Welcome to Gotham City. It’s time you fully emerge yourself into the world that is Batman’s playground. The player will become either another vigilante, or another psychotic villain. The game starts with the player creating their character and the costume for their characters alter-ego; the options will be somewhat limited on console versions, but PC versions will have greater customization. After creating an appearance for their character, the player will name their character; players will create their character’s first name, pick a last name that in-game characters will refer to the player with, and also select from a list of names for their alter-ego. Players will next have the ability to increase their character’s skills; depending on what type of hero or villain the player wants to be, points will have to be added to certain areas (all player-made characters will be melee experts, and none will have powers). After this brief period of character creation, the player will then be thrown into the dark world of Gotham. The game will mainly follow a set story, but, depending on choices made by the player, the story can always change. The game will have a massive free-roaming area, in which the player can either stop crimes or slay innocents. This game will be very similar to the Fable games in that the player’s character changes according to their actions. If the player constantly saves people, then they’ll likely be seen as a hero. However, if a player decides to go on a killing spree, then their character will become a feared villain. Either way, the player will always have people breathing down their neck; vigilantes will constantly be attacked by hired assassins and hit men, whereas villains will always be hunted by the police. Throughout the story, the player will fight many notable Batman characters. If the player is a vigilante, then he/she will likely run across the likes of Joker, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, or Killer Croc. If the player acts as a villain, then story missions will often involve Commissioner Gordon, Nightwing, Robin, Huntress, or Batman himself. Like I said, the player’s choices make the story. There will also be times in the game that the player will team up with those on his/her respected side. Depending on how good or bad the player’s character is, the player will team up with different people: if the player is a merciful vigilante, then he/she may team up with Batman, Gordon, or Nightwing; if the player is a more violent vigilante, then he/she may team up with Huntress or Red Hood; if the player is a merciful villain, then he/she may team up with Penguin or Two-Face; and if the player is a full-blown psycho, the he/she may team up with Scarecrow, the Riddler, or even the Joker. Since Catwoman is in a very gray area of the black and white of things, the player may team up with her in almost any situation (though it’s not likely when the player is a psycho). I think the Fable idea of earning renowned points should also similarly apply to this game. The player will have to build up their status before every important story mission in the game before they can continue; this will be done with mini-missions or street missions (fighting random criminals or killing random people). Taking influence from another game, players will be able to climb walls and jump over rooftops Assassin’s Creed style. In the end, you’ll either become a close ally to Batman and his kin, or you’ll be the next patient at Arkham Asylum.
