me is BATMAN.
& rest ALL on 3rd!

So maybe I'm inclined towards DC... But i loved all these characters for years & years before realising they belong to separate companies; Marvel & DC!
So I never cared & hence my love for them isn't affected!

I've said this like 100 times before as well:

"AVENGERS gain is AVENGERS gain... It's NOT the Dark Knight Rises loss.
& the Dark Knight Rises gain is its gain... It's NOT AVENGERS loss"!!

ima comicbook fan in general i read DC Marvel Darkhorse Image and even various independant comic companies. Ill admit I DO have a favorite charector and his pic is my avatar pic and his name rymes with Tightding . And becuase of this i am a tad bit partial to DC but i also own a shitload of marvel comix and a few independant ones. And last year Cap was my fav CBM this year so far its Avengers, still going to see spidey and bats and cant wait to see MOS and the thor and ironman seguels. After them cap gets a sequel and im def gonna see that! I kinda got pushy when GL got a negative reveiws but thas cuase at first i thought it was really good but then i noticed alot of the thing other peeps were talking about. And im in no way a dc fanboy any more then a marvelite or darknut. I luv dc with a passion but i also love comix in general. DONT HATE DEFEND YOUR FAVS BOLDLY BUT NOT HARSHLY LONG LIVE COMIX!
